Life is in stages. Every stage we reach, as we proceed on that ladder through time, requires more of everything from us. More courage, knowledge and understanding, responsibility, e.t.c., is required. To show that we are up to the task, we must prepare.

Too many of us are waiting for someone to come along and tell us what to do next. The story is told of a man who was employed by a Duke and Duchess. One day he was called in to speak to his employer. ‘James, how long have you been with us?’ said the Duchess. ‘About 30 years, your Grace’ he replied. ‘As I recall you were employed to look after the dog’ she said. ‘Yes, your Grace’. ‘James, that dog died 27 years ago’ said the Duchess. ‘Yes, your Grace’ said James, ‘what would you like me to do now?’

James asked a question about his next assignment when he ought to have been busy with it about 27 years ago. He did not take the initiative. The golden fleece is there waiting for those who understand their next assignment before others do. They are not caught unaware in the line of duty. If you are at the verge of leaving secondary school, start preparing for your tertiary challenge. Study and show yourself approved. Sharpen your blunt edges; in that way, you can cut your way to excellence.

Tiger Woods made his mark in his time as a golf champion. Did he achieve victory by chance or cheer luck? Roger Federer made his mark in lawn tennis. Did he do that consecutively by chance or cheer luck? Christiano Ronaldo scores as if goals are not fashionable any longer. Did he do that by chance or cheer luck? Osein Bolt, the maker and breaker of his own record did not do wonders on the track by chance. These people paid the price for high marks. The price is preparation!

The old motto of soldiers during the Revolutionary War says: Trust in God, but keep your powder dry! Place everything about you in God’s hands, but be at the ready. Get books that pertain to your chosen course of study and see what the contents look like. Readers are leaders. Leaders are ordinary people who accept or are placed under extraordinary circumstances that bring forth their latent potential, producing a character that inspires the confidence or trust of others. If you want excellence in your career, you must desire to be a leader. The confidence of others is inspired by the character you develop in the pursuit of being a spear-head. When you’ve made your choice of course with the vision of a leader, people would respect that choice because they believe you know where you are going even before you get there.

Leadership is knowing what to do next; knowing why that is important; and knowing how to bring appropriate resources to bear on the need at hand.
