I think you can decide to be offline to people and even to dissable the feature that lets people know when you read their messgs.
I enable mine from setting.

OP, it's not compulsory we use any apps we don't like now. There are many apps out there that meets our preferences.

@op some things u pointed out is not true... I use whatsapp+ there is an option to hide ur online status.. Either online or offline.. Mine doesn't drain my ba3 u just ve to mute some conversation... For automatic downloading of pics... U can disable that if u wish.. The only thing I bliv u can't disable is voice note.. But still whatsapp is still d best... My opinion thou

all the op listed are not a problem to me in whichever way. I truly enjoy whatsapp, but my only problem with it is, the picture cropping thingy. I just hate the fact that I cannot upload my display picture in full.

Hey! I think you can control ur last seen feature or control who sees ur whatsapp profile pic or status by just going to ur whatsapp then click on option(or click on the left button on ur android phone)>account > privacy. Then i think u can do d changes from there
