Do Factory Navigation Systems Work In Nigeria? by Captwahala(m): 11:25am On Dec 24, 2014
I'm interested in knowing which factory installed navigation systems work in Nigeria. I've heard that some manufacturers do not offer maps that cover Nigeria.
I would appreciate if you could state the type of car, year of manufacture and your experience/obsrvattions.

I'm a heavy Google maps user and would like to buy a car with a system that would give me a similar experience

OEM navigation installed in North American, European and others don't work in Nigeria. You can get aftermarket satnav which works. Although I've seen toyota and honda with aftermarket kits which looks exactly like OEM satnav which works in Nigeria.

Most OEM navs bought in north America don't work in Nigeria, so buying a tokunbo car with navigation is kind of a waste of money, unless u just enjoy having the big screen there for show off. And unless that screen can play back media like DVD or music from SD cards. Most of the pre 2008 tokunbo cars I see that come with navigation can't play DVD or music from SD card so thats a waste of space. I have driven a 2004 acura MDX with navigation and it is as useless as anything. The navigation screen can't do anything, not even media playback as there is a separate screen for that. There's a separate DVD slot but can only take the navigation DVD which doesn't work in Nigeria. Same thing with my friend's Infiniti Fx45, that one displays audio on the navigation screen and that's about it, nothing else works, no DVD, not even Bluetooth or SD card, no iPod. USELESS.

However there are some aftermarket head units with navigation that play music or videos from SD cards and flash drive. The problem though is most are chinese made, good looking and functional no doubt, but their maps are always terrible (can't be compared to google maps at all). I currently installed one in my car and the navigation is a no go area, the thing go lead u enter lagoon if ur not careful. What I do enjoy about it though are Bluetooth connectivity, SD card and flash drive playback, DVD and mp3 playback and my favorite feature: iPod connection. My iPod lives in my car with over 4,000 songs from different genres and it displays album info on the screen.

"I thank Lexus for my motor oooo, at least e get rear DVD player which also projects the screen to the SatNav screen on the dashboard when the parking brake is engaged and the sound can be heard and controlled via the audio speakers steering remote control and audio player, and the bluetooth telephone connectivity which works well." smiley

The MDX actually had Bluetooth and satellite radio (which doest work anyway). Just going by the topic of this thread, the navigation screen is just USELESS without the navigation DVD which doesn't work in Nigeria, so I was just stuck with a blank screen asking me to instert the DVD. I just wonder why acura didn't let the screen handle other stuff other than navigation.

Oops, that's bad, in lexus, one can transfer all the contacts from my telephone to the system, call up the contacts any time, one can check calendar, one can program a service or maintenance reminder which will actually put a call thru to the mechanic when the maintenance is due, its screen also serves as control for the dual zone climate control, and MPG counter/ distance, digital compass, Rear view camera screen, etc

Mr Mike I guess this is a follow on the discussion between lexus and Acura, if the Acura MDX can't do all what the Rx330 nav can do then I give the lexus. A better mark in this NAV category. Oya chucky123 what you have to say.

Ha ha, pls don't start that one. The MDX will do all those things a Lexus can do and even more in terms of tech. My point is just that the particular model of MDX I drove had navigation but the navigation screen is useless without the navigation DVD which is not available in Nigeria. Honda/acura normally have a separate screen for their media. In this particular MDX the secondary screen is very small and monochrome which it uses to display media and air con. There are 2 standard screens on newer models of Honda /acura, though both screens can be confusing sometimes.

Nope haba I am starting any issue, I just want him to tell me which he would prefer a Nav screen that only serves as Nav or one that can do all those things you listed. I have not said one manufacturer is better than the other.

Totally agree, i have been thinking; cant the navigation DVD be made for Nigeria. I dont know how its being done, i know its more than downloading the map of nigeria and burning into a dvd.

Anyone that has an idea of how it can be done should please say. Or is it only the OEMs can do it.

This is quite simple.
Go on Google and search for navigation maps for your specific car make and generation, e.g "navigation maps for audi a4 b6"
You'll definitely get something that will show you how to make either dvd or harddrive based images of your region's map for your vehicle. Region in this case being Nigeria.

Or just buy a cheap android tablet, connect it to your phone's hotspot for internet connectivity and call it a day
