Networking cont'd...

As i have explained before, networking seems to be a major barrier for start-ups. And you definitely need it otherwise you will become stagnant. These networking techniques are not textbook models but have been tested and to a very large extent, they are effective.

Another method i want to talk about here is what i term "hi-there method", forgive me but i don't really have a catchy name for it. Lol. And i like giving examples because i feel that is the way you can understand it quickly.

The first time i entered NPDC in Benin, normally you would move around, ask questions and get directions as to the right office you need to enter. I went to the HR building to locate someone and while i was asking my way around, i was observant of the secretaries that will smile at me and be real friendly. After i was done, i went ahead to meet the woman i saw earlier to strike a conversation....she was welcoming, when i was also done with her, i searched for the young man (also a secretary) who went out of his way, got up from his seat and escorted me to the main office i was searching for. We chatted on the way, normally some other secretary would just point the way for you and that is it.

Before i left the company, i got the phone numbers of the woman and the young man. And i made them my friends.

What i am trying to emphasize here is that getting contracts from big companies, you should kill the idea that one of the managers or bosses will help you get it "if only i can get his or her contact". No oga in a big company will help you nail that contract. SIMPLE!

They have their own privately registered companies they can use to get the contract, plus the have direct family members on their neck waiting to be helped. So forget it.

If you need a real help, network with people whom you think don't matter. The secretaries.

These set of people, they cant authorize the contract to be awarded to you BUT they can give you priceless information. And in this business, information is everything. So when next you walk into a company or organization, look out for the most "friendly" secretary, befriend him/her, collect their phone number, send them recharge cards and you will be the first to know if anything is about to go down. Don't walk in with your face all squeezed up like a commando, look good, smile and you will make new friends in the company before you walk out.

Cheers.

Getting a sub-contract with SPDC.

Hint: for those of you in PH or willing to come to ph to try as well follow this steps.

1. Go to Shell Vendors Service Centre with your complimentary cards, approach any of those guys that came to submit service entries, almost 90% of them are companies reps/admins, onpenly discuss with any of them your intentions, introduce your company with them and exchange your cards with him/her, from their you guys can get along, but make sure your company have a SUB CONTRACTORS POLICY dully signed by director, because they must surely want to see the policy before doing any business with you

now lets believe by Gods grace you were able to connect with them and do small sub contracts with them, during the process of contracts documentations insist on your company logos and contact info included on the contract profile to be submitted to principal company, you must have stated this in your sub contracting policy.

even if the job your doing for them worth less than 100k the main aim here is not the money but your company name to be registered in the spdc contractors data base, every contractors/sub contractors details are registered in the data base.

try to do the contracting given to you very well, dont cut cost, make sure you adhere to QA/QC policy that will make your company to be contacted directly in any other project. you will be given express registration as a full contractor/supplier of spdc.

many company has used this format and it works very well, especially those community base company that always having problem registering or obtaining letter of recommendation from comuunity chiefs due to they are none community/state companies.

You just hit at the nail here. I had intended asking you this question but, you have just explained.
I am in Port Harcourt and definitely will follow this advice.
I don't seem to find the subcontractor's policy in the documents u sent me. Is it a modification of that to suit a subcontractor policy?
I'll contact you via e-mail.
Thanks.

well that is life for u, atimes such happens, as for ny house work is on going on the site now, after the evacuation we start rebuilding it, before probably before june it will be completed.

that my mum had an operation is nothing new, I only reply the guy that ask how was my day, I did not do that for public sympathy, what matters to me is her health and she ok now, for the house it will only cost money not life.

as for my mail the person is only wasting his time, don't forget I am IT professional, so I can take care of that, I only made it public because of number of pms and request I have in there, so people can bear with me.

bro dont use people predicaments for public fun so that such will not come your way.

If you need direct information on available contracts, offers, multinational companies information, strategies, etc, fill the form and subscribe. You will get first hand information weekly. You need this if you need to grow.

It seems nobody is sharing any tips on networking. You need to know that this is equally important like any other aspect of starting out as a contractor. @ Scantee promised to share some tips but people keep asking for stuff from him, i believe we should give him some time to share what he wants to share on networking. We are all learning. When you have learned all you need to learn, then you can start requesting for stuff (cutlass to go into the jungle).

My next networking tip is a well known strategy, but not many people take advantage of it. It's what i call "Social Hook Strategy". I will share this on my next post.
