I started playing the keyboard very recently. I can boldly say I'm doing pretty fine. But i need some assistance.

I've been playing basically major chords. It's kinda too chordy and boring when all a keyboardist does is to rise and fall with a lead vocalist in a song. It's really frustrating.

I obviously know I'm lacking some requisite skills.

My problem: Between the chords, I barely do anything else. The period of silence is too much. I believe some little things are missing. How can I keep playing steadily without keeping that long silence?

Besides, how useful are 7th chords?

What do you mean by something missing within a chord?

The only thing that could be missing within a chord in most cases is a chord, ironic? but in some cases it's a tone as in, a key.

You play a dominant7 buy adding a flattened 7th to your major triad, you play a major7 by adding a 7th to your major triad and you play a minor7 by adding a 7th to your minor triad.

An example in the key of C:

C E G which is the major triad + Bb, the flattened 7th = C dominant 7.

C E G + B, the seven = C Major 7.

C Eb G + Bb = C minor 7.
