It's no secret that medical practice is becoming less and less worthwhile in Nigeria and the health sector is currently on a nosedive. Practitioners are leaving the shores of the country in droves, and sooner or later, I intend to, too (judge me later). Now I have heard of cases where doctors travel abroad to seek jobs in their field but end up as cab drivers or hospital orderlies. so I decided to get all the information I need so as not to run into any frustration, what with my limited funds and all.
So the question is: which country would be the wisest choice for a Nigerian-trained doctor, taking into consideration:
- ease and cost of obtaining a work visa
- ease and cost of getting a practicing license, exams and all
- ease of GETTING a job
- ease of settling into the country and job.
- financial fulfillment and job security.(Cuz Nigeria can't be THE worst, right?)
- etc

Note that it doesn't even have to be a Western country; I heard some African countries have excellent healthcare systems.

any valid, candid, relevant opinion will be highly appreciated.

Thanks bro. Unfortunately, it seems all the foreign-based doctors on NL aren't. Maybe because this isn't abt JOHESU vs. NMA war.

Stay in your OWN country and HELP people there.

Did you become a doctor to make money and live comfortable lifestyle or to HELP people?

You are very irritating to say the least, if he wants to leave let him leave. Everyone is entitled to a better life not just you.

Do you pay his bills or provide for his family?
Nigerians are very ungrateful people and don't appreciate the work that healthcare professionals put in above and beyond duty day in day out. So i bet he is simply fed up.

Everyone keeps going on about medicine being a humane and caring profession and yes that is very TRUE! that is why doctors don't down tools at 5pm because their day shift has finished but carry on to ensure someone is stable enough and can be handed over before they go home etc but there is a very big difference Medicine is NOT a charity! So please note the difference.

There may be charitable hospitals etc but not everyone works in a charity organisation. Medicine is not a priesthood of some sort, when doctors take the hippocratic oath they dont promise to work for free. They promise to do their best and it means sometimes working for free not ALWAYS working for free.
When was the last time you donated to a medical charity by the way? But you expect to get free treatment when you turn up because doctors are supposed to be 'charitable individuals'

Doctors need to get paid so they can care for their families and pay their bills.

Do you give doctors a discount because they are doctors or do they get free cars, live rent free and get free food in the market? do their children get free education?

NO! instead they get abuse from the public who forget that healthcare is expensive and their doctors are doing their best.

I don't even work in Nigeria but i feel the pain of Nigerian doctors!

I am well aware of the situation you have listed below.

Fleeing your country is part of the problem; not the solution. If everyone flees, then who stays hm?

Part of the brain drain in Nigerian and a lot of African countries (and hence the broken health care system mind you), is people fleeing the country.

Stay there and strive for a better place for your countrymen and future generations.

It only takes one man.....Martin Luther King could have said fvck it for rights, I'm fleeing this damn place. Where would black Africans in America (and all of western Europe) be?

Stay there! At least don't come to US, they've got enough issues with massive influx of doctors from other countries as it is. You will be mopping floors for years before you even consider the daylight of practicing your profession.

Well when the situation gets critical the government and nation will sit up and do something about it

As for now they're relying on the goodwill of doctors amongst other things but 'When things fall apart' you know what follows

Just finished service...ie going on 3 years in the profession. Have always dreamed of being an OB/GYN, but for the most part, I'm still a blank slate.
I hear say that PLAB hard die! grin how true is that?

Ok so you're still young and versatile. It's important to make up your mind what you want to do early.

I'm a gastroenterologist. I did the PLAB a very long time ago and it was hard then so I expect it to be hard now after all it's an exam smiley But you should be used to hard exams as a doctor.

What is your specialty?

New Zealand is often looking for immigrants who are looking to settle there and are skilled professionals.
And you might as well stay here.
Nigeria could use your medical prowess
