Story Of My Life...how Ignorance Destroyed My Interview!!! by sugarbuns(f): 9:02am On Jan 04, 2015
So I decide to write about one of the most embarrassing days of my life. It will be in series with questions I faced. It was my first time in Nairobi, Kenya, couldn't believe my luck an opportunity to be interviewed by top brand companies for a fellowship programme. Ok, let me start at the beginning. I applied for a fellowship that I wasn't even qualified for, no MBA, zero professional courses. In fact I had made no effort to improve myself in the 2 years after my NYSC. I concentrated solely on getting a job and earning money (typical Naija mentality).
Luckily I got a mail to attend with an all expense paid trip ( return flight, hotel and a lovely, lovely buffet) to Nairobi. It was my first time there, I was excited.
I bought my clothes, got my yellow card and renewed my passport. I googled assessment centre activities. I prepared for everything; maybe some interview questions here and there BUT with how it turned out I guess it wasn't good enough.
My interviewers were 2 Germans and a nice Kenyan lady, I was a bit nervous but I did a good job of faking it (fake it till you make it lol).
The first question was pretty easy then one of the deal breakers came:
Interviewer: Where do you see yourself in 5 years.
Me: In sales & marketing. I would like to cover product management and branding.
Interviewer (with a smile on his face): Hmmm, but sales and marketing are 2 different things.

Embarassing Interview Day 1
So I decide to write about one of the most embarrassing days of my life.

Me thinking: Na wah oh I know even know sef. This one no be my country when all these pharmaceutical and insurance pepo they do all together. Ol' boy I don Bleep up, all these Naija jobs and their adverts when dey jam am (sales and marketing) don kee me).
I felt like dying, I think I almost crapped my pants because I had made a really cute fool of myself. I somehow in all my enlightened years did not know that their was a huge difference all though they are easily confused. Bush geh like me smiley

So first lesson:
Sales and Marketing are two different things oh if I had tried using google.com I found that out.

So let's define it:

Marketing:
It should consist of strategies that you can measure your reach and work to persuade your prospects that you are the company for them. It's the message that prepares the prospect for the sale. It could consist of advertising, public relations, social media, relationship marketing, brand marketing, viral marketing, and direct mail.
Sales:
The sales process consists of interpersonal interaction. It is often done by a one-on-one meeting, cold calls, and networking. It's anything that engages you with the prospect or customer on a personal level rather than at a distance. Most the time the prospect or potential customer has been driven to you via marketing efforts.

Similarity: They are both aimed at increasing revenue.
Without marketing you would not have prospects or leads to follow up with, but yet without a good sales technique and strategy your closing rate may depress you. Marketing and sales should work simultaneously, but in most companies they are departments that don't even speak to each other.

I read the story here I didn't visit the blog. However hafbi not seen the entire write up here I most likely would have gone to the blog. I would have been disappointed.
The start up and finale don't match. I expected some exposure on the foreign pattern if interviews as against our Nigerian pattern not just the sales and matketing . secondly you are a good writer keep it up.

The assessment was quite different I intend to write about it as each question asked was new. Although I know better now, I'm well aware that not everybody knows the difference between S&M. Thanks for the compliment though.
