The strike by the health workers union, JOHESU has claimed the nation’s only neuropathologist, Professor EU Akang. He died of a heart condition on December 30, 2014 on his way to a private hospital to seek medical assistance.

The 52-year old Professor Akang, who had become ill and was experiencing some symptoms, put a call on the day to a cardiologist at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, seeking assistance.

Already assured that he could come to the hospital’s accident and emergency department, the professor was driven down to be met at the hospital’s emergency department by a senior registrar in cardiologist, who claimed not much could be done for him, but subsequently referred him to a private hospital.

The professor, who already had challenges breathing and really sick, however, was not fortunate to get to the private hospital because he died on the way.

Chief Medical Director, UCH, Professor Temitope Alonge, in a reaction to his death that spread through the hospital and his professional colleagues, described the incident as unfortunate.

The CMD, while stating that all the various machinery at the emergency department should have been deployed maximally to attend to him, declared “I want to believe that the strike action and the fact that the facilities available at the emergency department not been fully utilised contributed to his death.”

what a shame this could happen. How on earth will a reasonable government allow closure of her health facilities for 24hrs not to talk of almost 2 months... God knows thousands that would have been a victim of this callous and politicking of every facet of our system in the country...

I strongly advised JOHESU to explore other means of resolving issues with government. people are dying daily due to this strike and as it stands now, government is clearly not interested in them.

Unnecessary power tussle and avoidable deaths.. The made people are the ones that make the news though.. The prospective scientists, researchers, engineers, leaders that have died in one way or the other due to the strike never do. The bright side though is the odds are really against GEJ.. JOHESU has been on strike for a while, the judiciary just started theirs, MEND backs buhari, Ndi-igbo is split and yet to make a decision, massive turn out during the APC campaign in the south south.. People will definitely be showing their grievances february 14 and hopefully a change of government might just be what we need to revive the health sector.

RIP to the prof.

I really don't want to sound insensitive or smth. But when the medical doctors were on strike and people were dying, they did make insensitive statements. Like 'doctors are the only important members of the health team' 'if johesu goes on strike, they won't be missed because doctors are on ground' 'they know a little of lab tech, nursing, pharmacy' bla bla bla.

Foolish set of Homo sapiens, why couldn't you save what was left of our only neuropathologist? I thought you were 'demigods' and have mystical powers to save lives? Why blame his death on JOHESU now? The joke is on you and the GEJ led FG that has no value for human lives.

The moment we begin to understand that healthcare is collaborative like it is in saner climes, is the moment we'll begin to treat each health profession on its own. Prof's death(tho sad) is a reminder to that effect. Don't quote me pls!

JOHESU happy now?

who knows how many children have died?
how many mothers in labour have passed away?

Are these deaths tickling the fancy of somebody?

Buhari 2015

lalasticlala obinoscopy mukina2

Yadoctora:
*Is the presidency too busy with the coming elections to care that JOHESU are on strike?

*Are members of JOHESU satisfied with doing nothing that they fail to speak out? I have not heard of any press release, staged protest, television broadcast or any action whatsoever carries out in pressing their demands.

*How many Nigerians are aware that this strike is ongoing?

*How many of those who know are aware of what JOHESU's demands are?

*Private hospitals are fattening their account out of this mess.

*Are the lives of the average Nigerian not worthy of being taken seriously?

I ask as a well-meaning Nigerian.
