Though people laud the massive increase in food production, it is a bad policy, It is a policy built on quicksand. It has a very poor foundation no matter how mighty the edifice is.

Whats sustains this rice production is the high protection walls which compels Nigerians to pay much higher for rice than they normally will. Its the same nonsense that the country has in the cement industry that has made someone Africa's richest man by overcharging consumers for his cement.

Truth be told, the country has no comparative advantage in terms of rice production hence the country importing it. We have no need to import yams as the country has comparative advantage in it.

I am sure there is massive smuggling of the commodity into Nigeria.

Self sufficiency will not solve hunger problems. The primary cause of hunger is not a lack of food. It is actually a lack of money.

India which is self sufficient in food production has serious malnourishment problems. Many simply can not afford food.

China has been able to overcome its hunger pains not through self sufficiency but through prosperity.

Nigerians ate best during the oil boom days when money flowed.

Nigerian should take a cue from Ivory Coast. The country focuses resources on agric goods it has comparative advantage and imports the rest.

The country has benefited immensely from this policy has their major export, cocoa brought about prosperity and also a massive influx of foreigners to work in the plantations.

Also imported food is cheap. The people eat comparably well. It is a win win situation

What ever agric policy the country wants to have in place must be based on strong economic foundations and not on idealistic goals.

I hope you don't mind telling us which staple food Ivorian eat that are imported into their country.
Thanks.

Has the massive immigration to work the plantations not being a source of major problems

This should answer your question About the foodstuffs Ivory Coast imports: https://archive.org/stream/agriculturalecon69skin/agriculturalecon69skin_djvu.txt

Also, if the agric sector here was booming, there would be a lot of immigration also. People naturally gravitate to where they believe their lives can improve.

Yes, the massive immigration adversely affected them because they had a small population in the first place and also the country first prime minister encouraged immigration.

I pray that crud oil should drop to meaningless level so that agriculture will be given a boost esp by our state and local govt. Dr Akinwumi and Dr. Gej una transformatiön agenda no get part two.
APC cyber dogs must not eat from the rice but if they should try it and did not vote for gej then and then musiwa and cramjones will be more sanner than all of them and their mouth wlil bend to the left.

Hahaha, this is the result of having an intelligent and learned person as president.

Not the type that promises to increase and reduce world oil price by mouth.. without certificate...

What an insult on literate Nigerians to impose an iliiterate on us as leader.

God bless GOODLUCK JONATHAN and the Honourable Minister of Agriculture. I pray one day I serve as minister of Agriculture in Nigeria.

GEJ till 2019

I very much doubt he was booking space.
He more probably found it necessary to delete an erroneous comment he made. It is good when one can accept he made a wrong move and goes ahead to correct himself.
