2014 ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY:my
tribute to the fallen and living heroes. It
was late 1992.Dad rushed home,went
straight to his room, packed a few of his
stuffs and came back to the parlour where
mum and I were sitting. Then he gave mum that look which made her wonder aloud:
''wots wrong?''. He was silent for a few
seconds.Alas! he let the bomb out ''mo n lo
Liberia''..meaning,am going to Liberia.
You see, such is the life of a soldier.Always
prepared to be called to battle,anytime..to keep the peace thousands of miles away
from home.To keep the peace in a war
they never started. To lay down their lives
for the
peace of their nation and if need be,
another nation. Mum rolled on the floor, crying, holding him
back,,never wanting to let go.It was
understandable for Liberia @ dat time was
a burning hell.Few officers and soldiers
lived to tell the story. He knelt, cuddled and
assured her all will be fine.Hmnn..I was too young to understnd so I just watched. Then
came the bugle sound.He hurriedly
grabbed
his rifle, bags and my crying mum and I
saw him off to the parade ground where
over 800 others were waiting, singing, danc ing and full of 'morale'.It was like a party
was going on.I found it difficult to
reconcile my mum's pain with their joyous
mood: SOLDIERS!! We were not to see dad
until 2yrs
later.Within those years,in the barracks, news came of fallen
soldiers.Sometimes,I stood and watched as
mother, children and loved ones cried,
when they had heard that their
breadwinner had passed on in battle. He
didn't die because he was sick,or because he was in a wreck. He died doing what he
felt was right. My dad kept his promise:He
came home alive..not many did, and today
I
still remain entirely grateful to God. You
see, a soldier is a professional. He does not care that he is tired. That his hardened
body is sleep deprived. He is unbroken and
vigilant in his task.Somewhere this warrior
is the final tripwire. He has trained all his
life in brutal conditions day and night. This
barren and desolate world is his home. He lives and survives by an ancient Creed.
Somewhere this weapon of war will not
ask nor give quarter. He thrives on the
mission and completing his objective.He
allows the taste of fear to motivate his
actions. He is…the final option. When politicians die,,they lie in state, when
soldiers die,no one noticed.In my lifetime,I
will not rest until I see dem accorded d
respect they truely deserve.
This is also specially dedicated to the 192
battalion soldiers who've paid d supreme sacrifice.
The candle will burn out long before your
legend ever will !!
