The most important piece of any computer is the hard drive, so it is incredibly important to make sure that this part remains protected throughout the lifespan of the computer. It’s important that computer owners realize that overheating is more than just a minor inconvenience. Studies show that a hot hard drive is a precursor to hard drive failure. Hard drive failure causes people to lose all of their data, especially if no backups were conducted.

Hard drive failure is very common with all computers, with no real way to prevent it though. But there are different reasons why a hard drive can fail, the most commonly known is overheating. Viruses and crashes are very common as well, along with accidental deletion and theft.

The hard drives we use now days, have speeds between 7,200 and 10,000 RPM, meaning that they can get quite hot when they start working, compare to the older style and mechanics of hard drives, the RPM speed was low, meaning that the drives wouldn’t overheat. Computers of this day come with cooling fan to keep your system in good shape it terms of heat, with most hard drives including temperature sensors as well, so you can keep track of just how hot your hard drive becomes.

The faster hard drives come with speeds of 10,000 RPM, which can
make the temperature soar above 70 degrees F, really over heating
things up inside the drive. The mechanics on the inside are built to
withstand the heat, although if things become too hot, you’ll
encounter problems. Bear it in mind that if a drive becomes too hot
and ends up losing the data, it is impossible to retrieve the
information that has been loosed – no matter how good your
recovery specialists is.
Platters suffer from the drive overheating a lot, because they are
magnetic media. In case you don’t know what platters are or their
function, they carry the data throughout your hard drive. They are
constructed from optical glass or ceramic and they are coated with a
layer of magnetic material. Once the hard drive begins to heat up, the
platters starts to expand, and their size begins to change. When this
happens, the magnetic surface on the platters will be destroyed, and
they outcome will be loss of data. When the physical area of the
platters is damaged, unreadable sectors will be the result.

Read and write heads (controller chip and the head actuator) are
other areas of the hard drive that can be damaged due to hard drive
overheating. Hard drives as we know are sophisticated pieces of
hardware, which means that they can’t withstand overheating. The
read and write heads are a common example, they can render the
drive useless easily if they are damaged.
It is better for you to prevent your hard drive from overheating. To
do this, you should always make sure that it is well ventilated and
cooled properly. In the case were your fans and coolers are not
working, you can always get additional ones at a very affordable
price for replacement, which will improve both ventilation and the
flow of air in your computer.

Better still; get yourself software that monitors the temperature of
your hard drive. Be it software, or additional fans, always ensure
that your hard drives are kept cool at all time. Because by keeping
your hard drive cool, you’ll reduce the amount of crashes. Also, it
will increase the stability of your hard drive, and of course, your
computer will perform much better than ever before.
