At least, one-third of ALL Cancer cases are preventable. Prevention offers the most cost-effective long-term strategy for the control of cancer.

If you are concerned about cancer prevention, take comfort in the fact that small changes in your daily life can make a big difference.

1. Avoid Tobacco Use
Tobacco use is the single GREATEST avoidable risk factor for cancer mortality worldwide. Tobacco smoking causes many types of cancer, including cancers of the lung, oesophagus, larynx(voice box), mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach and cervix. Avoid tobacco!

2. Eat a healthy diet
Diets high in fruits and vegetables may have a protective effect against many cancers. Conversely, excess consumption of red and preserved meat may be associated with an increased risk of "Colorectal cancer". Base your diet on fruits, vegetables and other foods from plant sources - such as whole grains and beans. High-fat diets tend to be higher in calories and may increase risk of overweight or obesity - which can, in turn, increase cancer risk.

3. Exercise and stay Healthy
Maintaining a healthy weight may lower the risk of various types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, prostrate, lung, colon and kidney. Regular exercise activity counts. Try a fitness class, rediscover a favourite sport or take a daily brisk walks.

4. Protect yourself from the Sun
Skin cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer - and one of the most avoidable. Stay away/avoid the time the sun's rays are strongest, wear tightly woven, loose-fitting clothing, stay under shade as much as possible, avoid tanning beds and sunlamps.

5. Treat Infections
Getting immunized against Hepatitis B can decrease your risk of developing liver cancer. Viral hepatitis B and C cause "cancer of the liver"; human papilloma virus infection causes "cervical cancer"; the bacterium Helicobacter pylori increases the risk of "stomach cancer". Preventive measures include vaccinathon and prevention of infection and infestation.

6. Avoid Environmental pollution
Researches have revealed that environmental pollution of Air, Water and Soil with carcinogenic chemicals accounts for 1--4% of all cancers. Indoor air pollution from coal fires DOUBLES the risk of lung cancer, particularly among non-smokers.

7. Avoid Risky behaviours
The more sexual partners, the more likely he/she will contract a Sexually Transmitted Infection(STI)- such as HIV or Human Papilloma Virus(HPV). Don't share needles.

8. Avoid Radiation
Knowledge on radiation risk has been mainly acquired from epidemiological studies of Japanese Atomic Bomb survivors(August 6th and 9th 1945, when US bombs obliterated the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively) as well as from studies of medical and occupational radiation exposure cohorts. Ionizing radiation can induce leukaemi. Ultraviolet radiation is carcinogenic to humans, causing all major types of skin cancer. (Prevention: Avoiding excessive exposure, use of sunscreen and protective clothing).

9. Take Early Detection Seriously
Take cancer prevention into your own hands, starting today. Go for a check-up, early detection will attract early treatment which is most likely to be successful. The Rewards Will Last A Lifetime.
