NASA has not declared that the sun is dying. The mysterious black spots have spawned various theories. One is that they just might be black holes. Even if our Sun starts to petter out, it would still take about a million years to completely flame out and go Super Nova. More than enough time for us jet out to another star system. |

plaetton: You are quite right. But just to be a bit pendatic, the sun is not massive enough to go supernova at its end of life. It would expand into a red giant that will consume the earth before cooling and contracting to a white dwarf. 2 Likes |

dorox: We can safely say that we can leave it to our descendants far down the line to worry about that. Meanwhile, we have nuclear self-annihilation, global warming, resource non-sustainability and any number of huge meteor strikes... etc to worry about. I doubt that the Sun's death aeons down the line, will meet any live humans on earth. 1 Like |

Abuamam: Quite true, this planet will become a big desolate landscape , much like Mars, in a thousand years or less. Consider for example that the Abrahamic religions are praying everyday for the arrival of this contemplated eventuality. So the sun will surely outlive all life on this plantet. |
