The BBC in her usual habit of running down the Nigerian government asked the Minister of Avaition Osita Chidoka why Nigeria doesn't have a national airline. The minister answered that the bureaucracy associated with running govt business has led the govt to consider a private sector run national airline. He then informed Liz Diseko that even the US and the UK do not have national carriers. Ms Diseko had to swallow her pride and ended the interview.

British Airways(BA) is the flag carrierairline of the United Kingdomand its largest airline based on fleet size, international flights and international destinations. When measured by passengers carried it is second-largest in Britain, behind easyJet. The airline is based in Watersidenear its main hubat London Heathrow Airport. A British Airways Board was established by the United Kingdom government in 1972 to manage the two nationalised airline corporations, British Overseas Airways Corporationand British European Airways, and two smaller, regional airlines, Cambrian Airways, from Cardiff, and Northeast Airlines, from Newcastle upon Tyne. On 31 March 1974, all four companies were merged to form British Airways. After almost 13 years as a state company, British Airways was privatised in February 1987 as part of a wider privatisation plan by the Conservative government. The carrier soon expanded with the acquisition of British Caledonianin 1987, followed by Dan-Airin 1992 and British Midland Internationalin 2012.

Why do we think everything must be 'sourced' before it can be believed. I watched BBC Focus on Africa presented by Ms Diseko by 6pm today and I saw the interview.
About British Airways, it used to be owned by the govt but was bought over by AIG group after privitization which is similar to what the Nigerian govt has and is doing with her public corporations. Someone up there would want us believe that Mr Osita Chidoka is a pure olodo when he doesn't know that once privitized, public corporations shift to the hands and management of the private sector with the vt playing only a regulatory rule.
SMH for some folks.

Don't mind them. British Airways transited from state ownership to private ownership but it is still a going concern. Let pdp tell us where the ruins of Nigeria Airways lie, and why Richard Branson (Virgin Nigeria private sector driven national carrier/joint venture) fled the country in disbelief at the levels of corruption in the industry.

Private or public we need a national airline. Not because America and Britain doesn't have, then Nigeria will not have.
The number of airplanes used by all the airlines in Nigeria is not up to what British Airways alone has in its fleet.

That the US and UK do not have airline is not news o a story so let us leave that to one side
Who is Liz Diseko?
What exactly is the story here or what is this thread about? To inform us that the US and UK don't have airlines?
To tell us about Liz Diseko? I Cannot find any relevance
Or about the BBC "running down the Nigerian government"

WHEN AND WHERE DID THIS ENCOUNTER HAPPEN

From top to bottom this is a non issue. I am honestly troubled about the future of Nigeria when I consider the brainless twaddle that is being passed off as "issues" by our s called "leaders of tomorrow"
This is worse than brainless

What is the point of this thread

It is a bit strange that when I Google

Osita Chidoka Liz Diseko

it brings me directly to this thread

What topic? Is there a topic here? That British government does not own BA> That is 27 years old news and not really worthy of a thread. If someone asks why Nigeria does not have a national airline they are NOT putting Nigeria down . It is a reasonable question
Most developing economies the size of Nigeria have one so I do not see how asking the question is putting Nigeria down. The OP claimed the minister INFORMED his interviewer how does he know they did not have that information.

This is like when a 70 year old widow ask a 40 year old spinster why she is not married and she replies to the 70 year old grandmother you are not married too. Was she trying to put her down? Are their circumstances the same?

The Fact is we already have a private airline that operates internationally and our government needs to wake up to the politics of international aviation and support it. Whether the airline is owned by government is not the issue it should be in NIGERIAN ownership exploiting the MASSIVE opportunities that are currently being exploited by foreigners
The biggest international airline in Nigeria should be owned by Nigerian currently that is NOT the case

1. Chidoka has not been @ the helm of affairs as regards to our aviation for upto 1yr( am not saying he shouldn't do smthing oooh, but making such policy and presenting to national assembly is not a day job)

2. Running a private airline is not a childs play( purchasing is diff from running it effectively otherwise the so called 1st world countries should be able to manage and run them talk more of a 4th world country.

3. That was an interview, chidoka was asked a question and he answered it,if wat he answered were not good, don't u think the interviewer will bombard him with more questions just to disgrace his ignorance? But NO she ddnt because the answer to her question was appropriate.

4. This is my own opinion, it differs from urs, so be free to tongue lash me.

.
The main issue is not whether Government owns the airline but that it is in Nigeria hands and REGISTERED as a Nigerian airline.
Only Nigerian airline has the privilege of operating flights out of Nigeria to to any other destination that is the law of the sky.
Other airlines eg Emirates can only fly to UAE out of Nigeria
So if we look at our most lucrative routes e,g London,Dubai Addis we can see the huge advantage FOREIGN airlines have in operating a route with NO COMPETITION on DIRECT FLIGHTS
An airline can only originate flights from it Nation of registration( with few exceptions)
That is why all European flights going to US have to go back home they cannot fly into New York from Lagos.
This has huge competitive implications but also advantages because they will have to pay tax to the HOME Nation

That is why if you are flying Air France they must stop in Paris or some of their colonies wher they have some exceptional arrangements
So the issue of NATIONAL is not about Government owneship it is more than that

The most competitive airline that can operate internationally in Nigeria will be National.
BA cannot fly Direct to New York or Germany from Nigeria That is what NATIONAL really means

Guy I don't know what your problem with my thread is. While we appreciate the fact that we need a national carrier, we must also understand and appreciation where Nigeria has been on this airline issue. The minister did humbly admit that bureaucracy kills govt enterprise in Nigeria so a resort to private sector ran carrier is being sought. They are working on something but are being careful so it doesn't fail like previous ones did.
