She could have said anything that can be spelt with 14 matchstick. the explanation said that she removed one of the sticks, so that she removed one stick didn't mean that she did not rearrange what was written by the guy. So, thinking outside the box, try writing anything with 14 sticks and you will be right.

firstly, the way the question emphazised on the number of match sticks ( it can be counted in the picture) reveals that "15" could mean something and afterall "hotel" can be written with as many match sticks as possible. It could mean time 3.00pm(preferably) or date. Now, time of what? Time of meeting (preferably) or time he came home( not important).
secondly, when u remove a matchstick THEN IT STOPS BEING "HOTEL" and it "14"(2.00pm) marchsticks.

so from the logic above, we can deduce that the conversation goes like this.
guy; I was expecting you @hotel @3.00pm.
girl;I couldn't make to the hotel because I went somewhere at 2.00pm.
