Liverpool are trying to lure James Milner to Anfield by telling him he could be the next Steven Gerrard.

Milner is a free agent at the end of this season and has been able to talk to other clubs since the start of this month.

Negotiations between his representatives and Etihad bosses about a new deal have been on-going for more than five months – but a deal still hasn’t been reached.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini is desperate to keep the versatile star and remains confident of securing his services.

But Milner knows the Chilean will be trying to sign midfield reinforcements this summer and wants assurances he will still be an integral part of his plans.

The Express claim that money is not an issue for the 29-year-old.

Instead, the England ace wants regular game-time and the Kop are trying to tempt him to move by offering him the chance to be Gerrard’s replacement in their engine room.

Arsenal are interested too and they see his tenacity and energy as the perfect foil for some of their flair players.

Pellegrini said yesterday: “When you are trying to sign a contract you need both parties to agree to it, so maybe that’s why it’s not so easy to get it signed.

“But I repeat, the most important thing is that the club wants Milner to stay here, and he has to decide what he wants to do with his future.”
