The levelling of oshodi will be perfect if he can lower the rent of the lock-up shops that were allocated for the traders. The prices are too dear for the common tomato seller by the rail track.

My uncle said they are planning a more organized shopping mall not a golf field like rumour has it. one that will be inspected weekly but will have the traders pay little taxes. Many more demolishing to come in Lagos state as his friend who is a commissioner in Lagos told him. He said the fear is that foreign investors with more money to invest with might kill the local Business women and men just like they did in Jamaica. So they are trying as hard as possible to make sure Nigerian traders have all the shares in the plan.

It's a good thing but I doubt by the time bribes come in millions of dollars they'll keep their words.
Many foreign companies now have their eyes on Nigeria because they know Nigerians are demanding and are willing to pay for better life. MTN and Vmobile has exposed us to some good and danger.

Tell your rich uncles abroad to invest in Nigeria now else we'll lose the wealth that comes with large population and be left with poverty that comes with it just like crude oil has done us. wink

Work is going on rapidly in Lagos,,,
Next things i want the government look into is the issue of people selling on the pedestrian bridges across Lagos. those people won't use their brains for once,
When the bridge in Ijesha Express collapsed, i thought that would have taught the bridge sellers lesson, yet they proved me wrong by always dragging the Cele bridge with pedestrians,

What point(s) are some of you guys trying to make?! That it is good and comely for an express and major way leading from one state to another to be turned to market place? I can't believe any sensible and educated person could condemn what Gov. Fashola is doing to Lagos presently.

Though Agege motor way in Oshodi (popularly called Oshodi market), has been a place many families earn their living; it should also be noted that the place has also (over a long period) become the den of miscreants, robbers and thugs. The road which was built purposely for the ease movement of vehicles has become a dreaded rough for commuters because of the fact the some people took it upon themselves to block the road all in the name selling their wares. For God's sake, should that be the case?

I personally believe that we need iron hand to bring other to Lagos state and Nigeria as a whole. We know the right thing but we find it easy to do the wrong thing. One thing I have also noted is that we find it difficult to accept change most especially positive ones.

Please note that the government has provided alternative place for those who may not be able to afford the prices of the new market. They have been provided a place at Ilasamaja. What other things do u want from the Government.

It should also be noted that the government of Fashola is not only interested in burning illegal markets and beautifying Lagos with flowers, he has also been actively involved in construction of roads even in places you'll never dream of having tarred roads. He does not just give contracts out but supervises and sees to successful completion of whatever project is assigned to a contractor. This is the only Governor in Nigeria that takes his work very seriously. He is never late to the office and closes at stipulated closing time or latter. He does not waste the state money on tours outside the country.

In conclusion, I hate voting during election but should Fashola decides to contest the next election (provided he continues his good works) I will vote for him. Three Gbosas for Gov. Fashola. Eko o ni baje o, O baje ti.

@farotika,
I agree with you totally. Oshodi before this was a place of filth and was so much of an eyesore to everyone passing through there. I remember in my secondary school days at CMS Grammar school that I used to rue the fact that I had to pass through there on my way home, I mean it was a very nasty sight to behold angry . Even some friends I had back then at Unilag will say, instead of passing through Oshodi to Festac, they had better charter a Cab to take them there because the alternative route ( Orile-Oyingbo) was also not so good, in terms of means of transportation and traffic congestion.

Also, Oshodi was also den of robbers, especially at night. I remember once getting to Oshodi at about 11pm at Night ,as I was caught up in traffic congestion somewhere else; as I was attempting to cross the road to walk up the road to Oshodi-OKe in order to get a bus going to Mile 2, a good samaritan, I suppose who lived in the area warned me to be careful about using that road; however he offered to escort me to Oshodi-Oke. As we walked up the road we could see people smoking,  what smelled so much like Cannabis (Indian-Hemp), and they called out to us in codes which the samaritan seemed to understand, because he also replied in a certain way, and so they left us to pass through. I was so grateful to the samaritan that I gave him some money to buy a bottle of drink for himself because I imagined what would have happened if he was not with me.

Thus, I support the action of the Lagos State Govt. to rid Oshodi of filth, crime, chaos and disorderliness. cool

However, the Govt. should make sure that the baby is not thrown out with the bad water by ensuring that the traders who are affected by this excersise are given affordable alternative places to trade. cool

What i highlighted in bold is one thing that bothers me a bit. I hope that Nigeria gets flooded with investors in order to improve the economy, create jobs, create services, generate revenue for government via taxation etc. I also hope that a significant chunk of such investors are Nigerians or that Nigerians earn some stake in the investments. Perhaps this is a good time to start addressing policies that are both pro business and economically sound and inviting to investors but also protects the nation's wealth. Perhaps something in line with america's take on it whereby a foreign citizen can not solely own more than a certain percentage of big businesses like airlines.

Nobody is saying the lagos govt should not clean the area, but it must be done with human approach. They had option, let station KAI people in the area who would prevent people from selling at that location. Look every government in lagos have tried this same thing, it as not worked.

Why?? Because the government have fail in its duty to provide alternative for the people. Provide alternative and nobody would sell in those area.

Now you have people who have lost their means of supporting their family because of inhuman decision taken. this same people have to look for alternative and the alternative may be ARM ROBBERING. And I know alot of igbos do trade area that area. Some of them do not have others means of support, they have families and don't be shock if they start robbing people. Life does not live vacuum.

A govt must always provide alternative for his people. let someone who can provide come in. But i also understand that the cheating that the north have in the census figure. Where the north who are about 30 % of Nigeria population get 70% of Oil revenue. And lagos can not provide for the large population. That why Fashola should come out boldly and support the desire of the Yorubas to join the republic of Benin. With the economy and budget in our hand we would be able to give Fashola enough money to excutive project. The western niger governor have to know, that we need men to be governors and not women. They have to bold men. Who are ready to represent their people and not party. People voted you and not party. Boni is Yorubas Yar Adua is not Yoruba,, so that why yar adua does not care for the suffering of the Yoruba people. And if Yar adua and his people does not care for Yorubas why should the yorubas support them. It does not make any business sense. look, People should not be scared of war. they can not win. I am saying this with 100% confident. Eni ta bo. They should take us to the world court, we have prove.

And fashola and other governors in the western niger have to support this movement. You would be getting at least 3 times what you are getting , lagos or any of the state would be getting 3 times allocation. Yorubas would say, if you are been burn by fire, you take care of yourself before you take care of others.

Now what are the alternative to Ishodi.

Here is my solution to oshodi problem. The first question you ask yourself, why do people come to Oshodi. The answer lies in satellite pictures, Oshodi is the centre to everywhere in Mega lagos.

The solution is to relocated the resident houses and build a very extreme large market. But while you take over people comes. build alternative houses in Ikorodu and give them to the onwer of the houses with one year notification. Do not give them money. they would marry new wife with it. (joke)

If you increase the market land space to about 3 to 5 times its size, you would solve the problem. And also include a very big open field, while with stores backing the road. No store should face the road. Locate the parking far from the site. and create a bypass for the expressway.

Lagos most have a office abroad looking for investment. Investment do no come to nation , cities seek for investment.

Oga Become rich,

You suggested that KAI officials should have been stationed to prevent people from selling at that spot. The difference between your suggestion and what Fashola has done is in efficiency but they both serve same purpose. Fashola did not destroy all the shops in Oshodi, just the ones blocking the
roads.

If KAI officials were deployed to prevent them, they would still not be able to trade abi? Same way they cant trade now and you are criticizing the fact that the people aint allowed to trade.

let look at the positive side of life.

we need good environment, straight roads with motorable cars, clean waters, unlimited light

if all the above and much more need to be enjoyed then we will see more of Fashola whip; like that of Jesus in the temple
Re: Pictures Of Oshodi Market Demolition by Mikalaika: 3:08pm On Jan 10, 2009
Business is a commercial activity that is meant to generate profit and ensure career advancement. It is meant to ensure Physiological and psychological satisfaction.
Mr Romeo what you don't understand is that there is no short route to making it in business. One needs to plan well and administer his/her business according to plan in order to gain the business goal which is profit making and ensuring of maximum satisfaction. However, Mordernisation have brought with it the necessity to ensure flexibilty and application of strategic schema in ensuring the attainment of business goals. This means that a business man now needs to monitor changes in the Macro-environment and adjust accordingly to avoid bsiness failures.
Were the Traders in Oshodi too blind to see this coming? If they were not making it in the business they were doing, that means something is wrong. They either have to go back to the drawing board, or volountarily shut down their businesses, or wait for failure to meet up with them. How can you explain the fact that with the enormous traffic in Oshodi, what we were seeing was a complete death in infrastructures and show of shame by fellow Nigerians.
For example how can a trader rent an illegal shop to fry akara. After a year or three years he or she has not been able to make enough money to move to a legal position. Is the person running a Non-Profit organisation? Is she not surpposed to be making profits? No matter how little the profit maybe, it can help in atleast ensuring some little changes.
In China, Singapore, HongKong, United states, United Kingdom, Oshodi could never have existed, Never!
It's a pity that you think one needs to travel to know simple rudiments of modern business. Even a shoe maker knows that when a trade becomes more sophisticated, more customers can be gotten. A Street hawker that sells to school children knows that when schools are on holiday, the homes of their customers should be concentrated on.
Re: Pictures Of Oshodi Market Demolition by maedan(f): 10:33pm On Jan 10, 2009
getting rid of d oshodi mess: good start. But the megacity project? How can u squeeze that unto a small, over- populated region? Oh well, miracles happen. Don't mean to compare LAG to the FCT again, but in Abuja, there was ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. (Pun seriously intended).

by d way, some posts read like dissertations and not comments. I think replies should be summarized as much as possible, some people (like me) try to read every post but when some of them are like 20 paragraphs long . . .

Its a really nice idea cleaning up lagos.
The place had over the years become an icon of filth and disarray.
We all know no meaningful change comes without some sacrifice which may be painful many times.
what bothers me most is that all these people complain about the government in lagos and yet they refuse to go back to their states and demand good governance from their stealing governors instead they keep trooping to lagos and bringing more relatives with more squalor and filth.
If you feel somewhere isnt nice to you ,go home and demand for your rights from your governor abi na by force to stay lagos?
Re: Pictures Of Oshodi Market Demolition by zoraro(m): 11:41pm On Jan 11, 2009
Although I support the government's effort to beautify Lagos it should be done in a more humane manner. It is easier to destroy than to build. The government burnt Tedeosho Market (Near Yaba) many mouths ago but it's taking forever to rebuild it, same for the other Oshodi Market (by the fly-over).

If the government was serious about relocating the traders they would have conducted a census/registration of the affected traders beforehand and given them priority/concession when proper stalls are available for sale. Relocating them to an obscure location is not proper either (the major attraction of Oshodi for these traders is its centrality).

@ reindeer, if someone was born in Lagos or have lived long here or pays taxes to the Lagos Government. I think Government and that person should consider Lagos as his/her home.

Ogbeni Becomerich,

Every government in Lagos might have tried this in the past and it might not work for them, but Fashola is not every government and believe it or not its already working. Coming to office this morning, I passed thru Oshodi and I cant just believe the miracles that are taking place there; the place is simply getting transformed. Those of u who believe good thing cannot happen in this land will surely be disappointed tongue tongue tongue

Mind u sir, alternatives have been provided. Although may not be perfect and parmanent, but its ok for now.

Anybody who wants to become an armed robber is welcome in Lagos state. The government is prepared for them, come to Lagos and u'll see RRS everywhere and in every Street. Fashola is not dumb like some people.

Bros, we dont need tribalistic people in this tread, most of us still believe in one Nigeria and that's how its going to be. If u're interested in war, please be the leader just maybe some foolish people like u will join ur forces. Moreover, if u have Yoruba as a nation, wont you latter seek for Oyo nation or Egba nation b/cos one will want to dominate another just like Hausas.

Egbon, if u dont know it, Lagos state is generating quite enough money internally to finance its projects. Hence, Federal Allocation or no, Lagos will survive and by 2011, u'll join me to hail Fashola.

Eko o ni baje o!!! O baje ti.

i passed oshodi on my way from work via Ilupeju today,2 weeks after i started this topic.

can you believe that i had to queue to climb the pedestrian bridge to get to the other side which hitherto had been the living quarters for the destitute in this busy centre of Lagos?

i was so amazed that i decided to take some beautiful pictures of the new Oshodi featuring well behaved Lagosians and KAI not forgetting the ever hardworking LASTMA workers.
