Why is it a bad habit to brake with one's left foot?

personally, i find i can drive faster and with more confidence, as i can react just that much quicker, almost instantly to any event. switching my right foot from the accelerator pedal to the brake just seems very time consuming. i know not a lot of time, but when you are driving fast, its the little reactions that count.

but i have heard many times that it is a bad habit. please in detail tell me why. thanks

It's bad driving to brake with the left foot simples, no too much grammar needed.

Can you break with left foot when driving a manual car?

its a racing practice

and racing driver sometimes use it in the everyday driving

but the problem is no ordinary drivers is that, the left foot is left leaning on the pedal therefore misleading people behind you as they think you are braking and you are not and it is annoying to the driver behind you

just imagine you are bumpy road that left foot is leaning the brake and the brake light is on and off and you are the driver behind, wont you feel pissed with driver?

the technic is for racing general driver makes it worse by leaving the foot leaning on brakes therefore its either you brake light are always on or on and off when you are not braking at all

Using left foot to brake would cause sharp braking at times which can cause the driver behind you to curse you or worse still slam into you.

Only insecure drivers use their left leg for braking while driving automatics, I also did that when I started driving because the car wasn't mine and I felt insecure but I gained confidence and stopped using it. The right leg can do a better job in braking in unforseen circumstances just make sure your braking system is in optimum working condition.

I cannot coordinate the movement of the two legs.

Actually it's not good because of instinctive reflexes. Let me explain better.

If someone taps u from behind unknowingly and throws an object towards you . . there are 2 actions to be taken:

1- Duck/dogde
2 - Catch the object.

Studies have revealed that, right-handed ppl with always catch unawares with their right hands, and vice-versa

So in a emergency situation; if you're right-handed, your brain will automatically move your right leg . . without your consent
and you would be slamming on the ACCELERATOR pedal (because your left leg is already on the brake pedal). You know the rest of the story . . SUICIDE !!!

That's why there is a "dead pedal" in automatics . . it's was built there so you could actually rest you left feet idly there . . .
The dead pedal is right there besides the brake pedal, not actually a pedal but a raised platform where u should keep your left feet . . .

Also, most people have ended up having better/stronger right-sided attributes, e.g stronger right hands, stronger right legs . . Even left-handed people have grown to develop stronger right-hands . . So in driving . . due to the arrangement of the pedals . . the right-leg is used almost 99% of the time . .hence, more power.

Therefore, slamming on the brakes with the right leg would yield better result, than the left leg . .

That what they say, we learn every day if we took time to read, the dead pedal I just learned today though I don't place my left leg on it, all the time. I actually thought the dead pedal was for cars who had both manual and auto variant, so if u wanted to switch from auto to manual, the dead pedal spot would be removed and clutch pedal would be fixed there but then I also had a prob with cars with only auto so what was that spot for, so I thought since cars generally came with 3 pedals in the olden days, they just didn't want to change the design. Now I know what it is, thanks.

You're mostly welcome. but please take note, that the dead pedal also exists in manual transmission vehicles too.
In layman's term, its called a footrest, where a driver is supposed to rest his or her "left foot".
In manual transmission, the dead pedal keeps ur left foot elevated in the same level with the clutch . . .
In auto transmission, it was built mainly to prevent fatigue . . Most people drive with their left legs stamped on the floorboard . . After some time, ur legs starts aching you seriously . . The dead pedal also allows the driver to take of his / her left feet off the brake pedal . . to prevent accidental left-foot braking (or permanently turned on brake lights even when the car is not braking)

very good explanation i must say. i must confess it has happened to me oonce, only once, when i mistakenly tapped the accelerator instead of the brake.

i try to drive with just my right, but but. as i go faster, my brain tells me to put the left foot back on the brake, you know just in case. i guess with time i can rid myself of the habit.

I use my left for brake when driving auto. I have been doing that since 2003 and have never made a single mistake with it. Since 2012 I have always been on the road on long distance journeys because of a research I am conducting and still conducting, and not for once have I made any mistake. Now, the thing is what somebody failed at should not be regarded as something everybody will fail at doing. I am concious of what I am doing at every fucking minute behind the steering wheel. Do not copy me anyway as might style of driving might put u in trouble. I have been driving auto anyway after I dumped manual cars since 2003. And no matter what, manual aint my thing and I will never return to it.
But there is a reason I use my left leg for brake; unfortunately that is not for public discussion, but u can deduce from my licence as it reads CLASS J. I bet those with brains will get it.

Brother, I understand the J category, you don't have to explain any further.

All the best with things, and I hope your survey yields positive results. smiley

Hahahahhhhhhhhhahhhhhhhhhahhahahaha. I got it. The thing is I never use brake except it is necessary. I think the problem lies with people who are naturally righty but wants to just use left by force or just want to combine the two legs. Then those who are easily distracted and still want to use left. There is no need of even placing ur left on the brake at all until when needed. keep the left where it belongs until it is needed. It is very simple and not hard or difficult at all. Keeping the left foot on the brake pedal wears off your brake pads easily and I dont think that is good economically.
