The House of Reps on February 19, Thursday, mandated its Committee on Land Transport to investigate the use of Hiace buses for commercial transportation.The investigation became imperative after an accident involving 11 female supporters of Nigeria’s first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan who lost their lives in a ghastly auto crash thatoccurred on Saturday night, February 14.

According to Premium Times, Honorable Stella Dorgu (Bayelsa-PDP), who moved the motion raised the concern that many buses often burst into flames in the event of accident resulting in deaths.

The law maker cited the recent road accident in Bayelsa that led to the death of some prominent female politicians from the state to buttress her point.

She said that the politicians were burnt to death when their vehicles were involved in multiple crashes on the East-West road, Ahoada, Rivers.

“The road, which is under construction, has claimed the lives of many Nigerians on various occasions including Mrs. Imari Oba (mother of First Lady, Patience Jonathan) on July 23, 2013.

‘’Unnamed women and children burnt beyond recognition on 15 Nov. 15, 2013 and seven other Nigerians were killed in another vehicle crash on the road on Dec. 26, 2013.”It would be recalled that Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, has said that a mass burial will be conductedfor deceased female politicians. The decision was reached with the families of the dead because the corpses were burnt beyond recognition.

So they could not decode that if banning a brand of vehicle because it's involved in road mishap has been the rule, we would not have any vehicle left in Nigeria,

My point is banning a brand of vehicle because of road accident is not a good step in accident prevention unless investigation has confirmed such suspicion.

What about looking at the causes in areas like bad roads, drunk driving, over speeding, reduced vision of some drivers, ensuring that those issued driving license have been adequately tested, overloading, making calls when driving. Talking about banning Hiace is selfish and lame.

Now wey human beings don cum die, una no go check weda driver head dem correct or weda road good or weda na excess speed, na to ban! Must these lazy arses always take d easy way out? This is overly irrational and petty

The said house forgot so easily that the said brand of commuter bus is predominantly use in Nigeria in commuting its citizens to and fro therefore is more likely to be the model to involve in an eccident

The said law makers forgot so easily like my mentor living in London do say if he visit Nigeria "you don't speed with Belgium and obsolete autos" whenever he sees old vehicle speeding ; that 80% percent of those hiace buses are pretty much old, a law is needed to pull them off our road Instead of banning them
