Can I Open My Door To The Police Without A Search Warrant? by dwilliams: 4:44am On Feb 23, 2015
Good morning my co-forumites, I am a penultimate student in one of the tertiary institutions in the country, we have had series of police brutality over the past few years, illegal searches, illegal arrest, illegal seizure of student properties and illegal searches such as the police stopping us on the road, and going through our phone book and inbox all in the name of fishing out yahoo boys,You dare not be caught with a laptop here, if you do u will be accused of being a yahoo boy, The most disturbing aspect of these their act is that they go unannounced to students hostels outside the school and make forced entrances without a warrant. The question I would like to ask here is. 1)Do the police have the full constitutional Right to search laptops and phones of students without a warrant? 2)Can I deny the police the right to search my room without a warrant? Please for my Nl critics, I have been searched severally and I have never been found wanting,I don't have anything I am hiding from the law but I feel its an infringement on my constitutional rights to be continuosly harassed by the police, Please gentlemen and ladies of the law please we need your opinions here.

Thanks for creating such an informative thread op

No1. The police does not have the right to arrest anyone with out an arrest warrant

No2. The police does not have the right to search your house without a search warrant granted by a judge

No3. The police does not have the right to keep you behind bars for 24 hours with our telling you your offense and granting you a phone call to whom eber you might wanna call

Most of us in nigeria don't know our civil right, even does of us that know we don't exercise it the way we ought to

Nigerian police only issue warrant of arrest to some public figures....... For an ordinary man, it's by fire by force search/arrest.

My brother, police uniform and ID card has granted power of attorney to search and arrest in some cases. Please don't mislead people. Corporate with security personnel.

I think they should not just hijack people and search them for no tangible reason or without a search warrant but this is Nigeria, everything is upside-up,the police are evil, the fear of police and what they can do is the beginning of wisdom,
Its cos of our state of lawlessness sha, God help us.
