POLICE BRUTALITY: DAWN OF A NEW ERA!!!
It was like a nightmare that spilled over to reality.
I would have thought before now, that the times of police brutality and assaults on hapless citizens were long gone with the days of apartheid, slavery, dictatorship, etc… But I was wrong!
On Wednesday the 18th of February 2015, at around 8pm, I was walking home from work along the shoreline of Lekki beach, with a colleague, when I stopped at the proposed location of a new work site. As I was describing what was to be done to this colleague, I noticed the lights of a car that came into the beach.
Assuming it to be a couple lovey-dovey thing (which is quite usual at this time, around the area), I continued discussing with my colleague. A while later, the car approached and stopped right in front of us, with its headlights blazing at us.
Irritated, I calmly walked to the side and the car moved a little forward and stopped beside us. From inside the car, the driver asked rather rudely what we were doing there. I refrained from answering him at first, and when he asked again, I replied that he should mind the way he talks to people, and that as he should have seen that we were discussing.
I hardly finished speaking when he jumped out of the car and gave me a hard push. When I regained balance, I told him that was unnecessary and checked out his name. I called it and said that we would have to go to the station to resolve this. Before I knew what was happening, he gave me a straight punch that landed on my mouth, splitting my lip in two immediately!
When I came to, I grabbed him that we have to go to the police station or nothing else. He then called out to his second officer sitting in the car and barked an order to him (I’m not certain what he said). The officer then came down with his rifle, and on sighting the rifle, I instinctively rushed at him, having at the back of my mind, tales of “Accidental Discharges”, over the years.
At this point, my colleague was being manhandled by the same officer, and because my colleague saw that I refrained from hitting at the officer, he had to do same (which the officer capitalized on to hit him indiscriminately!)
I shouted at a neighbor who rushed to the scene and tried holding off the officer with the gun. At this point, the main officer attempted to enter his car and leave and I rushed and grabbed him again, shouting that he could not leave like that.
He then grabbed my shirt by my neck with his left hand, and started pulling me towards the car with his right hand. At first I was not aware of what he was up to until he had entered the car that was running all these while.
He then began to move the car and I immediately let go off him, but to my astonishment, he still held on to my shirt! He then drove unto the main road with me running alongside! When he increased the speed, I lost balance and fell headlong on the gravel ground, immediately incurring serious multiple injuries on my shoulder, hands, scalp and face and dislocation of my shoulder bone!!!
For a few seconds, I thought I had been run over by the car as I felt nothingness. When I got myself, I got up and saw the officer gunning his car towards me. I then picked up some small stones and hurled at him while avoiding being hit by the oncoming car!
At this point, I knew I had to try and leave this scene as this was becoming too deadly. I then ran towards my workplace and got my partner to follow me to the police station. I was with the I.D. card and rope attached to the uniform of the officer (which I got hold of during the struggle), whose identity is ASP. A. JOSEPH, a.k.a. Monitor, (driving a Hilux van with inscription RRS 307 by the side).
When we got there, I tended the ID card and the rope and was making a statement when I collapsed (I was getting weaker as I had lost a lot of blood). Afterwards, my partner then carried me to the hospital…
After all the treatments, I sent a message to Channels TV before I lost consciousness. The next morning, the officer came to my bedside, begging that he was sorry, that it was the devil! Later on, I went to the station with them to withdraw the case from the police station; after much psychological pressure from the police.
I hereby seek assistance for justice, from concerned influential citizens; not just for myself, but mainly for the millions of Nigerians who indiscriminately suffer from molestation, abuse, intimidation, harassments, and sometimes, death; in the hands of the men of the Nigerian Police Force.
…A NEW ERA OF FREEDOM AND HUMAN DIGNITY BEGINS NOW!!!

Sorry for your ill treatment. Why would you want to grab a police officers weapon, do you think he would let you disarm him. You should have simply let things lie or simply memorize his name and number then sue him to court if you have the money. From your testimony, you said that you were on his way and he enquired why you blocked him, you responded and he felt insulted, then he pushed you. From this part you would have acted wisely but you chose to fight him even trying to disarm him. Guy if na USA, dat police officer go shoot you to death. Please people, know when to form macho abeg.

Sorry about your encounter with the police but I must advise - I don't think it's wise to hold a policeman who is armed, especially at night. Some of them can be very wicked and if he had gotten the opportunity he could have pulled that trigger. The truth is that it's never safe to hold a man who is armed.

. Why would you want to grab a police officers weapon,

that act may have saved the lives of the guy and his friend.

i do not know when he realized he was being accosted by officers of the law and what he did to defuse the situation.
instead he was busy trying to get their names.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
