The five Nigerians named in the extensive list are the country’s first President Nnamdi Azikiwe, acclaimed novelist Chinua Achebe, Nobel literary laureate Wole Soyinka, controversial Pastor T.B. Joshua and current President Goodluck Jonathan.

The record, which includes both the living and dead, contains business people, scientists, writers, musicians, sportspersons, painters, physicians, singers, dancers, film and theatre personalities, activists, intellectuals, academics, fashion icons, media personalities, leaders, lawyers, engineers and inventors.

Joshua was included in the section of ‘spiritual and religious leaders’ with the likes of the Dalai Lama, Pope Francis, Martin Luther King Jr and Mother Teresa.

The country with the highest number of individuals is the United States which has 1487 people. “The biographies of these people feature the achievements and works that have influenced the course of history,” the website concludes.

Nnamdi Azikiwe - http://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/benjamin-nnamdi-azikiwe-2457.php
Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe was the first President of Nigeria. Before becoming the president he served as the second and last Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria, and was also the first Nigerian named to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. A principled and much loved politician, he began his career as an educator at the Lincoln University, teaching political science. He always had a profound interest in politics and was also a very eloquent writer. He devised a "Syllabus for African History" and penned several books outlining his pan-African ideology. Eventually he became a newspaper editor and promoted a pro-African nationalist agenda. Fiercely independent, he was never afraid of openly expressing his thoughts and opinions. During that time Nigeria was reeling under British rule and he founded a newspaper called ‘The West African Pilot’ to fight for independence from the British colonial rule. He joined Nigerian Youth Movement (NYM), one of the first nationalist organizations in Nigeria and entered politics. He held numerous posts during his illustrious political career and ultimately became the first President of Nigeria when the country became a republic in 1963. However, he was removed from power following a military coup in 1966 and narrowly escaped assassination attempts on his life.

Goodluck Jonathan - http://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/goodluck-jonathan-5599.php
Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan is a Nigerian politician who became the President of Nigeria in 2010 and has been serving in this position since then. Prior to assuming the office of the president he had served as the Vice-President of Nigeria and Governor of Bayelsa State. Jonathan has played a very important role in Nigerian politics ever since he became involved with the emerging People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the late 1990s. His rise to the top in Nigerian politics is very remarkable given that he was born into a humble family of canoe makers with no background in politics. He holds a doctorate in zoology and has served as an assistant director at the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission. It was only in the late 1990s that he joined politics and within years established himself as one of the most prominent politicians in his country. He was made Vice-President of Nigeria after having served as the Governor of Bayelsa State. In this position he maintained a low-profile even as he played a significant role in negotiating with militants in the Niger delta. He served as the Acting President when the incumbent President Yar'Adua took a leave of absence because of illness and succeeded him as the President of Nigeria upon his death.

T.B. Joshua - http://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/t-b-joshua-5692.php
Temitope Balogun Joshua is a Nigerian televangelist and faith healer; he is one of the most influential personalities in Africa. Believed to have been born after being in his mother’s womb for 15 months and also having survived a near-death accident as an infant, he rose to become a self-proclaimed spiritual messenger of the almighty. Obedient to the divine call, he started a ministry with a mere eight members, of which he currently serves as the General Overseer. He is the leader and founder of the ministry organization ‘The Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN)’ which spreads his religious teachings and messages around the world. The ministry started very small, but has now grown far beyond the shores of Nigeria. The organization also runs a Christian television station called Emmanuel TV, and has gathered a large following over the years across the globe. He is also a notable humanitarian, providing aid to minorities and the underprivileged. Today, as a man of faith, he is both a representative of God and of people. He has published numerous videos claiming to document the healing of incurable disabilities and illnesses such as HIV/AIDS. He is considered to be one of those who have submitted to the will of God and embrace every act of the almighty with love and respect.

Chinua Achebe - http://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/chinua-achebe-1044.php
Called "the father of modern African writing", Chinua Achebe was one of the most widely read novelists from Nigeria who played a pivotal role in the development of African literature. Considered to be a major writer in not just the country of his birth but throughout the world, his debut novel ‘Things Fall Apart’ has sold over 12 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 50 languages. As an academically brilliant student at school he was often praised by his teachers for his reading skills. He easily got accepted into a prestigious college where he discovered his love for African culture and reading. He began writing during his university years and became a teacher after graduation. A voracious reader, he was disappointed with the European interpretation of African culture and disturbed by the non-African authors’ ignorance about Africa and its people. Determined to present a realistic picture of Africa to the world, he set about writing his novel ‘Things Fall Apart’ which was published after considerable editing and revising. The book was well received and went on to become one of the most significant books in African literature. He wrote several other critically acclaimed novels and eventually won the Man Booker International Prize.

There are some surprising omissions - but I guess we are talking about 'global' impact here, not just 'regional' or 'national'. Nice to see that TBJ is being acknowledged again. Albeit unconventional, he really is a great asset to Nigeria.

See why we should abandon the retrogressive policy of quota system! We have how many ethnicities in Nigeria again?......and yet those recognized as Nigerian born global icons are from just two ethnic groups out of hundreds!

It's interesting to have a look at the list of religious and spiritual leaders that made the list! Only five of them are still alive - Pope Francis, the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Rick Warren, Rowan Douglas Williams and T.B. Joshua! The rest are all honoured posthumously.

I only see three people who merit being on tht list, achebe, soyinka and TB Joshua...tht list should acknowledge how famous those people are all over the world, for instance wht makes GEJ appear on the list wht is the difference between him and other past presidents? OBJ was much more famous during his time, Abacha was infamous, lol but no one can deny knowing those people, ZIK isn't that famous too as to be on that list. My two cents

That Zik of Africa is not what, the only man you can find his name in nigeria constitution, that single handedly negotiated nigeria independence,Zik assisted Ghana to fight colonialism through his west african pilot established in Ghana before he championed our own independence

so does it merit being among the five most famous people ever out of Nigeria? I guess u didn't get my point so no use arguing with you. I gave you three names the world knows, those are the most famous people recognised outside of Nigeria and I think only those three enjoy total recognition the world over and you come here to tell me abt ZIK influence in Ghana, what abt OBJ's fight for the black southafricans during apartheid, do you know how popular tht made him? Yet he still doesn't enjoy tht fame the other three enjoy, just face it.

Zik of Africa as Nnamdi is called has to do with his contribution to the emancipation of colonialism in Africa, for the fact that you don't know his impact doesn't remove anything from his status.
