The trial of the former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori in England cost £14million (about N3.5billion), it was learnt yesterday.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs, Narcotics, Financial Crimes and Anti- Corruption, Senator Victor Lar, announced this when the anti-graft agencies defended their 2015 budgets before his committee in Abuja.

But Lar said the Ibori case was prosecuted at no cost to the Federal Government.

He saw no need to amend the enabling laws of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) so they could receive funding directly from the Federation Account.

Lar said: “ the conviction was secured with very limited or no funds. People are quick to celebrate the conviction of James Ibori in the United Kingdom. The truth is that to secure Ibori’s conviction, a whooping sum of £14million was expended.

“That is more than 10 years recurrent and capital budgets of all the anti-corruption agencies put together.”

He added that other countries were able to prosecute financial crimes successfully because a percentage of funds recovered or the proceeds of crime was usually retained by the recovering agency for funding their operations.

He stated that most Nigerians are impatient and believe that politically exposed persons are corrupt and should be convicted.

He, however said that “the truth is that we observe the rule of law and once you are accused you are taken to court. You have to go through court processes.”

He added: “Once you are arrested and taken to court, it is outside the control of the enforcement agencies.

“So it is not entirely the fault of the enforcement agencies that there is corruption in the country.

“This administration has fought corruption more than any other time because we have more petitions; more people are taken to court and we have more convictions now more than ever before.”

14million pounds to send a man 2 jail for 'mere stealing'..Then its not worth it,if justice is that expensive.pdp government using every opportunity to embezzle public funds.

That is why most criminals in Nigeria are moving in the street freely, because you have to spend to bring substantial evidence

This is another issue why I appreciate President Jonathan, he said in Lagos that, its better to put machinery on ground to make sure people don't have the opportunity to commit in the first instance, which I believe is better, not when somebody has already stolen we begins going to court.

If the malpractices associated with the fertilizer distribution could be curbed, why not extend it to other departments and parastatals

Guys you all need to watch/read this interviews done by Mo Abudu for Gen Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan. Decide who to vote after the interviews as both of them spoke for 30mins on their plans and why they should be re elected. I don't know why the posts haven't made frontpage.

For Buhari's interview read here; https://www.nairaland.com/2169464/ebonylive-tv-interview-gmb-why

For Jonathan's interview, read here: https://www.nairaland.com/2169459/ebonylive-tv-interview-gej-why

Excuses! Ibori got a soul slamming sentence which was in the same mould of Alams misdemeanour charge.

The Nigerian courts however decided to give a questionable 2 years which was probably spent in a luxurious prison or mansion. With a 'stealing is not corruption' Government in power. The same Alams is now running for senate after a Presidential pardon.

But a man that steals a goat, gets 5 years plus hard labour.
Stop deceiving your selves.

Lies!

They should give a breakdown of how the £14m was spent and where the money came from.

The United Kingdom was the government that secured Ibori's conviction (he broke UK's AML &BC laws) and he is currently being jailed at the expense of UK taxpayers like myself, so I don't understand how EFCC would have spent £14m to "convict" Ibori. Bunch of liars!

If they claim to have spent that much, then how much did UK's government spend to secure the conviction of Ibori, his lawyer (who helped in concealing the funds), his wife and his mistress? undecided

I expect Ibori to be tried and convicted by a competent court in Nigeria and then sent to a Nigerian prison for Bribery, Corruption and Money Laundering. Only then can EFCC boast of spending any money on his "conviction". angry

**modified**
So apparently he brought up the money spent on Ibori's conviction by the UK government to justify the budget for EFCC? What's the bloody sense in that? Bloody f00ls.

It's obvious they are looking for justification so as to get a fat budget which we all know will end in private bank accounts.

After Yar'Adua was selected as their presidential candidate, Ibori was accused of bank-rolling Yar'Adua's 2007 camapaign, and promised a Vice-Presidential position in return. But after Yar'Adua died in office, Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan succeeded Yar'Adua, an avowed political opponent of Ibori

Imagine if this guy had become president? This country would have become poorer than Bangladesh undecided

On December 17, 2009, A Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, discharged and acquitted Ibori of all 170 charges of corruption brought against him by EFCC

Unbelievable

On Tuesday, April 17, 2012, Ibori was sentenced to 13 years by Southwark Crown Court for his crimes.[38][39] Among possessions confiscated were:[38]

A house in Hampstead, north London, for £2.2m
A property in Shaftesbury, Dorset, for £311,000
A £3.2m mansion in Sandton, near Johannesburg, South Africa
A fleet of armoured Range Rovers valued at £600,000
A £120,000 Bentley Continental GT
A Mercedes-Benz Maybach 62 bought for €407,000 cash, that was shipped direct to his mansion in South Africa
After the sentencing hearing, Sue Patten, head of the Crown Prosecution Service central fraud group, said it would bid to confiscate the assets Ibori had acquired his riches "at the expense of the some of the poorest people in the world".[38]

but still we see these politicians on the street and we hail them like they are our kings not knowing that we are in fact the real kings and their employers. Nigerians we need to wise up abeg.

Nigerians are the problems with themselves! Quote me anywhere, Nigerians have the highest number of bloody hypocrites in the world when it comes to the corruption.

It is only in Nigeria, That you see somebody touting an anti-corruption slogan and he is still cutting corners in his office, displaying greed all over the place.

How do you expect CHANGE when you are part and parcel of corruption?
Change your ways! Corruption can only be eradicated when you and I are involved.
