For the umpteenth time, Maiduguri is centrally located in Borno State. From just about all corners, roads lead to it from the local government areas, towns and villages. Maiduguri-Baga axis, Maiduguri-Bama axis, Maiduguri-Biu axis, Maiduguri-Damasak axis, Maiduguri-Mafa axis, Maiduguri-Damaturu axis, and so on. Today, these roads are no longer safe like they used to be, the recent sacking of the insurgents notwithstanding.

Of all the roads, however, Maiduguri-Damaturu axis, though marred by intermittent cases of insurgent activities, is relatively calm (compared to the other routes, of course). As a lay observer, I know being proactive entails putting the necessary machinery in place to ensure hapless citizens who gave up their survival-of-the-fittest instinct in the social contract that has reduced them to sacrificial lambs are guaranteed a safe passage from, at least one of the several death routes, to safe haven in other parts of the country.

Invariably, to whom it may concern, Nigerians who seek respite, from the trouble spots, in other parts of the country are being waylaid and slaughtered by gun men believed to be members of the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents. If people can not live in peace in these flash points of terror and theatres of sorrow, they should at least be guaranteed a safe passage to safer places by a system that has breached its part of the contract. In the heat of it all, Niger, Chad and Cameroon are doing a great job of decimating the terrorists at the borders, how come we are free, but not safe from one state to the next?
