I would like us to comment here, the type of things we would like to be seeing in our Nigerian movies...
(Not the things we don't like oo).
.......
As for me,, I would like to see movies that chronicled the life of a young entrepreneur who suffered so much when he was young in the business, and how he finally succeeded thru some good decisions he made.. (and not thru some lucky opportunity from no wia)

I would like to see a movie where someone got stuck in a dense traffic jam, and he decided to step out of his car and control the traffic, only to see some other pple who did the same thing.. And in the process, he met a lady was also controlling traffic with him., and in the end, they ended up being more than just friends. (I would like it if they met again in another traffic jam.. Aaaahahahahahah)

Wonderful. Nigerian producers don't think out of the box. That's why we only see films shot in village settings

Nigerian producers don't invest in their movies.. You would watch a movie, and u end up not seeing any intelligence or serious input in the movie.. I kept asking why nigerians have never acted movies that involved real military men. Why have they not acted movies that solved a crime (or some crimes) using good intelligence which the nigerian police could learn and benefit from.?

You nailed it... They are just enjoying the "Stand-by".... "Action"... "Cut"... And before the month runs out, a silly movie featuring half-nude ladies kissing and romancing some fair cute dudes recklessly in almost every scene would hit the market..
So Lame

You know,, a good producer can picture the Boko-haram situation from the perspective of a resident in Gwoza, or from the perspective of one of those terrorists, and create a good story with a positive impact, add some comic scenes, and capture some live scenes from the war against boko-haram.. And with serious hardwork and good acting, an award-winning movie would be in the markets.. Like I would always say, nigerians are lazy. We hardly use our intelligence in things that are innovative.

The whole Nigerian movies stuff is just like "let me tune in to African-Magic and see if sleep would catch me soon"....... Hehehehheheee.. It can't keep u awake.. I wish to see a movie where a state governor was busy attacking some serious state issues in the government house that resembled the government house of the state they used... And all offices and officers of the state involved, fully showcased in the movie.. Commisioners, perm-secs, legislators, and so on,, depending on the nature of the story in the movie.. This Nigerian Movie "The Meeting" tried in dat aspect shaa, but it centered on the secretary more than the minister himself.. They tried though.

I am hopeful too.. Sometime ago in 1999-2003,, the nigerian music industry was almost not alive. Only traditional music, makossa, awilo, and foreign music reigned then.. Alicia-keys, P-Diddy, bow-wow.. But now, u can see the waves..

For sure.. There are very few Nigerian producers that can thrill us with their movies.
Re: Things We Would Like To Be Seeing In Nigerian Movies by tk4rd: 4:44pm On Mar 19, 2015
Naturally, the things that are happening in the nigerian movie industry is none of my business, but, since it is something that concerns all of us, it became my business.
I am not a stakeholder in the movie industry; neither am I a producer, a director, nor am I an actor. But the simple truth is that, it pains me that we nigerians are not patronising our movies; and it is not our fault.
The fault is in the movies.
The movies are trash.
We don't like them.
A normal nigerian would say "Aaww, Nigerian Movie.? No no no no. I don't watch Nigerian movies. I watch American, Indian or Korean movies".. And if asked why, they would reply "Foreign movies are cool, and they have quality"..
Now I am asking, what is the quality that these foreign movies have that our Nigerian movies don't have.? To be sincere, there are many many many of them.
It is true that some foreign movies are trash too. Not all of them are good. Also, some Nigerian movies are good too in terms of quality and content. But most are Trash.
There is this Nigerian movie, old as it is, yet one of the best Nigerian Movies. - "Living in Bondage".
A look at that movie, someone would just see hardwork and quality, although shot with less technology, yet there were minimum errors, and the plot was sweet, cast was good, and the story well organised.
These days, even with all the video technologies, a producer/director would just think up a certain scenario, and within a week, organise some actors that would fit the scenario, then within a month, the movie is already out with a funky name.. No story to the movie, no planning, no plot, no sequence, no quality, no seriousness, no hardwork. Nothing else would be good about the movie except the very scenario which the producer/director wanted to project, which might even be a very silly scenario..
This is a typical Nigerian Movie for you.
Our directors/producers are either lazy, or are in mad rush or in a haste to release their movies within a month. And in the end, we the viewers would be so busy counting the hundreds of errors and mistakes in the movies, and end up not paying attention to whatever the movie has to offer.
If I may suggest, then, I would say that our producers/directors should first pay attention to the situation they want in the movies.
Not just some scenarios.
For instance, our movies usually portray situations of olden times, ghetto situations, bad nigerian situations, campus cultists situations, romance and romantic situations (which happens to be en-vogue currently, as people produce movies with soft-porn, and yet with no story or quality of content). No producer/director have produced a movie that is projecting a good nigerian environment situation. (They forgot that movies can be used in preaching the good-news of change and transformation in Nigeria.)
A true-life situation or a fictitious situation in which a whole lot of stories can conviniently be formed should be chosen, so as to describe the way or pattern of life that the movie is trying to portray.
Now, with a situation in mind, a story can be formed. A good story. (sweet movies are made up of two or more stories that combine together at certain points to form a complete story, but there should not be more than four stories, so as to minimise ambiguity of the movie). The story determines the scenarios and the plot of the movie..
It is not a must that every movie should contain romance or even soft-porn scenes for it to sell well in the market (as it is in Nigerian movies today).
Every scene and act in the movies should be directed towards the situation that the movie is portraying. An actor that is supposed to be a good man in the movie should portray it fully. Let there be no conflict of characters. They make the movies so distracting.
Finally, there should be Hardwork, both on the side of the crew and the actors. Even the cameos (waka-pass actors) should be serious too.. That someone in a movie is a waka-pass, and so what.? If he doesn't want to get serious on set, then, let him get off the scene totally..
The editing should be perfect too. I hate seeing editing errors, or shadows and reflections of people who are not presently on the scene, or even hearing them murmur in the background.
I am of the opinion that a movie that portrays a good situation, has a nice story (or a nice combination of stories), has catching scenarios (not just one good scenario, and de rest of the movie being trash), has serious acts and good editing, and has evidence of hardwork; would compete favourably with foreign movies.
It is high time the movie producers and directors should start preaching the goodnews of patriotism and how to be good nigerians through the movies they release in the markets.
We have had enough of all these useless movies that has nothing to portray or teach nigerians..
........
SORRY FOR THE LONG WRITE-UP.
This is just the way it touched me.

I hope to see a movie that depicted a true lecture-room situation.. And not just showcasing big-ladies with cars, or cult guys on campus.. But a movie that told a story that has a true lecture-room background..
Aaahahahahahahahaa.. I can bet you that nigerian directors are not intelligent enough to make something good out of such situation naa. Imagine a High-school Nigerian movie how e go be. People standing and moping at the actors like mofos.

As a scriptwriter I understand the frustration of the Nigerian public. I encounter a lot of producers and have noticed some things. Many producers are lazy and do not want to think outside their comfort zone and when you try and show them something different they do not want to go with it insisting rudely that "I am the one putting down the money". It's common knowledge that many producers don't hire good scriptwriters because they don't want to pay good money for ideas (I know how many jobs I have had to reject because of this). I also used to act and you should see the atrocious scripts I have seen. The same thing is repeated in other sectors of Nigerian filmmaking as most producers do not want to pay for quality. Thank God for the new Nollywood producers who are bringing out quality jobs. The major problem is the lack of distribution points like cinemas. If we have more customer friendly cinemas producers will be able to make returns on their investment and make films with bigger budgets. "30 days in Atlanta" made 200 million but it could have made more if there were more cinemas that were cost friendly. Alaba is dying which is why they are resorting to porn movies.

I know that one day, Nigerian movies will be winning international awards..
Now that the nigerian public have started seeing the flaws in the nigerian movie industry and pointing them out, it is now left for the stakeholders and all those people involved to sit up and do what is right..

So I'm going to rant now, bear with me.
I can hardly watch a Nigerian film nowadays because of a lot of problems of which the least is lack of money. Not all of the classics cost a lot of money.
Generally what I'd like in Nigerian movies
- Better Dialogue - apart from our comedy movies, the dialogue in a typical Nigerian film is cringe worthy

- Less Extraneous Scenes/Better Directing - Several time when I'm watching a Nigerian movie, they just cut from something mildly interesting to a completely pointless scene. For example every single club scene. It is any idea the writer comes up with that he thinks might be cool to watch he puts it in regardless of whether it fits the movie or not. They should learn to cut those shit out

- Tighter Plotting - Most Nigerian films do not have an idea of what they are actually doing, they just jump from one scene to another without any cohesion and sometimes leave the viewers wondering what the hell is happening on screen.

Some Movie scenarios
The Traffic Jam story has potential. It can be a great bottle neck story focusing mainly on characterizations and smart comedy. There is potential for some great conflicts there.

A biographical movie. We have some great people that biographies would make sense for. For instance Kanu.

A movie focusing on the key players in the period leading to independence that is done well can be an oscar worthy movie.

The Nigerian Civil war is a fertile ground for great movies. A romeo and Juliet, the chronicle of a family trying to escape the war-zone, an action flick focusing on a spy etc

NYSC is also another fertile ground, a movie of some corpers trying to escape hot zone like boko haram, a lean on me-esque film which really is the plight of most corpers.

A superhero movie and it doesnt have to cost a lot of money, Heroes s1 had little in way of special effects. it just needs a good story

Fast and Furious set in Abuja - A pipe dream but admit it, this would be awesome.

and these are off the top of my head

I would like to see nollywood movies where actors/actresses take on unusual (different from their usual) characters that would require physical disquise and a change in posture and speech, such that one might be unable to recognise them

We are surely getting there.

I would advice that you get a clean 80leaves notebook and label it "My Ideas and Inspirations"... Keep it somewhere accessible but safe.. Once these stories enter ur head, you would just write it in the book and make it somewhat understandable while writing it in the book.. You would be surprised when you come back six months later and saw the things you wrote there. You won't beleive that such brilliant ideas crossed your mind..
And if care is not taken, you might see yourself writing some books, some poetry collections, or some plays.
Goodluck to you my dear
