We take a look at Sporting events that have taken place on this day the 23rd day of March, most notable on this day is the birthday of some Champions League winners, and Larry Holmes rumbled on this day in a certain year.

In 1962 William DeWitt bought the Cincinnati Reds a Major League Baseball team based in Cincinnati, Ohio for $4,625,000, ushering in the "Big Red Machine" dynasty of the 1970s.

Sergei Bubka set the pole vaults world record indoor at 6.12m, in the year 1991, he is currently the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Vice President a post he has served since 2007.

In the year 1979 Larry Holmes knocks out Osvaldo Ocasio in 7 rounds for the Heavyweight boxing title.
NBA guard (Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks), Jason Kidd was born on this day in the year 1973.

On this day, football greats and notable champions league winners were born, in 1968, Spain and Real Madrid captain Fernando Hierro was born, a very skillful and highly versatile defender, known especially for his set piece abilities, Nigerians would remember him for the free-kick he scored in the France 98' World Cup group game between both nations, the Super Eagles later went on to win 3-2 courtesy of a Sunday Oliseh thunderbolt.

Now for some tragic news, in 1987 Dean Paul Martin, pilot/musician/tennis pro died, he obtained his pilot's license at age 16 and became an officer in the California Air National Guard in 1981. He rose to the rank of captain. He died in 1987 when his Air National Guard F-4 Phantom jet fighter departed March Air Force Base and crashed in California's San Bernardino Mountains during a snowstorm, killing him and his Weapons Systems Officer, Captain Ramon Ortiz, at age 29.
