CAMPUS OPINION PRESS RELEASE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS
STUDENTS' UNION ELECTION: Education Students on top
of history. At about forty-eight hours to the general
election, the University of Lagos community witnessed a
massive turnout of student voters from various faculties
and departments yesterday, Thursday, 26th March, 2015,
to mark the rebirth of the deceased Students’ Union in
the university. The voting exercise which commenced
around 10am took place at the university sport centre
where eligible students got the floor to throw the weight
of their supports behind their choice candidates. The
various ULSU positions scrambled for include that of the
President, General Secretary, P.R.O, and Welfare. Three
candidates, Hassan Olamilekan Abiodun (Micro Biology),
Martins Abiodun A.(Science &Tech Education) and Oshin
Oluwagbenga olushola (Law) competed against each other
for the office of ULSA President with Abiodun emerging
as the lucky winner of the seat with 599 votes, thus
gave his opponents an inimitable defeat. Close to him, in
terms of votes secured, was Hassan Olamilekan who
received 330 votes while Oshin Oluwagbenga garnered 305
votes. For the post of ULSU General Secrectary, Babalola
Olufemi Paul (Est. Mgt) was the striker with 709 vote
shots while Ukpai John Raymond chose to be the goal
keeper but conceded lots of goals convertible to 512
votes, thereby making his opponent emerged the winner
of the contest. Also the battle for the post of the ULSU
P.R.O was hot but won gallantly by Adegunroye Olakunle
Charles (Science & Tech), one of the three mighty
contenders who received 492 votes, while Nwaokoro
Nzubechukwu Samuel came second as he struggled to
survive the heavy missiles of votes fired againt him but
to no avail cos he lost so much blood. The aspirant who
came third, Adeniran Adegboye Wasiri, was at the mercy
of the voters to receive 267 votes. Meanwhile, the last
post that was keenly contested for was the office of
ULSU welfare. The three aspirants who featured in the
contest for the seat were Olanisemi Oluwatobi
Emmanuel, the winner of the seat with 652 votes (social
science), Owolabi Oluwaseyi Babatunde, who got 414
votes (Chemistry) and Okolie Richard Nnamdi
(Philosophy), receiving159 votes. From all accounts, the
whole exercise was peaceful but the begging question is,
“will the university community continue to enjoy its
fortunes of tranquillity and freedom from campus war?”
Seen on the whatsapp page of educational administration
students of the university is a thought provoking post
which read thus: Heard Yaba Tech newly elected SUG
president was shot on his fore-head on Monday evening
right after election. Am afraid...Unilag SUG has been re-
instituted, grassroot politics begins, God-Fatherism
starts, cultism unleashed, radicality unleashed, violence
unleashed, students animality unleashed.....Hmmm chaos
is on its way to the door of every Unilag Students,
restlestness is approaching every Unilag's Business
ventures, students will no longer be able to move at will
on campus, Night reading will turn out to be every
students' worst fear. If not now, later it will manifest.
The deed has been done, SUG has been re-instituted. It
will only seem peaceful at the beginning but will later get
out of hands at the end. Well...not jst happy about that.
I belive students can always make a peaceful protest
without SUG, as we'v always been doing. I pray Unilag
continues to be peaceful as have always known it to be
during my academic stay. #godblessunilag
