Am planning to buy Audi A6 3.2v6 quattro with triptronic gear via Cotonu by may 2015.I will like to have insightful information about the car like:
1 Reliability
2 maintenance
3 major known faults
4 spares availability in Nigeria
5 .Good auto mechanic for Audi unit in Nigeria

Though I would have prefers A6 2.0tfsi,but it does come with dreaded multitronic tranny.

Personally, I would avoid the 3.2 FSI version.

FSI engines are efficient, but the intake manifold needs periodic removal to decoke. The fuel pressures are almost as high as that in a diesel, so working on the fuel system with little or no knowledge is a recipe for disaster.

The fuel pump is also mega money, as a regular A6 non-FSI will not work.

Also consider the timing chain. It's at the back of the engine, and requires engine and transmission removal, then separation on the bench to replace it. It's a 15-hour job, over here Audi quote £2700 parts and labour to replace it. I myself charge £1900.

Consider even the most basic parts for this job in Nigeria, and the available expertise to carry it out.

My advice would be to go with the 4.2 V8 non-FSI. There is the 2.4 V6 too, if you can find a Quattro model, it won't be Multitronic / CVT.

Good luck!

Siena, I am getting a 2001 Audi A6 2.4L V6 Tiptronic..(4B, C5)
What are your thoughts?

I would be wary of the transmission. The ZF5HP-24 is not the most reliable. It is worse with high-powered engines, like the 2.7T and 4.2 V8.

Failures are common on high-mileage cars, though some have died as early as 65,000 miles, while others have gone beyond the 300,000 mile mark without any issues.

The killer is dirty or low ATF oil. It should be replaced every 60,000 miles, and a new strainer fitted. It is also very important that the correct Audi ATF is used. There is NO substitute like DEXRON or Abro.

Another point is a car with over 100,000 miles on the odometer, that has never had an ATF change, it is best NOT to replace it. Dirty carbon deposits are dislodged, going where they'll do the most damage -

Valve body.

Replacing the ATF is a specialist procedure, that requires knowledge and the correct tools to accomplish. Get it wrong, and it'll all end in tears.

I would be more inclined to buy a manual variant, or go for a C6 Audi A6 2.4 Quattro Tiptronic. These are fitted with the much more robust ZF6HP transmission. A variant of his is fitted to the D3 Audi A8 and S8, and I have not come across any failures.

Yet.

Thanks Siena for ur timely response. I have already asked an agent to look out for the 3.2 v6,but will alert him for a change of plan.
The problem is the possibility of of getting an A6 2.4 v6 from cotonu will be small.I have made enquirers and is like we have more 2.4 multitronic than quattro. Secondly, the 4.2 v8 is kinda big for me.it will be a fuel guzzler. Please is their another A6 version you can recommend that has it timing in front for easy assessment?
Incase I happen to see A6 2.4, what are the possibility that I will get service parts here in Nigeria?
I love the A6 model
Thanks

When ever Siena speaks, I always feel as if I'm in a lecture hall. Siena you too much.

Since CHANGE is the trending thing in Nigeria now, I will soon change from Japanese to German machines, Mercedes in particular. When that time comes, Siena I believe you will also extend your hand of Lecturing to me.

Good day @siena please I need ur candid advice. I ve option of two cars at the moment but dunno which to pick between Audi A6 2002 and Toyota Solara 2005. Your professional advice considering maintenance, fuel consumption and peculiar faults, for an average earner would be appreciated.

Do you reside in Nigeria, hope you know the state of our :

1. roads
2. inavailability of part for this car.
3. No competent mechanics to fix this ride, i have alot of them parked in mechanic workshops all over the country.
4. You should have enough cash to import the parts to your location.

Why not go for a 2010 passat or Jetta less problems and worry.

Thanks everyone for ur insights and contributions. I have decided to go ahead to pick 2006 Audi A6 3.2Quattroo as against 2005 model. After a long research and enquiries, I have come to the conclusion that I can actually maintain the unit .My resolve is to make sure I diagnose the vehicle first to pinpoint the faults before I can allow a mechanic to touch it. From my research, this model shares underneath in common with C5 and I have already ordered for a vcds specific for VW,Audi while I wait for the ride to reach Naija.
Thanks all

Steer clear of Audi. Buy BMW or Merc instead if you're so addicted to German products.
