The government of Uganda and the Federal University of Technology, Akure have started a partnership on capacity development for urban planners in the East African country. According to a statement by the management of FUTA, a team led by the Under Secretary, Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Uganda, Mr. Emmanuel Olaunah, was at the Urban and Regional Planning Department FUTA for a weeklong mentorship and training programme. Olaunah was quoted as saying that as a sister African country, Uganda had realised that it had a lot of things in common with Nigeria. He added that if properly utilised and harnessed, the similarities would be beneficial to the two countries. Olaunah was quoted as saying, “Our country looks up to Nigeria as a big brother with lots of potential that we can tap into, especially in the area of urbanisation and capacity building. This informed this visit. Nigeria is more organised in urbanisation and we are here to learn from you to know the technicalities involved. “We want to benefit from your wealth of experience and we see your university as the place to garner the experience through your urban and regional planning department. We need your university to help us develop our urban capacity. “We want you to baptise us with your wealth of experience. We know you have what it takes to help us. We are sure that after learning from you, we can develop our country better.” The Vice-Chancellor, FUTA, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, said the institution had the best department of urban and regional panning among over 100 Nigerian universities.
