It's an exercise not an operation. If it were, there would have been significant mobilisation of forces.

BH is a spent force, the Nigerian army has successfully degraded BH capabilities. The group can still mobilise and mount attacks, however sparsely.

The issues in the Niger-Delta isn't particularly precarious, they've always been mainly political issues. Those guys arrested are mainly crude oil thieves.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE HELICOPTER ATTACKS NEW BOKO HARAM TERRORIST CAMP IN NORTHERN BORNO
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), during a night operation conducted yesterday, successfully destroyed a new Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) Camp located between Malam Fatori and Kangarwa in Northern Borno. The new camp is about 4-6km away from the BHT location attacked earlier on 20 August 2016 by NAF Mi-17 helicopter within the same vicinity in a similar night operation that led to the death of about 300 insurgents. The post-strike Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) mission had revealed that surviving BHTs converged at the new location. The information was later confirmed to be true by series of follow-up Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions that led to the latest strike. Recall that the general area around Malam Fatori and Kangarwa is infested with BHTs hence the need to clear the remnants of BHT in the area. The air assault is therefore expected to further degrade the capability of the insurgents while fostering the creation of the necessary enablement for own ground troops to operate.
Meanwhile, NAF Alpha Jets have helped to repel an attack by BHTs on troops of 153 Battalion who were on fighting patrol at Ala Lumshe. The troops, on Saturday 27 August 2016, had come under attack from BHTs about 4km south of Marte when the Alpha Jets were called-in to dislodge the insurgents.

Somalia Islamists al-Shabab 'driven out of Mogadishu'

African Union (AU) troops say they have driven Islamist al-Shabab militants out of their last stronghold in the north of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu.
"We control the whole of Mogadishu," AU Gen Fred Mugisha told the BBC. He said that Somali government forces also took part in the offensive.
One African Union soldier and eight civilians were killed in the fighting, reports say.
Al-Shabab still controls large swathes of south and central Somalia.
'Trap'
Gen Mugisha told the BBC: "[Transitional Federal Government of Somalia] forces, supported by Amisom (the African Union Mission in Somalia)
- we have managed to push out al-Shabab from Mogadishu main city. As I am talking to you, we control the whole of Mogadishu main city, yes."

Amisom spokesman Lt Col Paddy Ankunda said the objective had been to push the al-Shabab forces out of mortar range of civilians.
"The outer north and eastern fringes of the city must still be cleared, but key ground and buildings are no longer under the control of the extremists," he said.
A former pasta factory used by al-Shabab as an operations centre had been captured, he added.
Al-Shabab still has a presence in the outlying district of Daynile, a BBC reporter in Mogadishu says.
"It has been a big achievement to remove [al-Shabab] from the city, and put an end to the fighting that disrupted so many lives," said Lt Col Ankunda. "But the challenge is now to protect civilians from the sort of terror attack we saw last week."
Al-Shabab said it carried out a bomb attack last week which killed more than 80 people.
The al-Qaeda-linked group retreated from most of Mogadishu in August, following an offensive by Amisom, but analysts had predicted that without a front line, the organisation was likely to begin carrying out more bombings, including suicide attacks.
Al-Shabab said both the August pullout and Monday's loss of ground were tactical moves.
"Allowing the Amisom troops to come to the pasta factory was just a trap planned earlier so that they spread out their troops," an al-Shabab official told AFP news agency.
Somalia has been without an effective central government since 1991 - the weak transitional government and Islamist militias are competing for control of the country.

Five soldiers dead after al Shabaab attack outside Somali president's palace

A car bomb claimed by al Shabaab Islamist militants killed five soldiers outside the president's palace in the Somali capital of Mogadishu and badly damaged two nearby hotels, police said.

Reuters witnesses said gunfire could be heard after the explosion and a huge cloud of smoke could be seen above the president's palace, outside which were the remnants of the car and splattered blood.

"A suicide car bomb exploded outside the presidential palace. So far two hotels opposite the palace are partially destroyed," police officer Major Mohamed Ali told Reuters by phone.

Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for several recent explosions in Mogadishu, including a car bomb and gun attack last week at a popular beach restaurant in the capital that killed 10 people.

"So far we know five government soldiers died in the blast. It exploded outside the SYL hotel which is also just at the checkpoint outside the palace. We believe the target was SYL which is frequented by officials. The death toll may rise," police officer Colonel Abdikadir Hussein told Reuters.

Al Shabaab's Radio Andaluz said that the group was behind the attack.

In a separate incident, al Shabaab fighters attacked military bases housing government and African Union troops south west of the capital Mogadishu late on Monday, police and the group said on Tuesday.

Military officer Major Bile Farah said a soldier and two al Shabaab fighters were killed in the attack in K-50 and Muri in Lower Shabelle region,

Al Shabaab's military operations spokesman, Abdiasis Abu Musab, said the group's fighters had killed 10 soldiers and commandeered a vehicle from the Somali government soldiers.

The militants were pushed out of Mogadishu by the African Union peacekeeping force Amisom in 2011 but have remained a serious threat, launching frequent attacks aimed at overthrowing the government.

Seeking to impose its own harsh form of Islam, al Shabaab has also launched attacks in Kenya and Uganda which have contributed troops to the 22,000-strong Amisom force.

TROOPS CONDUCTS PATROLS AND RAIDS

Troops of 222 Battalion, 4 Brigade Nigerian Army involved in the field training exercise of Operation CROCODILE SMILE have also been conducting patrols and raids.

Today, the troops carried out patrols through Edje-Ewu-Opere waterside and Araya communities in Ughelli South and Isoko South Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Delta State.

As part of the training programme, the exercising unit would continue to dominate the general area with patrols and raids of reported or suspected hideouts of criminals. Reconnaissance is also ongoing to detect the site of economic sabotage on NPDC/shoreline pipeline along Ogor-Oteri swamps in Ughelli South and Ughelli North LGAs by some criminals.

Similarly, following intelligence report, a robust patrol team was despatched to raid suspected criminal hideouts at Ehweru community in Ughelli North LGA this morning. The team was able to track down and arrested hoodlums known for terrorising commuters plying the East-West road between Ughelli to Patani. The patrol team arrested 5 suspects which include Messrs Oruno Egbede, Atiyoyo Rewemuesere, Peter Kehinde, Wilson Godbless and Friday Odede. They also recovered1Locally made gun, 1 dagger and a cutlass from the suspects.

At about 3.45am earlier today, another patrol team of the unit raided house number 4, Temile Street off Egor road in Ughelli, which served as the residence of Mr. Gabriel Ogbudje (a supposedly ex-militant leader) and now leader of the Otugas Fire Force (a new militant group in the Niger Delta). Although still at large, he is suspected to be responsible for the recent acts of economic sabotage perpetrated at NPDC/shoreline major delivery trunk line within Ogor-oteri communities on 29th August 2016.

However, Messrs Vincent Ekeke and Henry Koko alongside Mrs. Racheal Abbah and Mrs. Amaratefa Odada found at the residence were invited for questioning, while efforts are ongoing to track down the wanted suspect.

The troops will continue to maintain vigilance, carry out raids and patrols as part of the training exercise in the general area as part of their routine activities to improve proficiency and professionalism.

Thank you for your usual and kind cooperation.

Boko Haram ready for peace, will announce Chibok girls' whereabouts in 24hours - Aisha Wakil

One of the trio declared wanted by the Nigerian Army for concealing information on the whereabouts of the Chibok girls, Aisha Alkali Wakil, has revealed that the Boko Haram terrorist group is now ready for peace.

According to her, the group may make a big announcement about the kidnapped Chibok school girls within the next 24 hours.

The lawyer with the National Human Rights Commission told the Nation that, “Since I came back, I have been on their neck.

“They have now agreed to come out and discuss with the government and bring back the girls.

“I am for the Chibok girls and all the captives. They are ready for peace. This is what they told me.

“I think they might post some information on YouTube within 24 hours,” Aisha stated.

This is coming barely one week after President Muhammadu Buhari said his government was ready to negotiate with genuine Boko Haram leaders  to release the missing school girls.

NAF spend N475m monthly to fuel jets & other aircraft.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) spends N475 million monthly to fuel its fighter jets and transport planes to fight Boko Haram.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, said in Lagos yesterday that the force uses 1.9 million litres of aviation fuel monthly to fly missions in the North-East, the hotbed of Boko Haram insurgency. Aviation fuel sells for N250 per litres, meaning that at least, N475 million is spent on a monthly basis.
He spoke during the opening of the 2016 Logistics seminar organsed by the NAF’s Logistics Command.
Giving other breakdown, he said: “So we are talking of about 10, 000 litres just for one aircraft time. We have so many other airplanes like the Alpha jets which consume 2, 400 litres per hour. They also fly in formation and that means about 4, 800 litres a day. There are other planes that fly on a daily basis.”
Air Marshal Abubakar said to ensure  the force build capacity in logistics planning, the hierarchy of the NAF has embarked on training and retraining of its personnel within and outside Nigeria, especially as logistics play a very vital role in the success or failure of military operations.
He said the NAF has consistently sought ways of standardising her logistics procedures and operations in line with current global best practices.
While explaining that the Air Force must put together a carefully planned strategy not only for the movement of equipment and personnel to the theatre of war, the NAF chief said this was important if the current security challenges  must be properly addressed.
He said: “It is only when we get the strategy right that we can hope to effectively and efficiently deploy air power necessary for addressing the challenges facing Nigeria. To support air operations in the North-East, the NAF must put an excellent plan that will ensure availability of aviation fuel in the operational area.
Earlier, the Federal Government said yesterday it will continue to support the military to end insurgency and militancy. Minister of Defence, Brig. Gen. Mansur Dan Ali (retd) said President Muhammadu Buhari is eager to end violent crimes.
He was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Defence Minstery, Amb. Danguma Sheni.
Meanwhile, the NAF said yesterday its fighter jets have destroyed a new Boko Haram camp in Borno State. The camp, located between Malam Fatori and Kangarwa in northern part of the state, is about six kilometres from the location of another facility attacked on August 20 by fighter jets, killing over 300 insurgents.
A statement by the Director Public Relations and Information, Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa, said the post-strike Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) mission conducted by the Air Force had revealed that some surviving Boko Haram members had converged at the new location, prompting the latest strike.
Famuyiwa said the air assault will further “degrade the capability of the insurgents while fostering the creation of the necessary enablement for ground troops to operate”.
Meanwhile, the #BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) campaign group has accused President Buhari of allowing members of the Boko Haram terrorists to determine the release of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls.
This is even as police again yesterday barred the BBOG from gaining access into the Presidential Villa, Abuja to seek audience with Buhari.
The group, which is continuing with its 14 days strategic engagement, criticised the President for his statement at the just-concluded sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI), in Kenya, where he suggested his willingness to swap the girls for Boko Haram detainees.
The group also condemned the President’s call on the terrorists to engage an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) if they so wish.
Coordinator of the BBOG, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, who made this known during a peaceful march by the group to the Villa in Abuja yesterday, wondered why the President was giving so much powers to the terrorists who have continued to wreak havoc in some parts of the country to determine the fate of the girls.
She said: “We fail to understand why our Federal Government is giving so much powers to determine the process and first mover actions to the terrorists.
According to her, “Mr. President suggested a willingness to swap our girls for Boko Haram fighters preferring that the terrorists engage an international Non-Governmental Organization in the intermediation process if they so wish.
His words as reported were, “If they [the terrorists] do not want to talk to us directly, let them pick an internationally recognized Non-Governmental Organisation, convince them that they are holding the girls and that they want Nigeria to release a number of Boko Haram leaders in detention, which they are supposed to know.”.
She commended the courage and gallantry of the military in the frontline, the Multinational Joint Task Force, and the Civilian JTF, for their bravery, urging them to remain resilient.

The North East's, has raged for over 3 years.
The monthly expenses on aviation fuel alone is enough to do quite a haul of infrastructural projects.
Then losses as hardware is another...

The worst is the loss of personnel. The investment in training and their experiences means that somewhere along the line, we would have to seek knowledge again, sometimes at great costs from foreigners.

You guys should quite all the sentiments. This is simply the cost of war. Armies are set up not for us to post photos of them online posing, but to fight battles and win wars. The loss of personnel not withstanding, it is bound to happen.

Better now than never. Islamic terrorism was bound to reach Nigeria whether we approved of it or not, neither would the sparing the life of the murderous Mohammed Yusuf have change our current trajectory.

War was always going to come to us. Luckily we have a strong, equipped and experienced military by African standards to tackle this problem.

Not exactly sentiments especially for a country whose finances can be used to greater effect. Having a well equipped army does not mean you should sit easy and wait for the next miscreant to awaken and start trouble.

I disagree with your 'sentiment' about war would always come to us...
That's like implying a fight, destroy, rebuild in a repeated order.
We are back in the ND fighting similar issues successive governments fought against.

Some battles however need to be fought out, no doubt. Especially with the irredeemable terrorists.

I'm implying battles should be picked nipped wisely and not waiting for another to come from around the corner because you can fight them.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE AIRCRAFT ATTACKED BOKO HARAM LEADERSHIP LOCATION AT TUMBUN REGO IN NORTHERN BORNO
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), in a series of another well-coordinated air operations conducted on 29 August 2016, successfully attacked a Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) camp at Tumbun Rego in Northern Borno where some wounded commanders of the notorious sect were believed to be receiving treatment. Intelligence report has it that some BHT commanders, who survived the air assault on the night of 20 August 2016 leading to the death of over 300 insurgents, had sustained serious injuries and were said to have relocated subsequently to the Camp at Tumbun Rego for medical treatment. The latest strike followed the trail of this piece of intelligence to neutralise these suspected leaders of the sect who are high value targets. While the NAF is yet to ascertain the casualty figure, post-strike Battle Damage Assessment mission shows that the degree of damage achieved was devastating as the buildings were engulfed by large fire as can be seen from the declassified video of the air operation.
