In total both operational and non operational C130H should be 8. Lost one in 1992, the total should have being 9.

Come on man........... Saudis always have Gucci gear. However what's the essence of a Gucci gear if you're going to use a Sniper rifle for close protection duties.
I guess they bought too many of the rifle or they did not brief him on the detail of the job so he showed up overdressed with a sniper rifle. The best thing a nation can do for Her infantry men who would eventually lay down their lives for the nation is to Gear them up completely with the basics. From helmet to knee cap to comm. To me I think it is treasonous to steal even a kobo meant for equipping this wonderful selfless people.

You can't guess. It is what it is..... Poor training or execution of missions by Arabs, especially over-pampered Saudis. Arabs simply can't fight, that photo is a perfect example.

It is a close protection mission for Hadi ( the Yemeni president), you don't pick up Sniper rifles for close protection duties. It's just like seeing one of the DSS agents (close protection detail) guarding President Buhari with a sniper rifle...... It's completely insane.

Unlike Nigeria, Saudi-Arabia has only one type of topography... Desert!! So it is easy to standardize.

The Saudi defence budget is $20 billion, we (Nigeria) cannot compete with that.

NAF to Produce Locally-Made Spares

Nigerian Air Force has intensified research and development efforts to produce locally-made spares and other related equipment in a bid to address the challenges associated with spares procurement from third party countries.
This is a follow-up to the Research and Development Seminar held in Kaduna recently and in line with the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) vision to ‘reposition the Nigerian Air Force into a highly professional and disciplined force through capacity building initiatives for effective, efficient and timely employment of air power in response to Nigeria’s national security imperatives.
The CAS, Air Marshal SB Abubakar, in a bold move towards achieving this objective set up both research and implementation committees comprising 3 professors and NAF officers in partnership with 28 indigenous universities. The committees which only recently submitted a combined interim report were grouped into nondestructive testing team, security monitoring system and autopilot cassette team.
Air Marshal Abubakar who expressed optimism while receiving the interim report stated that the NAF was at the verge of breaking even at producing locally made spares for maintenance of its aircraft.
According to him, the research outcomes of the committees will save the country enormous resources in hard currency and the time lag experienced in purchasing spare and military hardware from other countries. He urged the committees to intensify their efforts and pledged to provide the much needed support and enabling environment for them to succeed. Furthermore, the Air Chief used the occasion to also introduced inter-command Research and Development competition amongst all NAF Units.
Earlier, while presenting the interim report, the leader of the team, Air Vice Marshal Kayode Beckley stated that various experiments were currently on-going at different NAF units with the overall aim of using local content to address the issue of maintenance and procurement of spares.
In view of the above, you are please requested to air/publish this information in your mass medium for the awareness of the general public. Thank you for your usual support and cooperation, Air Commodore Dele Alonge said in a statement on Monday.

Three Kenyan soldiers wounded in blast claimed by al Shabaab

NAIROBI (Reuters) – Three Kenyan soldiers were wounded, one of them critically, when their vehicle was hit in eastern Kenya by a roadside bomb that the Somali Islamist al Shabaab group said it had planted.

The blast in Hulugho, Garissa County, which lies next to the Somali border, shows the group still has the ability to stage attacks outside Somalia even though the rebels have been driven out of major strongholds inside the Horn of Africa nation.

Kenya is part of an African Union force that has been battling the Islamist rebels. Al Shabaab has often staged attacks in Kenya and has said it will continue to launch strikes until Kenyan forces leave Somalia.

“Three soldiers were injured. One was critical, but (they) were evacuated for medical attention,” Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) spokesman, Colonel David Obonyo, told Reuters in a brief message, adding the blast was caused by an improvised explosive devices, or IED.

Earlier, al Shabaab had claimed responsibility for the attack and said all those in the vehicle had died. “We destroyed a KDF military vehicle and destroyed all on board,” Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab’s military operation spokesman, told Reuters.

Al Shabaab’s attacks in Kenya have include a raid by gunmen on the upscale Westgate shopping mall in 2013 and a university in Garissa this year. Hundreds of people have been killed in al Shabaab attacks in the past two years.

WHY THE ARMED FORCES FAIL AT COIN

In my previous posting I listed the reasons why I believe governments fail at COIN. Most insurgencies start either as a result of a perceived lack of – or poor - governance or to resist an invader when the government and the armed forces have been overrun.

Governments, despite often being the prime reason why an insurgency starts, are often only too keen to make the armed forces responsible for establishing workable governance in areas that have become positively disposed towards the insurgency.

As it is an internal problem, countering the insurgency is essentially a law enforcement responsibility. The problem is that often the law enforcement agencies do not realise that an insurgency is developing and through ignorance and denial, mislead government – and the nation - on the seriousness of the situation. This provides the insurgents with numerous advantages, most crucial being time to organise, train and escalate the insurgency.

The end goal of the insurgency is political in nature and therefore, the main effort aimed at countering it ought to be political and not militarily. This “passing the buck” approach places the armed forces in a position they can seldom if ever win as the military’s role is not to govern but to ensure an environment in which governance can take place.

An insurgency is neither a strategy nor a war. It is a condition based on the perception(s) of a part of the populace that poor governance exists, that government only governs for its own benefit and that they – the populace - are being marginalised or politically suppressed. In reality, an insurgency is an internal emergency that, left unchecked, can develop into a civil war. The insurgency itself is a means to an end and it is an approach aimed at either weakening or collapsing a government’s control and forcing a negotiation in the favour of the insurgents.

The role of the armed forces, once it has been mandated by government to take control when the law enforcement agencies are unable to contain the insurgency, is to create an environment that will allow government to negotiate from a position of strength – and govern. To achieve this, the armed forces must destroy the armed elements of the insurgency and “out-guerrilla the guerrillas”.

The armed forces can, despite their relative strengths in terms of manpower, firepower and other resources, fail at effectively neutralising and destroying an insurgency. There are many reasons for this failure but not all of the reasons can be laid before the door of the armed forces.

Intelligence failures, poor strategies and a lack of training, equipment and preparation as well as a lack of understanding of the Operating Environment (OE) are major contributing factors. So too are attempts at utilising conventional TTPs to fight an unconventional enemy. Being unable to apply relentless pursuit and locate and destroy the insurgents with ruthless aggression add to the reasons for failure.

However, all the firepower in the world will not end or contain the insurgency if government fails at its responsibilities. The armed forces cannot build national cohesion nor can they be expected to govern in the absence of government.

I suspect that what I was taught many years ago still holds true; countering an insurgency requires an 80% effort by government and a 20% effort by the armed forces. However, in executing their 20% responsibility, the armed forces must give 100% of their effort to succeed in creating the climate government requires to fulfil its duties. This climate is characterised by safety and security.

In the execution of their mission, the armed forces must continuously guard against:

1.    Unnecessary collateral damage – this will alienate the populace towards them
2.    Disrespect and maltreatment of the populace
3.    A lack of operational flexibility
4.    Imposing unnecessary restraints on the troops
5.    Believing the enemy to be inferior
Inability to adapt
6.    Poor discipline
7.    Routine
Foreign interference
8.    Neglecting the principles of COIN.

Misleading, emotional mainstream and social media in favour of the insurgency can weaken the national resolve and demotivate the armed forces.  Furthermore, this type of reporting will give credibility to the insurgents and add impetus to the insurgency.

It is furthermore crucial that the armed forces know when to stop and when government must take over and govern and the law enforcement agencies enforce the law.

French government seeks Nigeria’s assistance in terrorism war

Following recent terrorists’ attacks in Paris which killed over 130 persons, the French Director of Military Intelligence, General Christopher Gormert, today paid an official visit to the Nigerian Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), seeking knowledge on how Nigerian security agencies are currently confronting the Boko Haram terrorist group.

According to Gen. Gormert , “In the area of geo-spatial intelligence, we will seriously rely on you to help us develop that capacity. We are in the process of setting up that department. It’s‎ my first time in Abuja and it’s a good reason to visit you on Boko Haram and see how we can share intelligence; that is the reason for my visit.”

He stated further that, “I believe in building up capacity we must leverage on our capable partners like you to help us from the level which we were, to a higher level.

“Like you know this phenomenon of global terrorism is catching all nations napping. It’s something we did not prepare ‎for including developing countries like Nigeria. We have to evolve new ways of tackling them and stamp them out of existence”.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s CDI, Air Vice Marshal Monday Riku Morgan had expressed “sympathy with the entire community of France, and particularly the people of Paris, for the mischievous attack carried out ‎by the terrorists on their city.”

“As a nation, we understand the feelings that you are going through right now, because we have the same nuisance in our hands,” he said.

He recalled the visit of President Buhari to France early this year, which he said ‘’ brought about the serious synergy that both security organizations have today, between the French government and Nigeria in terms of intelligence sharing”.

“I want to assure you that your visit is highly plausible. I recall that during a visit to Senegal with the Chief of Defence Staff, we spoke on very serious bilateral issues on the need to encourage our Francophone brother nations to give us the neccesary support to defeat Boko Haram.

“We think that henceforth, such daily intelligence sharing will keep happening and this will effectively change the situation in the north east,” AVM Morgan said.

“Boko Haram controls only ‘one’ local government” – Borno Speaker

Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, has revealed that Islamic terrorists sect, Boko Haram, is in control of only one local government in the state.

Lawan disclosed that the Nigerian Army has liberated 19 out of the 20 local government areas previously occupied by the deadly insurgents.

Speaking at the Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly on Thursday, the Speaker said the Nigeria military is presently displaying a level of commitment that’s never been experienced.

“As of now, only one local government is yet to be liberated from the clutch of the Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State. That’s the Abadam, located along border town of Niger Republic.”

“Nineteen local governments are now in control of the military. And the people are gradually returning to their homes in the affected areas. Military is very serious in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency. We never experienced the kind of commitment from military before.”

“They have driven the Boko Haram to the bush. I am sure the military is equal to the task and will meet the time line of December 2015 to rout the insurgents by December. The Chief of Army Staff is leading the military.

“Various local governments captured by Boko Haram have been recaptured with the federal troops stationed there as they proceed to other local governments. So, now only Abadam local government is not liberated. I am sure they are going to liberate every local government in the state.”

“Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states have suffered so much due to this security challenge in the last six years. Now, we are gradually getting relative peace. So, I advise the people in all these areas to support the military.”

Boko Haram: 35 Decomposed Bodies Retrieved From Borno Town

Not fewer than 35 decomposed bodies have been recovered and buried in Borno town four months after it was liberated from Boko Haram insurgents.‎

Bama Local Government chairman,  Alhaji Ali Gujja, who led a team of rehabilitation workers to the town,  said on Thursday that more than 35 decomposed bodies were evacuated from many houses destroyed by Boko Haram.

Nigerian troops assisting rescued civilians
"We've evacuated more than 35  decomposed bodies in Bama in the course of our clearing exercise since the state government has given a matching order for us to clean the ruins of the town so that rehabilitation and reconstruction can start in earnest,'' Gujja told journalists.

Also, the Borno state government says it will collaborate with the Federal Government to rebuild the towns and villages destroyed by insurgents.

It would be recalled that SaharaReporters had reported earlier this year that decomposed bodies litter  Bama town.

Bama is the second largest city in  Borno State some 60 kilometers to state capital Maiduguri.

Nigeria troops liberated it April from Boko Haram after it was overrun by the militants on  September  1st, 2014. Boko Haram militants used it as a base, installed an "Amir" and later committed atrocities against trapped civilians during their seven months reign in Bama.
