Al-Shabaab gunmen attack beach-side restaurant in Mogadishu

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPaWo3RvoG8

Suspected al-Shabaab gunmen have attacked a popular beach in the Somali capital Mogadishu, opening fire at a restaurant and taking a number of hostages, witnesses and officials say. There are reports of casualties. (more)

The incident began just after 7 p.m. when heavy gunfire and at least one explosion were heard coming from the Lido beach area. The attack appeared to focus on the Liido Seafood Restaurant, which is close to the Beach View Cafe and a hotel. Police and ambulances are at the scene.

Somali police official Mohamed Hussein told the Associated Press that a suicide car bomber had rammed the gates of the Liido Seafood Restaurant after which gunmen stormed the building, taking a number of hostages. It is unclear how many people were at the restaurant, but customers usually sit in front of the building.

A journalist, speaking on condition anonymity, told the Voice of America by phone that he and more than 20 other people were trapped inside the restaurant. "I can see two dead bodies and four injured people lying on the floor of the restaurant," he was quoted as saying. "The main explosion occurred at the front door. I cannot tell the casualty outside."

Somalia's intelligence and security agency NISA said the "barbaric attack" was carried out by al-Shabaab militants who targeted a wedding and newly-graduated university students. "NISA is now controlling the situation and cleaning the remaining of the terrorists," NISA said.

Several explosions and heavy gunfire was heard throughout the evening, and the attack was ongoing by 10:30 p.m. local time, but authorities said a number of people had been rescued from the restaurant, including the commissioner of Karaan district. It added that one attacker, described as the group's leader, had been captured alive.

Journalist Mohamed Moalimuu, who previously worked as a correspondent for the BBC, was among those injured in the attack and was rushed to Darul-Shifa Hospital, according to freelance journalist Hussien Mohamed, who tweeted pictures of Moalimuu in hospital.

Somali Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke and the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) were among those who quickly condemned the attack. "I unreservedly condemn the barbaric attack at Liido. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims," the prime minister said.

I can only imagine the sponsors of BH viewing these pics and saying to themselves "Well, at least they got paid, unfortunately their service and devotion is no longer required". Every rebellion is a secret conspiracy carried out by powerful, untouchable individuals or nations with strong intentions to tip an unfavourable balance. Take out the latter factors and what you are left with is a people in a race for survival.
Its a pity BH would only pass for another deadly national conspiracy in the history of our dear country. I strongly feel nigerians deserve to know those behind BH sponsorship.

Denel partners with VR Laser to form Denel Asia

State-owned defence industry conglomerate Denel is extending its footprint in the Asia/Pacific region with the establishment of a joint venture company in Hong Kong.
Denel Asia is a partnership between Denel and VR Laser, a company with 20 years of experience in South Africa’s defence and defence technology sectors, according to a Denel statement.

According to Zwelakhe Ntshepe, Denel acting chief executive, opportunities are opening up in Asian countries where defence budgets are increasing.

“This is an important region for Denel to expand its business and find new markets for our products, especially in the artillery, armoured vehicle, missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fields,” he said.

Research shows nations in the Asia/pacific region will be responsible for more than half of defence procurement outside the United States by 2018.

“We need a foothold in the region and the establishment of Denel Asia with headquarters in Hong Kong will give us a strong presence and the ability to pursue opportunities,” he said.

India, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Vietnam and the Philippines – countries that, according to Denel, have all announced intentions of new defence acquisitions - will be on the receiving end of Denel Asia’s marketing attention.

VR Laser chief executive Peter van der Merwe is on record as saying he welcomes the opportunity to work with Denel and make inroads into a new regional market.

“Denel is a trusted name in the defence sector globally as one of the top 100 defence industry companies. VR Laser has expertise in defence technology and an understanding of defence markets in south-east Asia,” he said.

The partnership gives Denel access to VR Laser’s capabilities in fabrication, production and support of armoured vehicles. This will be combined with that of Denel to improve strengths in both design and systems integration of armoured vehicles.

Stephan Burger, divisional chief executive of Denel Land Systems (DLS) said the Asia-Pacific market was a key region for Denel to market products and grow its order book. Denel Land Systems is supplying billions of rands worth of turrets for Malaysia’s armoured vehicles while Denel Dynamics is supplying missiles to the country.

Joint ventures where partners have the ability to penetrate new markets are seen as a vital component of continued success for Denel. A similar joint venture with the Tawazun Group in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) saw Tawazun Dynamics brought into being. This UAE-based company manufactures Al Tariq strap-on bomb kits for international clients.

Ntshepe said Denel Asia was “a bold step” for the South African government owned defence company
