What is the logic behind not staging fixed wing fighter aircraft's in the south?

Is it lack of forseeable threats from the south
Or
Not enough airframes

The Air Force base in Port-harcourt used to house fighter jets, still holds the infrastructure to house fighter jets.

It was turned into a purely Helicopter base when the air force began to lose capability of it's fighter jets. it was assessed that with the dwindling number of operational jets, tough decisions had to be made.

When we finally order the JF-17 insignificant numbers, units would be spread across each geopolitical zone.

EXCLUSIVE: Buratai’s full control of Army pruned as CDS takes over Boko Haram war

There is disquiet in the nation’s Army following recent changes in strategies in the battle to flush out the dreaded Boko Haram terrorists.

Consequently, the Boko Haram war in the Northeast, hitherto under the supervision of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Maj.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, is now being led by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Maj.-Gen. Abayomi Olonishakin.

The finding follows days of investigation by DAILY POST on the seeming resurgence of Boko Haram, after the group’s inability to carry out major attacks towards the end of last year.

It was gathered that the recent shake-up in the Theater Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, was part of moves by the Military to confirm that the Defence Headquarters was now in charge of all operations.

Between the end of December and January, Major General Yushau Abubakar, former Operation Commander, was redeployed. He is now Chief of Training and Operation at the Nigerian Army Headquarters.

Major General Hassan Umaru, his replacement, now heads the Theatre. He was the General Officer Commanding, 3 Division of the Nigerian Army.

Deputy Theatre Commander is Major General Lucky Irabor.

Also, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Major General Lamidi Adeosun, was replaced with Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu.

Adeosun was sent to Multinational Joint TaskForce (MNJTF) with headquarters in Chad.

Similarly, former Air Force spokesman, Air Commodore Dele Alonge, was moved to the Defence Headquarters as Theatre Information Officer.

The Military said his appointment was “part of the recent efforts by the military leadership to restructure the Northeast campaign in order to effectively counter the Boko Haram insurgents and enhance the success of Operation Lafiya Dole.”

While the changes were still being debated, the Boko Haram sect struck at Dalori, 6km from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Saturday January 30.

The incident, which led to the killing of over 100 villagers and widely reported in local and international media, has done some damage to the Nigerian government which had claimed partial victory over Boko Haram.

Curious as to why Buratai, in his position as Army Chief, was yet to visit the scene of the carnage in spite of visits by a federal government delegation and the new Theatre head, DAILY POST contacted military sources for insight.

Our correspondent was informed that indeed, the Boko Haram operation has been transferred to the CDS.

“Mr. Buratai usually visits attacked communities. Instances are Geidam, Madagali, among others. He visits within 24 hours with warnings and words of encouragement to troops,” a source said.

But Buratai has stopped such, DAILY POST can authoritatively report.

Investigation shows that Buratai stayed away after recent attacks in Chibok, Wanori and Dalori, while it also appears that the change in command and control of troops has started taking toll on operations.

“Soldiers in battle front believe the development came at a wrong time. We used to have daily raids against Boko Haram,” said another source.

“They are now relaxed because everyone is waiting for the new plan directly from CDS’ office. We hope politics is not coming into play over management of operations.

“The war on Boko Haram should be from Maiduguri, not Abuja. We must not allow room for lapses. Many of the troops are not happy about the restructure and this is the truth.

“Being the ground troops and doing the bulk of the work, they want the COAS, whether Buratai or not, to be in command not CDS.

“In the past, operations directly under Defence were full of issues; go back to history. We only had some relief during the tenure of Ihejirika and now Buratai.

“Honestly, the recent upsurge in Boko Haram attacks is an indication Nigeria is moving back to square one and the fact that the terrorists all escaped after Dalori massacre shows we are in trouble.”

Phone calls to Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar, Friday night and Saturday morning were not answered. He also did not reply text message seeking his response.

Al-Shabaab militants retake Somali port

Al-Shabaab militants have retaken a key coastal stronghold in Somalia, underlining the resilience of the extremist group.

Fighters retook the port of Merka on Friday from African Union troops who had held the town since 2012. The loss of Merka, 60 miles south of the capital, Mogadishu, is one of the most significant reverses for the multinational AU force in its nearly decade-long battle against al-Shabaab.

The AU had captured the historic port in August 2012 as it pushed the militants out of a series of towns in Somalia. There was no immediate explanation for why Merka appears to have been given up.

“The AU troops pulled out of the town and al-Shabaab militants entered and have secured control without fighting,” said Ibrahim Adam, governor of the Lower Shabelle region.

Control of Merka gives al-Shabaab access to a port again. This will provide a financial boost to the organisation, allowing both taxation of local commerce and facilitating a wide range of lucrative smuggling activities.

“It’s symbolically important because it was one of the major towns retaken from al-Shabaab and underlines the resilience and longevity of the group,” said Ahmed Soliman, a regional analyst at Chatham House in London.

There was no immediate response from the AU force, known by its acronym Amisom, or government officials.

The seizure of Merka, as well as a series of high-profile al-Shabaab attacks on AU bases, indicates a new offensive spirit and capacity. The insurgents have lost ground in their campaign to overthrow the internationally backed government in Mogadishu since withdrawing from the city in 2011.

Soliman said: “Al-Shabaab has the ability to absorb losing control of key towns and have consistently been able to regroup in rural areas as well as strike in urban areas.”

Locals confirmed the takeover of Merka, saying heavily armed fighters had swept into the town with black Islamist flags before addressing residents.

“Amisom forces moved out at midday and the local administration and all other Somali security forces left a few minutes later – and then heavily armed al-Shabaab militants entered the town,” Ibrahim Mumin told the Agence France-Presse news agency. “They have been addressing residents at the district headquarters.”

International forces have suffered a series of setbacks in Somalia in recent weeks. Al-Shabaab fighters over-ran a base in the south-west manned by Kenyan troops. The extremists subsequently claimed to have killed 100 and captured more. Kenyan authorities have refused to comment on any losses.

Investigators are continuing to assess a blast on a commercial airliner that ripped a hole in its fuselage 15 minutes after take-off from Mogadishu on Tuesday.

One passenger was killed, apparently sucked out through the ragged hole ripped in the metal, which the pilot and experts suspect was caused by a bomb.

Al-Shabaab have not yet claimed responsibility for the attack and Somalia’s transport minister, Ali Jama Jangeli, has called on people to await the results of the investigation.

Last month at an AU summit, Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta, called for more “resources for the forces in Somalia so that Amisom can have robust power on land, air and the sea.”

More than 20,000 AU troops are deployed in the country. However, they have been hampered by a lack of air power, including attack helicopters, leaving their bases often isolated and supply lines vulnerable to attack.

On Friday in Mogadishu a car bomb exploded, killing three people. An airport official who appeared to have been the target escaped unharmed.

Unpatrotic Elements Aids Terrorists, As Soldiers Arrested with Unauthorised Military Items

It has come to the knowledge of the Nigerian Army that while concerted efforts are being made to finally clear all remnants of Boko Haram terrorists in the North East in particular and the country generally, some unscrupulous elements in the society have been thwarting that effort for pecuniary gains. They engage in all manners of illegal commercial activities such as trading and smuggling especially during late hours, all aimed at sustaining terrorism and insurgency. This is more prevalent in some towns and villages within the North East especially in Borno and Yobe States. The unpatriotic and selfish elements have clandestinely been aiding the terrorists with logistics and other supplies, through smuggling and other forms of illicit trading, thus sustaining them, while the merchants of death make money out of it.

Consequently, the Nigerian military and indeed the Nigerian Army is highly concerned with these unpatriotic acts. The Nigerian Army is therefore taking some drastic steps to curtail this illicit trading with the terrorists. From now on, some markets identified to be engaging in this illegal trade with the adversary in Borno and Yobe States will be closed. Any breach of that would be dealt with accordingly. The General Officers Commanding and other commanders have been directed accordingly. We implore for public’s kind support and understanding as we take these drastic measures to enable us decisively deal with the terrorists and saboteurs.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Nigerian Army has been recording tremendous successes in the fight against terrorists and insurgency as follows:

Troops of 7 Brigade Quick Reaction Force (QRF), Multinational Joint Task Force, yesterday inflicted casualties on Boko Haram terrorists, thus causing a major setback to the insurgents. This feat was achieved when the troops staged an ambush against the terrorists at Kekeno, Kukawa Local Government Area. During the operation, the gallant troops killed 5 suspected Boko Haram terrorists, recovered one Toyota Buffalo vehicle, 3 AK-47 rifles, 2 knives, a horse and other locally fabricated weapons. The insurgents were believed to be on a retaliatory mission following the killing of a suspected Boko Haram Ameer during an ambush by our troops at Kekeno.

In another development, troops of 118 Task Force Battalion patrolling Mile 90-Kekeno general area, have killed one suspected Boko Haram terrorist and captured 2 other insurgents. Similarly, troops of Army Headquarters Special Forces on patrol to Yale came across Boko Haram terrorists camp at Bulagana, cleared the camp and rescued 40 civilians held hostage. Unfortunately, 1 soldier sustained gunshot wounds during the operation. He has since been evacuated and is responding to treatment.

In the same vein, 151 Task Force Battalion of 21 Brigade while on patrol encountered Boko Haram terrorists at Budumri village during which they killed 25 Boko Haram terrorists and arrested 8 other terrorists. The troops also rescued 103 civilians held hostage by the terrorists. They also recovered 1 Golf car and quite a number of motorcycles and bicycles. The troops also cleared terrorists camp at Bolungu village. The same unit also rescued 181 persons and captured 8 Boko Haram terrorists. Among those rescued, were 18 men, 90 women and 77 children. The screening and profiling of those rescued is ongoing before their movement to IDP camps, while those arrested are being interrogated.

Unfortunately, despite these successes, a crop of black sheep amongst us are bend on tarnishing the image of the Nigerian Army. Last Sunday 7th February 2016, two of our Explosive Ordinance Device personnel attached to 143 Battalion, 13NA/ 70/10183 Sapper Eric Nwokorie and 13NA/70/10263 Sapper Macauley Fortune were arrested at Yola park with the following unauthorised military items: 1 Smoke grenade, 2,136 live rounds of 7.62 (Special) ammunition, 50 live rounds of 7.6mm (NATO) ammunition, 5 magazines of AK 47 rifles, 2 Browning Machine Gun live rounds of ammunitions. Others include, 1 Axe, 1 Cutlass, 1 Jack knife, 9 Jungle hats, 11 pairs of Camouflage (9 Desert and 3 woodland green), 4 Military Pullovers, 1 Black beret, 1 Green beret, 1 Pair of number 7 dress, 2 General Duty belt, 12 Army T-shirts, 2 Rain Coats, 2 Water bottles, 1 Pairs of Rain boot and 5 Pairs of Desert boots.

This unfortunate incident notwithstanding, troops morale remains high as they continue to dominate the general area with aggressive raids, ambushes and patrols to clear the remnants of the terrorists hibernating in the area.

The attention of the Nigerian Army has also been drawn to a set of 250 protesting dismissed soldiers in Nigerian Union of journalists (NUJ) Secretariat, Kaduna pleading through the media to be reabsorbed back again into the Nigerian Army.

The protesting soldiers were those soldiers dismissed last week by the Nigerian Army over gross acts of indiscipline, cowardice and absence without leave. They were part of the 2,023 dismissed soldiers last year that were earlier reinstated back into the Service by the present Chief of Army Staff. However these set of soldiers (the 205) absconded for more than one week when they were told that they were to move to North East on the 6th of January 2016. They started coming back when they realised that others were moved to units other than the theatre of operations in the North East. Please note that all efforts were made to make all the reinstated soldiers comfortable and integrate them back into the system. The protesting soldiers are the few who are recalcitrant to military duties and discipline. They are simply not interested in army job but want to earn salary. No one should listen to them as they are not patriotic at all.

It should be noted that the Nigerian Army has been tolerant and patient with their acts of indiscipline and unprofessional conduct. This was based on the understanding of their circumstances and conditions. Efforts have been made to retrain them, integrate and give them sense of belonging. However the attitude of some of them has left so much to be desired and would not be tolerated anymore hence their dismissal from Service. The Nigerian Army thrives on discipline, loyalty and good conduct and if anyone could not measure up to expectation or live by those tenets, he would not be allowed to remain in the system.
Kindly disseminate this information to the public through your medium.

Innoson Nigeria Produces Local Parts for Fighter Jets- NAF
Posted by Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa">Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa on February 10, 2016
NAF_Boss_Air_Marshall_S_B_abubakar_presenting_souvenir_to_the_chairman_innoson_motors_mr__innocent_chuwkumaThe Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar has lauded the management of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) Company for providing the needed technical support that has enabled the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to sustain its operations against the Boko Haram insurgents. The Company, at a time when the NAF would have been forced to ground its entire fleet of Alpha Jets due to lack of brake assembly, had helped to locally modify and overhaul the brake assembly of the MB-339 aircraft for adoption on the Alpha Jets. This ingenious effort by IVM is instrumental to the continued operation of the Alpha Jets, and had helped to save the day when help was not forthcoming from abroad. Air Mshl Abubakar stated that the contribution by IVM deserves national recognition and award, given the important role played by the Alpha Jet in the ongoing counter insurgency operations in North East Nigeria.
The collaboration between the NAF and IVM is in line with one of the key drivers of the CAS vision which is “strategic partnership with ministries, departments and agencies for enhanced research and development”. Beyond the feat, the NAF is poised to exploit the possibilities of mass producing the Alpha Jet break assembly and other parts locally by partnering with IVM, as well as other credible organisations, to build own capacity for enhanced self-reliance. The invitation of IVM team to Headquarters Nigerian Air Force for further discussions was based on this premise.
The CAS, while receiving the Chairman IVM, Mr Innocent Chukwuma and team members in his office, expressed the willingness by the NAF to expand the scope of existing research and development collaboration with IVM. “Our partnership with IVM would not end with the Alpha jet break assembly but a leeway to forge new frontiers, through research and development, to replicate some of the spares needed by our platforms” the CAS said. Air Mshl Abubakar stated that the feat has not only saved the country huge foreign exchange that otherwise would have been spent abroad but also adding value to Nigerians through provision of job opportunities.
Meanwhile, the Chairman IVM has expressed the readiness of his company to partner with the NAF to help manufacture locally some of the spares needed to keep its aircraft operational. Mr Innocent Chukwuma noted that such synergy as existing between the NAF and IVM would help to reduce the dependence on foreign technologies while promoting self-reliance, as well as technological and economic development. He disclosed that his company has the expertise to locally manufacture and assemble a number of automobile products that would be of benefit to the NAF.
You are please requested to kindly use your mass media to disseminate this information for the awareness of the general public. Thanks for your usual support and cooperation.
