PRESS RELEASE:
DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS ESTABLISHES CAMP FOR REPENTANT BOKO HARAM MEMBERS

In line with the Federal Government’s commitment to the war against insurgency in the North East and in furtherance of its efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate surrendered and repentant Boko Haram terrorist members, the Defence Headquarters has established rehabilitation camp in an Exercise known as Operation SAFE CORRIDOR.

The main focus of Operation SAFE CORRIDOR is geared towards rehabilitating and reintegrating the repentant and the surrendering Boko Haram members back into normal life in the society.

The repentant terrorists in the Camp would be taken through various vocational training so that they could be useful to themselves and be empowered to contribute meaningfully to the economic growth of their fatherland.

This seems to me to be a very good idea. But is there no other more suitable government agency that can manage this? Why is it the reponsibility of DHQ? The military should provide security for the camp but other government agencies and NGOs (including international ones) should operate it.

Yeap pretty good idea.

But the best people to handle such rehab is either the military or DSS. Government agencies or NGO to handle repentant insurgents, that we be too delicate. These are once deadly people, don't forget that.... embarassed

Somalia publicly executes former al Shabaab spokesman

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - A former media officer for the Somali Islamist group al Shabaab was publicly executed by a government firing squad on Monday for ordering the death of six journalists, court officials said.

Hassan Hanafi, who arranqged news conferences for the al Qaeda-linked Islamist group when the militants controlled the capital Mogadishu, admitted during his trial to personally killing one journalist in Somalia.

"Today, the court fulfils the execution of Hassan Hanafi who had killed journalists," Abdullahi Hassan, deputy judge of the court, told reporters at the scene on Monday.

A masked Hanafi was tied to a pole before government forces opened fire at an execution field at a police training camp, according to witnesses.

Since 1992 a total of 59 journalists have been killed in Somalia, according to industry body, the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Al Shabaab seeks to impose its strict version of sharia, Islamic law, in Somalia, where it frequently attacks government targets, as well as hotels and restaurants in the capital. The group was pushed out of Mogadishu by African Union peacekeeping forces in 2011 but controls many rural areas in southern Somalia.

Hanafi, 30, admitted joining al Shabaab in 2008 when he worked as a journalist for a local broadcaster. He was arrested in neighboring Kenya last year and returned to Somalia for trial.

A few days ago, a military court executed two men accused of killing a female reporter employed by the state radio, court officials said.

The apprehended terrorists commanders include Lawal Abba, Mallam Hisna and Mallam Gana in Shatte, Bulla Jaja and Bula Burra towns.
The troops also rescued 1,275 persons held hostage by the terrorists. The rescued persons are being administered and screened by 152 Taskforce Battalion pending onward movement to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE F-7NI FIGHTER AIRCRAFT STRIKES BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS LOGISTICS BASE AT KANGARAWA

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), in continuation of its employment of airpower to decimate the capability of the insurgents, has successfully taken off another logistics base belonging to the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) Group. The latest air strike was carried out yesterday Monday 11 April 2016 by NAF F-7Ni fighter aircraft against the insurgents’ location at Kangarawa in Northern part of Borno State. The scale of accompanying inferno and multi explosions, as can be seen from the footage of the air strike, suggests that the location possibly houses a fuel or ammunition dump. The strike therefore constitutes another major setback for the insurgents, while providing tangible evidence of many of the recent successes recorded by the air component of Operation LAFIYA DOLE. ‪#‎nigerianairforce‬

I think the MOU signed with innoson motors is yielding positive result on production of local spare part of our fighter jets. They must be the alpha and MB339 jets that where broken down. @iblawi Tnx for the info, I'll make enquiries and I will surely give update.

@iblawi the NAF was holding there annual re-union in bauchi and to also to commensurate tye event they have some newly renovated jets test-flights.

Army Chief Assures Sustainable Peace In Bauchi

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, yesterday assured the Emir of Bauchi, His Royal Highness Dr Rilwanu Suleimanu Adamu, that his domain and the state in general will continue to remain peaceful under the watch of the two army formations located in the state’s capital.

Bauchi plays host to the Armoured Corp and the Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian army.

General Buratai who gave this assurance during a courtesy call on the Emir as he arrived the city to attend  some official military events, said the officers and men of the Nigeria army under his command have been trained to be professionals in the discharge of their duties as it relates to civil military relations.

“We appreciate the kind of cordial relationship existing between the people of Bauchi State and the Nigerian army”, said the COAS.

“Bauchi has been the home of the Nigeria army as it hosts the Nigeria Army Armored Corp as well as the 33 Artillery Brigade. We appreciate this and we assure your Royal Highness that the people of Bauchi are in safe hands because our personnel have been trained to be professionals in line with my vision of having a professionally responsive Nigeria army in the discharge of its duties”.

The COAS had also informed the Emir that he was in the city of Bauchi to attend a function of the Nigeria Airforce  and also attend a pre-Nigeria Army Day celebration event.

The Emir of Bauchi commended the  Nigerian army for the successes it has been recording in the ongoing counter insurgency operations in the North East.  He also congratulated the COAS for his appointment even as he urged him to fully justify the confidence the government and people of Nigeria have in him.

The COAS had earlier on his way to Bauchi commissioned two blocks of newly refurbished 2 by 30 Corporal and Below Quarters at the Headquarters of the 3 Division Nigeria Army, Jos and also inspect ongoing building of accommodations at the Nigeria Army Armored Corp barracks in Bauchi.

BREAKING: Big Catch For DSS, Notorious Boko Haram Commander Bello Nabbed

You may recall that last week, this Service informed the public of the arrest of Khalid AL-BARNAWI, known for his leadership and notoriety in terrorism activities in Nigeria. Nigerians were also informed of his talent-spotting and recruitment of young people into the Ansaru/Boko Haram terrorist groups. With the arrest of AL-BARNAWI, the Department of State Services (DSS) has made an uncommon success in the decimation of these groups and their leadership. Similarly, the Service wish to inform that it has further arrested Bello DANHAJIYA, a close associate and presumed second in command to AL-BARNAWI.

2. DANHAJIYA is a Fulani from Zamfara State and a strategic accomplice of AL-BARNAWI. Preliminary investigations have disclosed his involvement in gun-running, cattle rustling and other nefarious criminal activities principally on the directives of his commander, AL-BARNAWI. So far, efforts are being made to conclude the investigations and commence prosecution in line with the law.

3. In another development, this Service, worried by the spate of impersonation of government officials and the increasing rate of defrauding of unsuspecting members of the public by some unscrupulous elements, launched detailed investigations aimed at checking the situation. The Service therefore wish to inform the public about the outcome of these successful operations which have led to the apprehension of the following suspects:

i. Aminu ADO (aka Yusha’u Muhammed Yerima ADAM);
ii. David Ali MICHIKA;
iii. Umar HAMZA;
iv. James Malu AKUNE; and
v. Kazeem Kayode USMAN.

4. Aminu ADO: ADO was arrested on 24th March, 2016 at Keffi Nasarawa State. He confessed to defrauding T.Y. DANJUMA (Lt. Gen/Rtd) of N1m in 2015 and wife of Akwa Ibom State Governor of three Hundred thousand Naira in collaboration with one Hajia AISHA (FNU), who impersonated the wife of former Gombe State Governor, Danjuma GOJE. In addition, he confessed to defrauding members of the public by claiming to be the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the President. Further investigation revealed that ADO had the mobile phone numbers of all the Federal Executive Council (FEC) members, some State Governors, their wives and Aides as well as that of prominent Nigerians and Military/Police Officers.

5. David Ali MICHIKA: Subject is a 43-year old from Jimeta, Adamawa State but resides at Ungogo LGA of Kano State. He once lived in Riyad, Saudi Arabia for ten years as an illegal immigrant until he was deported in 2008. He was arrested in Kano for impersonating the Secretary to the Government of The Federation (SGF). MICHIKA had called several high ranking Government officials soliciting for funds to settle spiritualists (Mallams) for prayers rendered for the success of the APC in the 2015 general election and for peace in the nation.

6. Umar HAMZA: HAMZA is a 39-year old school teacher from Tarauni LGA of Kano State. He was recruited by MICHIKA to act as the spiritualist based in Niger Republic to be paid for the service rendered. He received calls from the victims while pretending to be the spiritualist.

7. James Malu AKUNE: AKUNE is a 40-year old male from Tarka LGA of Benue State. He claims to be a contractor with business interests in China and USA. He paraded himself as the brother to the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and defrauded people on false promises of contracts. He equally arranged to get contract for companies from the victim Support Committee for the North-East, headed by T.Y. DANJUMA. Before his arrest, AKUNE called Contractors and promised them appointment with the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.

8. Kazeem Kayode USMAN: USMAN was arrested in Lagos on April 12th, 2016. He has been on the trail of security agencies for the impersonation of Abba KYARI, Chief of Staff to the President.

9. It is instructive to note that these suspects opened and operated bank accounts through which they collected various sums of money from their victims. A major revelation to this effect is the haste with which banks opened accounts for prospective customers without ascertaining their genuine personal details. Another noticeable trend is the spread of impersonators who adopt different illegal means to defraud their victims. The public is to take note of this trend and report such suspicion persons to appropriate security agencies.

10. This Service wish to re-emphasize its commitment to the safety of all law abiding citizens and residents and will continue to decisively deal with those who have chosen to be on the wrong side of the law.

Chibok girls still alive, will be united with families soon —Shettima

Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, on Tuesday, said  the over 200 Chibok girls, who were abducted on April 14, 2014, would soon be united with their families.

Speaking during his visit to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) office in Abuja, Shettima stated that information at his disposal revealed that the Chibok girls were still alive.

“I am an optimist, and based on information at our disposal, the Chibok girls are still alive and will be united with their families soon. We are hopeful that the girls will be recovered.

“Though security falls within the area of responsibility of the Federal Government, the government is doing all it can, not only to rescue the girls, but to care for the well-being of the generality of the people. We have started rebuilding most of the communities; we are determined to rebuild all.

Meanwhile, the United States will continue to assist Nigeria with intelligence and advisory support to locate and bring home the girls abducted from their school in Chibok, Borno State.

Mark Toner, US State Department Deputy Spokesperson, said this in a statement on Tuesday, in New York, on the second anniversary of the kidnapping of the more than 200 Nigerian girls.

It said the kidnapping of these young women, along with the kidnappings of countless others by Boko Haram, epitomised the terrorist group’s depravity.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the statement called for the immediate release, without preconditions, of all hostages held by Boko Haram.

It said the US was also delivering over $240 million  in development and humanitarian assistance across the Lake Chad Basin region.

This was to provide conflict-affected populations and refugees with transitional assistance, psycho-social services, health programmes and emergency education for children displaced by violence.

Somalia: Pentagon - 12 Al-Shabaab Militants Killed in U.S. Airstrikes in Somalia

A Pentagon spokesman says the U.S. conducted airstrikes Monday and Tuesday in Somalia that killed an estimated 12 militants affiliated with the al-Shabab Islamic extremist group.

The spokesman, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, said the targeted militants posed an imminent threat to U.S. personnel who were assisting Somali government forces north of the city of Kismayo in southern Somalia.

Local residents said the U.S. airstrike struck Al shabaab camp in Yoontoy village, some 20Km north of Kismayo city, the regional capital of Lower Jubbada province.

These were the latest in a series of U.S. attacks in Somalia aimed at al-Shabab, which has ties to al-Qaida. Al-Shabab has been carrying out a campaign of deadly violence targeting government officials and international troops, as well as hotels and restaurants in the capital.

General who lost Barracks to Boko Haram discharged, acquitted

The trial by a military court martial of Brigadier General J. O. Akomolafe, who was the former Brigade Commander of HQ 21 Brigade, Bama in Borno State, has finally been concluded.
The officer was arraigned before the military court sitting at the 9 Brigade Officer’s Mess, Ikeja Military Cantonment in Lagos State over the loss of Mohammed Kur Barracks, Bama in Borno State to Boko Haram insurgents on September 1, 2014.

The court martial was convened and inaugurated by the then General Officer Commanding HQ 81 Division, Major General TI Dibi, now retired.

Akomolafe was charged and tried for cowardly behaviour, failure to perform military duty and loss of military properties, namely his staff car and four Hillux vehicles.

The officer, who was represented by Femi Falana (SAN) and Major Femi Oyebanji (rtd), successfully convinced the court that the loss of the location was due to lack of serviceable equipment, adequate ammunitions and personnel to repel the attack.

The uncontroverted evidence adduced during the trial was that troops fought gallantly despite the limited resources available, but were overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the insurgents.

They therefore withdrew from the barracks because no further efforts could have prevented the location from falling.

A shocking revelation during the trial was that the then General Officer Commanding HQ 7 Division, Major General M. Y. Ibrahim, had prior knowledge of the constraints of the HQ 21 Brigade, headed by Akomolafe, but he did not address them.

In fact, several requests for ammunitions replenishment for troops and repair teams to effect repairs of the equipments sent to him by Akomolafe were deliberately ignored or not granted.

More shocking was the evidence that he got early information of the impending attack from the then former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General J. T. Minimah (rtd), but intentionally refused to pass the information to the brigade commander.

Also, a last minute appeal by Akomolafe to him a day before the attack for urgent equipment and ammunitions to fight and safeguard Bama was also denied.

Upon a review of the case, the court martial, headed by Major General S. D. Aliyu, upheld the submissions of the defence counsel and discharged and acquitted Akomolafe as he was found not guilty on each of the three count charges.

In his reaction to the judgment, General Akomolafe thanked God and his lawyers for saving his life and his career in the Nigerian Army.

He was also full of gratitude to the members of the General Court Martial for their sense of justice.
