samir101ng:

Hi Djcn,

Its been a while. Nice speed. Where was that taken ?? Glo has definitely improved.

Yeah, will be interested to find out about all the cables (ACE, MAIN ONE, WACS) etc !!! What are they charging now for wholesale bandwidth to ISP's ??

Hmmmm! Glad to hear that glo internet speeds have improved. i abandoned my Glo sim for internet over a year ago due to frustration. The signal would keep dropping from HSDPA, to EDGE to GSM every couple on minutes and I grew tired of that. I might just give glo a try one more time when my current bundle on Etisalat expires. However, Glo and MTN aren't on HSPA+ yet though.

Main One CEO: "Less than 5% capacity used up in submarine cables that landed Nigerian shore."

http://www.technologytimesng.com/news/2012/07/less-than-5-capacity-used-up-in-submarine-cables-that-landed-nigerian-shore-ceo-of-main-one-says/

It is a little disheartening but there is hope. A lot of the infrastructure required to make broadband a reality is on ground (as I understand it). The nigerian factor just needs to be overcome.

samfibby: GLO is actually yet to deploy its GLO submarine marine cable for broadband connectivity. According to a friend that works with glo, glo submarine has only been commisoned not deployed. They are currently laying fibre optic cables in major cities. By beginning of 4th quater, they might start connecting customers nation wide. I hear broadband charges will be drastically reduced. Lets hope they deliver on their promise.

GLO 1 has been fully commissioned

Main One Introduces Global Video Connect

Tata Communications, a leading provider of The New World of Communications, today announces that its Video Connect Network has been extended into Nigeria through a partnership with Main One Cable Company, Nigeria’s premier provider of broadband internet services. The Video Connect service will allow broadcast and production companies in Nigeria to distribute their live video content worldwide as well as enhance international broadcasters’ reach into this key emerging region.

Following increasing demand for high-quality video capability in and out of Nigeria, Tata Communications’ partnership with Main One connects its global video network to an expansive local fibre network, creating a dedicated video network connecting to key broadcasters as well as production and post-production houses in Africa. Unlike traditional MPLS or contention networks, having a dedicated video network ensures the high quality and consistent video transmission needed for video broadcast, allowing Nigerian media companies to be truly global.

The Video Connect network offers new levels of scalability and bandwidth supported by Tata Communications’ round-the-world, wholly-owned, sub-sea fibre network and Main One’s cable between Europe and West Africa. Video content transfer can be purchased on a permanent or per-hour basis, opening up new opportunities for Nigerian companies through flexible payment options. The Video Connect network can carry both live and file-based content. Seamless worldwide transmission is now possible through 300+ connected media hotspots including key cable and Direct-to-Home (DTH) headends, as well as production and post-production houses around the world.

Genius Wong, Senior Vice President, Global Network Services, Tata Communications, says, “At Tata Communications we have always focused on giving our media customers access to key media hotspots for delivery of broadcast quality video for contribution and distribution across the globe. This extension of Video Connect reach, together with our existing presence in South Africa and our global Video network, will further enhance the value proposition for our customers, allowing the distribution of premium broadcast quality content into and out of Africa.”

Funke Opeke, CEO of Main One, says “We are proud to be part of this ground-breaking partnership, bringing new opportunities not only for Nigeria, but Africa as a whole. Our high quality fibre network, coupled with Tata Communication’s international expertise and global network will open up a new world of opportunities for video coming in and out of the African region, as well as create new business opportunities for studios, broadcasters, production and pre-production companies throughout Nigeria.”

This expansion of the reach of Tata Communications’ Video Connect Network in Africa compliments its South African Video Connect presence, via its subsidiary company, Neotel. Coupled with the recent completion of the world’s first wholly owned sub-sea network cable which rings the globe, the company is unrivalled for global connectivity.

Slowly but surely Main One are making inroads into the retail segment of the broadband market. With a new PoP in Abuja to connect the Northern part of the country, we are getting there in terms of broadband penetration. It's strategic partnership with NIGCOMSAT to deliver last mile connectivity via satellite is also good development. For a 2 yr old company, that's quite an achievement. Glo-1 is also still laying fiber in remote corners of the country. However, am more interested in Fixed Line access which is still growing very slowly.

Glo connects Lekki Estate to its fixed network

National Carrier, Globacom, has begun the connection of residential estates in Lagos and other cities to its fixed line network, riding on the Glo Broadaccess infrastructure.

As part of this roll out drive, the company has connected NICON Town, one of the newest residential estates on the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos.

The Head of Glo Broadaccess, Mr. Karuna Menon, said the telecommunications company is delivering high quality voice service, data transmission, high speed Internet services and video streaming to the 433 plots in the estate.

He said Globacom’s fibre optic cable laid earlier on the Lekki-Epe axis makes it easier for the estate to connect to Glo’s fibre optic infrastructure.

Menon added that from the fibre cable on the expressway, the infrastructure is stepped down in a central hub in the estate and redistributed to homes to connect end users.

A visit to NICON Estate showed that Globacom’s network installation in the estate has the capacity for 1568 connections, though the estate currently has about 433 houses. Residents have the privilege of choosing whatever bandwidth bundle they wish, based on their Internet usage requirements and this is made available by the wireless multiple cable points or both.

“The infrastructure is robust and unique, not seen anywhere in Africa,” Menon said.

The management of the estate attested to the speed and capacity of the Glo Broadaccess network.

According to the General Manager of the NICON Town Management Company, Mr. Jimmy Osho, residents are capable of downloading or uploading films, videos and heavy data files with incredible Internet speed.

On the cost of the facility to residents, Osho said last mile connections to the homes are affordable and the tariff is based on the individual monthly usage.

Besides the NICON Estate, several high-end customers have been connected to the Glo Broadaccess network and are enjoying the services.

Menon noted that more estates in the country have shown enthusiasm in the service “and we hope to spread the coverage in a very short time.”

@purplekayc

Broad access has no data cap, and I don't think there is any Fair Usage Policy.

That's not surprising considering glo1 and the fact that it's a wired connection.

Glo to build Nigeria’s largest Data Centre

Telecoms giant and Nigeria’s National Carrier, Globacom has set up state- of-the-arts Internet Data Centres in Lagos to provide co-location, disaster recovery and dedicated hosting services to its clients all over the country.

At the same time the company is expanding its existing data management platform by planning to build another world class facility that will be Nigeria’s Largest Iconic Data Center providing Tier 3 and Tier4 enterprise data services at Abuja , Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.

The new data centre will provide network based services, applications, equipment and Cloud Services in a highly safe secure and backed up environment.

According to Globacom’s Corporate Chief Information Officer (Information Systems), Mr. Cesar Camara, most of the websites and servers of various Nigerian organizations are hosted with established markets, such as in UK, USA Etc. due to unreliable power supply insecurity and other deficiencies in the system.

“This is why Globacom is stepping in to become one of the top players in the Managed Services Industry across Nigeria and West Africa. We do this by leveraging on our existing telecoms infrastructure, Glo1 Submarine cable, reliable power supply network, experienced manpower and experience in building State-of-the-art technologies for our existing voice and data telephony services” he told journalists while conducting them round its Data Centre in Lagos. .

Data Centres, especially the Tier 3 and Tier 4 categories, which provide the highest level of failure proof, redundant, secure and safe environment, fault tolerance, compartmentalization and continuous cooling, are highly valued by most organizations because all mission-critical/real-time applications today depend on server uptimes.

“this make our high capacity Data Centres highly sought after by by all categories of businesses including SMEs, Financial Institutions, Oil and Gas, Educationists, Hospitals to telecoms service provider” Camara said.

He explained that Glo’s data centre has achieved 99.99% uptime for all our servers and systems because they are housed in safe, fireproof and secure environment built to international standards with a 24- hour power supply, internet connectivity with data backup capacity and redundancy for all equipment .

The data centre’s products are designed and bundled based on either building and leasing rack space for computing machines or leasing computing space (cloud-based infra or apps stack) and power.
