The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has fixed Saturday, May 23, 2015, for the conduct of chairmanship and councillorship elections in 22, out of the 23 local government areas of the state.

RSIEC chairman, Prof. Augustine Ahiaizu, who announced the development to newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, said election will not hold in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of the state. Ahiaizu stated that the commission was relying on the State Independent Electoral Law No.2 of 2001 as amended and State Local Government Law No.3 of 1999 as amended, to conduct the election.

He said political parties were eligible to sponsor candidates for the election, provided that they completed and submitted an expression of interest form to participate in the election on or before April 24, 2015.

The RSIEC chairman stated that the commission had concluded arrangements with security agencies to ensure free and fair elections on May 23, 2015.

Ahiaizu said, “The security agencies will take care of security and ours will be to conduct the election.’’

The chairman said the period for the election was not short because it had 32 days to carry out the exercise.

He said, “The law requires us to use 21 days to conduct the election . We have more days and we are within the law. Our activities are law based and we cannot go outside the law.”

Reacting to the announcement by RSIEC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, said plans by the state government to conduct local government election without following the stipulated laws is an exercise in futility.

Chairman of PDP in the state, Chief Felix Obuah, said the party opposed moves to conduct local government elections , Few days to the expiration of its tenure.

by the way is it constitutional for Amaechi to hold LGA polls when he is supposed to be writing hand over note

Bros Amaechi is trying too hard.
If he lost in the presidential/governorship elections, what makes him think his party will win in the chairmanship and councillorship elections?

Planned conduct of LG poll in Rivers illegal, waste of resources – PDP

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has described the planned conduct of the local government council elections in the state’s 22 local government areas as illegal, provocative and a waste of resources.

The proposed conduct of the election was announced on Tuesday by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.
Reacting, the PDP said it unequivocally “rejects and dissociates itself from such arrangement by the Governor Rotimi Amaechi-controlled Rivers State Electoral body (RSIEC) under Prof. Ahiazu”.

“Accepting to organize such illegitimate and doubtful exercise at the 11th hour of the termination of the All Progressives Congress-led government in the state does not present the chairman and his Commission as responsible, honourable and unbiased.
“In as much as the party believes that officials off RSIEC are abreast with the provisions of the Electoral Law and guidelines, particularly as it relates to the conduct of the LG polls, we still wish to bring to their attention the section that stipulates 90 days notice to the political parties before the conduct of any election.

“The anxiety, suspicion and distrust which the rush to conduct LG polls is generating since yesterday shows that the state is not ready for another gamble by Amaechi. What the Governor ought to be doing now is to constitute May 29 Transition Committee and to ask for submission of handover notes from his Aides and Executive Council members as being done at the centre by President Jonathan.

“Our analysis of this development points to the facts that hurrying to conduct election before the end of Gov. Amaechi’s tenure (about four weeks) is done simply to justify the desires of the out going Governor, including causing political crisis in the state for the incoming Governor to contend with.

“Morally, it would be out of place to contemplate plunging the state into another phase of election at a time the tension that arose from last elections are still is our door step”.

The PDP bemoaned the sudden realization to hold the exercise, wondering why Amaechi did not give attention to it long before now when he had the opportunity and time since the tenure of the elected chairmen and councilors elapsed over a year ago.
“Gov. Amaechi and the APC leadership should explain to Rivers people genuine motive for holding LG polls now other than using it as means of siphoning State resources, fomenting crisis in the state and putting in known elements at the various Local Government Areas that will act as a cog in the wheel of the laudable development programmes to be initiated by the incoming government in the state.

“We’re also aware that Governor Amaechi has concluded plans to use his rubber stamp members of the non functioning House of Assembly to amend the laws on conduct of LGA elections mid way in the State to enable him continue with the exercise having realised the legal lacuna.

This is another way of destroying the fortune and democratic system, as well as perverting justice in the State by a desperate Amaechi.”
The PDP, therefore, called on Rivers State people to ignore the announcement by the Rivers State Electoral Commission, calling for their participation in the proposed election.

He must be high on weeds. Conduct election in Rivers given the volatile political climate? Just few days to swearing in? What is wrong with Ameachi's brain? The man is covertly trying to use the LG elections as a cover to create more political problems for the incoming administration. More like setting the house on fire for his opponent before leaving office. Ameachi must be stopped.

For those who call Amaechi their hero..... there you have it.

The courts have been shut for years and Rivers people are languishing in jails because their cases cant be heard

The funds meant to develop Rivers State and her people have been wasted on a non related campaign

Rivers people have rejected Amaechi and all he stands for but he won't let go. He is keen on setting the state on fire before he leaves by conducting elections 6days to handover after disregarding same elections for a good part of his 8years.

In few years time, Amaechi will go down as the worst politician south of Nigeria.

Amechi still wants to rock the boat. Why can't he accept defeat like GEJ and move on? BTW, there is still this thing called " COURT" where you can go and challenge the results..
