Because google knew there was no need of a new OS. Because google knew that the world was and still comfortable with the OS on ground. But there was a great need that time to reinvent the search engine and so they gave us a search engine. Writing cms off is not fair.
Whites don't relax like us sha. Founders of cloudflare are now billionaires what if they used WordPress to start a blog instead, will they be where they are now?

Their is alot of problems associate with the use of CMS, firstly it is easy to attack by hackers because most of the code were stored in the database. secondly, the customization is limit compare to u developing raw. thirdly, alot of unneccessary files which re not useful but gaining some resources from the server. fourtly, templates can be used by 1 millions folks either free or paid ones. lastly, you re still a consumer not a programmer!!!

The founders of themeforest.net, eleganttheme.com, wootheme.com are all millionaires. It's not every web developer that will invent a product, service or application. There are those that wil be coding themes, templates, plugins, modules for cms. Nobody is afraid of coding stuff from scratch.

Those guys u mentioned coded those theme from scratch and am very sure they have their own custom made applications on some other platforms. They didn't become millionaire from using cms without using their head to program.

Please explain better to me how the decision of these companies to use cms justifies your opinion?
Does the fact that Obama uses a blackberry phone make blackberry the best of all choices? Who says these companies/organizations can't make bad decisions too? Do most of them even know anything about what's going on in their website backends ? Who knows if some just contact the most readily available techies around to design those stuffs for them. They just want to see a website up and running quick, who says they care much about how it's built?

What objectionists are saying in brief context is that, Nigerians have not gotten to that point where we should be using cms's . Before these white guys started using cms softwares they've been coding from scratch so why can't Nigerians learn the rudiments from scratch before venturing into cms packages even if they are going to eventually use cms? Most of the cms programmers in Nigeria know no jack about programming and they go about parading themselves as programmers. Some can't even write common html.

This is why it takes them months or even years for them to fix when stuffs goes wrong. Do you know why most of these websites fall easy victim to hackers? The reason isn't far fetched from the fact that their codes are familiar (which makes it easier to find loopholes).

For so long now only a few nigerians have ever done something creative on the Web even when most of them have brilliant idea, and you know why? because of their inability to convert their ideas to reality through codes.
If your idea is unique, you definitely won't find its cms code anywhere.

There's nothing bad in cms packages though if you're building a general stuff like blogs, news site, forums but nothing beats a website created to your own taste. It's easier to fix when things go wrong and usually load time is 5x faster.
.

One more reason why I hate cms is it's bloated code structure. Too many unnecessary stuffs

Most reasonable comment!Don't mind those lazy bones, that they can use drag and drop doesn't make them Programmers.

You said they coded those themes from scratch. Exactly. That is my point. That we should start coding themes and plugins for wordpress. Cms is good, but like I said earlier, we should not just use wordpress like babies. We should use it like a pro. We should be ready to be developing wp themes and selling at themeforest. We should start forking wp and turning it around and extend it.

We should learn web development and cms. If we get project for custom web dev, we wil do it. If we get project for cms, we will do it. The reason why it seems we ar using cms a lot is because we get projects that mostly demand for cms.

If you hav passion to develop an application like cloudflare, youtube, google, voguepay, etc, then go for it. If you want to be a good web developer that specializes in building themes for cms, then go for it.

Alright bro. I hardly work for people sha. Unless as a support expert! God on my side in the next few years u will see why I didn't run my site on smf or WordPress. Took me 18 months to arrive at the current stage and I am still developing the project.
We need a few people that will stay away from cms to take naija to the next level.

Nice and sensible one bro, I have developed more than 25 custom plugins since 2012 and were being used by their respective owners. I never suggested it they requested it, should I tell them nah not good we need to develop your site from scratch. They want a quick solution in form of value and I gave it to them, shikenah. These are business people who only cares about what they can do with technology, not letting technology take advantage of their time, think like them, give them what they want and everybody live happily in their little tiny way.

Fixed. I was finding a to way explain it , but you have done justice to it. To me the only issues with CMS sites is their low security status compared to sites coded from scratch with some other advanced technologies, even at that it doesn't mean cms sites are always vulnerable it only means that more security fortifications are required in most of them. gret response.

Well, as regards that "vulnerability", every application have their vulnerability no matter how you develop it. There will always be a bug to fix and update to release. It is very good to build your own platform. For instance, a custom application can be developed to work in a certain manner (talk of web apps like payment processors, you definitely can't use CMS like WordPress), but when all you need is just to publish contents (articles, posts, etc), why on Earth would you want to write a script for it when you can save time?

So, back to the vulnerability issues, every app will always have issues and the survival (and evolution) of such apps depend on how quickly it can be fixed. This is where open source software are excelling. WordPress has evolved and metamorphosised as a result of its "openness" which makes it available for hundreds of thousands of developers to fix bugs and release patches and updates in short time.

However, the problem we have in Nigeria is that we don't contribute well to open source softwares. ( I throway salute to the few Nigerians that are actually doing that anyway).

Bottom line: if it is not a custom application, then don't waste time re-inventing the wheel.

In response to this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/2287661/why-nigerians-love-cms-plugins

It is good to note that it's not only Nigerians that love CMS, Framwork or Plugins. It's a global phenomenon.

The point is DON'T EVER RE-INVENT THE WHEEL!
Unless there is something outrighly different you want to offer.
CMS or Framework is not a bad idea.

If you have ever used Microsoft Word to type a letter, then you have used a CMS.
If you have ever used Photoshop to crop your picture, then you have used a CMS.

Just imagine developing your own Word Editor like MS Word just to type a letter.

The problem we should be looking at is: Our inability to make CMS, Framework or plugins better.

We should not just use wordpress and joomla basically. We should learn how to unleash the powers of wordpress and joomla by forking them and turning them around to achieve amazing things.

Mashable.com was using wordpress. Mashable is one of the biggest blogs in the world. It was later that they developed a custom cms for their blog.

New York Times blog is running on A CMS (wordpress). The official website of the government of USA is running on a CMS (drupal).

Even facebook (http://newsroom.fb.com/), google (http://www.gv.com/), mozilla (https://blog.mozilla.org/), and blackberry (http://blogs.blackberry.com/) are using a CMS (wordpress) in their blogs. Why didn't they develop a blog cms for their blogs? That will not important since there is a good one on ground.

Here are 22 GREAT WEBSITES running on a CMS (wordpress):

NOW THE BIG ONE!!!

30 Insanely Awesome Websites using WordPress as a CMS
SEE THE AWESOME WEBSITES HERE: http://www.1stwebdesigner.com/awesome-websites-wordpress-as-a-cms/

What I will challenge every web developer in Nigeria is to learn the in and out, hooks and functions of some of these CMSes and start developing themes, templates and plugins for them.

As technology evolves, web development will continue to be easier. It will amount to taking people back to the stone age to insist on coding from scratch for every project.

Thank you.

Fantastic Point OP

I'm amazed at people arguing blindly just becuase they can code themselves or consider themselves as expert..... The truth is that to get the best out of CMS you still need to know how to code....OP never said one should abandone coding for CMS.....and in this present age there's no time to re-invent the wheels

That's why we have all manners of frameworks ( the CSS ones, JS ones, PHP ones ) all in a bid to get peps to work faster and smarter.

And to be a better CMS person ( WordPress ) You still need to know your HTML, CSS and PHP.

I was in this situation before, not understanding the logic of using CMS and leaving my Mockup first ( Low + High fidelity) and then pulling up sublime text to start coding until a client that insisted on her site being built with WordPress forced me to learn and start using CMS.

But i didn't and never abandoned my from scratch runs.....because not all site requires CMS and not all requires coding from scratch.

If you know one, don't look down on the other and if you know both, then GREAT.
