Their is alot of problems associate with the use of CMS, firstly it is easy to attack by hackers because most of the code were stored in the database. secondly, the customization is limit compare to u developing raw. thirdly, alot of unneccessary files which re not useful but gaining some resources from the server. fourtly, templates can be used by 1 millions folks either free or paid ones. lastly, you re still a consumer not a programmer!!! 1 Like |

directonpc: The founders of themeforest.net, eleganttheme.com, wootheme.com are all millionaires. It's not every web developer that will invent a product, service or application. There are those that wil be coding themes, templates, plugins, modules for cms. Nobody is afraid of coding stuff from scratch. 1 Like |

CreativeWeb:Those guys u mentioned coded those theme from scratch and am very sure they have their own custom made applications on some other platforms. They didn't become millionaire from using cms without using their head to program. |

directonpc: You said they coded those themes from scratch. Exactly. That is my point. That we should start coding themes and plugins for wordpress. Cms is good, but like I said earlier, we should not just use wordpress like babies. We should use it like a pro. We should be ready to be developing wp themes and selling at themeforest. We should start forking wp and turning it around and extend it. We should learn web development and cms. If we get project for custom web dev, we wil do it. If we get project for cms, we will do it. The reason why it seems we ar using cms a lot is because we get projects that mostly demand for cms. If you hav passion to develop an application like cloudflare, youtube, google, voguepay, etc, then go for it. If you want to be a good web developer that specializes in building themes for cms, then go for it. 1 Like |

CreativeWeb:Alright bro. I hardly work for people sha. Unless as a support expert! God on my side in the next few years u will see why I didn't run my site on smf or WordPress. Took me 18 months to arrive at the current stage and I am still developing the project. We need a few people that will stay away from cms to take naija to the next level. 1 Like |

CreativeWeb:Nice and sensible one bro, I have developed more than 25 custom plugins since 2012 and were being used by their respective owners. I never suggested it they requested it, should I tell them nah not good we need to develop your site from scratch. They want a quick solution in form of value and I gave it to them, shikenah. These are business people who only cares about what they can do with technology, not letting technology take advantage of their time, think like them, give them what they want and everybody live happily in their little tiny way. |

smsdigito: Well, as regards that "vulnerability", every application have their vulnerability no matter how you develop it. There will always be a bug to fix and update to release. It is very good to build your own platform. For instance, a custom application can be developed to work in a certain manner (talk of web apps like payment processors, you definitely can't use CMS like WordPress), but when all you need is just to publish contents (articles, posts, etc), why on Earth would you want to write a script for it when you can save time? So, back to the vulnerability issues, every app will always have issues and the survival (and evolution) of such apps depend on how quickly it can be fixed. This is where open source software are excelling. WordPress has evolved and metamorphosised as a result of its "openness" which makes it available for hundreds of thousands of developers to fix bugs and release patches and updates in short time. However, the problem we have in Nigeria is that we don't contribute well to open source softwares. ( I throway salute to the few Nigerians that are actually doing that anyway). Bottom line: if it is not a custom application, then don't waste time re-inventing the wheel. |

CreativeWeb: Fantastic Point OP I'm amazed at people arguing blindly just becuase they can code themselves or consider themselves as expert..... The truth is that to get the best out of CMS you still need to know how to code....OP never said one should abandone coding for CMS.....and in this present age there's no time to re-invent the wheels That's why we have all manners of frameworks ( the CSS ones, JS ones, PHP ones ) all in a bid to get peps to work faster and smarter. And to be a better CMS person ( WordPress ) You still need to know your HTML, CSS and PHP. I was in this situation before, not understanding the logic of using CMS and leaving my Mockup first ( Low + High fidelity) and then pulling up sublime text to start coding until a client that insisted on her site being built with WordPress forced me to learn and start using CMS. But i didn't and never abandoned my from scratch runs.....because not all site requires CMS and not all requires coding from scratch. If you know one, don't look down on the other and if you know both, then GREAT. |
