@NiceSoul

I saw one of your posts talking about Dynamips. Do you not use it? The only thing Dynamips can't emulate is switching. I am going to begin a series on how to run Dynamips for those of us on this forum who want to feel what a router looks like. I will probably make a video and upload on Rapidshare or something. I am trying to make some time.

Yes, it is true i contributed to that but that is what i read. I have not use Dynamips for once although i have tried all i could to search for it online but no luck. Challenges i face is Cisco hardwares & books. I like to read and put whatever i read into practise. Hope i can get over my problem someday. Keep the good work on, God will reward you as you assist. Do u have an ideal of BCS?

Finally I have picked myself up and got around doing this. What we are about to do here is big. . and I hope I can get a lot of input from fellow Cisco people.

I know some of us might have heard about and probably already use it. . . but for those who haven't, I want to use this opportunity to introduce to DYNAMIPS.

Dynamips, in simple English,  is a Cisco Router emulator. I know some people have heard about Boson Net Sim . . . dump it pls! Dynamips is the way to go. Dynamips, with its front end Dynagen, emulate a proper Cisco IOS router. In other words, if a router can do it, Dynamips can just about do it. I am not saying Dynamips can replace a real router, but Dynamips can make you more than familiar with everything routing in Cisco.

As at this writing, Dynamips can emulate a decent number of models in 1700s, 2600s, 3600s, 3700s and 7200s. Unfortunately at this time Dynamips cannot fully emulate Cisco switches, although there are a few things you can do.

You need to download the software (Dynamips can run on Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 and on Linux), install it, download a Cisco IOS from Cisco and you are good to go.

You can emulate most things a router can do depending on the IOS you are using. You can run as many Routers as you desire on a single PC. The number of Routers you can run will be dependent on the capacity of your PC. You can even bridge Dynamips to a live network. i.e. You can route packets from a live Router or Live Switch to the Virtual Routers on your PC.

Dynamips at this moment can also emulate a Cisco Pix Firewall using PEMU as the front end.

I cannot say all the details here. This is supposed to be a small intro to the emulator. You can read more about Dynagen and Dynamips here and here respectively.

You can also download Dynampis from here.

I am going to post a Video about how to Install it and get it running.
Re: CISCO Thread: CISCO Professionals Identify Yourselves by nateevs(m): 1:33am On Feb 21, 2009
I have made the Video. I call this VIDEO No.1. . . (DYNAMIPS: INSTALLATION AND BASIC APPLICATION) and it can be downloaded from here.

This is a video on how to start out using dynamips. It does not invole any explanation of complex stuff or cmore complex topologies. We will discuss here how to make bigger networks, what kind of machines to use, what variant of IOS to use and so on. I hope this benefits someone. Let's all get our Routers started and being Ciscoing. . . .

Let's build this place.

Good Job you guys are doing here, a very clever idea to set-up a cisco thread.As for the dynamips solution,the limitation is the abiltiy to get hold of a valid cisco ios image.Iv tried the cisco website but found nothing.Please if u have a link as to where it can be easily obtained,we will be very pleased.Nice work once again.
Re: CISCO Thread: CISCO Professionals Identify Yourselves by nateevs(m): 2:56pm On Feb 22, 2009
@Heledy.

What we are discussing is Networking literally. However it is Networking - "The Cisco way". Effectively Cisco is a brand. They manufacture networking equipment and you have to be Cisco certified to fully understand how to use their equipment for network implementations. There's a lot more but that's about the simplest way I can put it.

You can learn about Cisco certifications here. And also on here

@Double N

Really are you kidding me? I can get a Cisco IOS on the internet faster than I can put a shirt on. You can't get an IOS on the Cisco website unless you have a CCO account. To get a CCO account, you must be a partner with Cisco, you must have bought an equipment from them or you are a Cisco Certified Expert.

Search the name of the IOS you want. . No more clues.
For CCNA, I think you might be able to do with any IOS.
For CCNP, I recommend the c3640-jk9o3s-mz.123-14.T7. It will suffice for anything CCNA as well.

@Double N

Distribution or aiding distribution of Cisco products on a public forum? Really no one wants to be caught doing it. That's the rule of the game. I won't tell you where to download a Cisco IOS but I will tell you it is definitely on the internet. Google is your friend. . believe me being able to search makes you a better Network Engineer!

I actually did not put it in there on purpose. I thought there might be too many things to try to put into the video at once. . . and that's why I called the video VIDEO 1. . . which means there are more videos to come.

Thanks for the input anyway.

@nateevs,

You have really started a good thing here and I hope it goes on like this. I just concluded my CCNA training and would be writing the exam soonest. At the moment I have the Boson Net sim simulator on my laptop. Is that ok or you think I need the virtual router you talk about up there?
Re: CISCO Thread: CISCO Professionals Identify Yourselves by nateevs(m): 8:45am On Feb 27, 2009

Netsim has got nothing on Dynamips. . . . Switch now, get going and make your CCNa training even more meaningful with proper hands-on practice.

@ nateevs

Like i mentioned early in one of my reply, the main challenges we in 9ja have here is hands on. I know i can prepare on my own and complete my CCSP. I have written 1 exam, 3 more to go but i still need hands on. This is the constrain i know most Nigerians have. I hope this will come to an end soonest.
Re: CISCO Thread: CISCO Professionals Identify Yourselves by nateevs(m): 12:31am On Mar 02, 2009
@NiceSoul

Hands-on is exactly what I do not understand. Are you talking about Hands-on at work or hands-on like having a lab on your own? Like any part of the world, you do not need to get a job to have basic hands-on. . more like the basic hands-on gets you a job. . . . . and the basic hands-on you can get everywhere. Maybe you want to exlain what you are saying further.

Nobody used Dynamips yet? . . . . expecting to see some reactions trickling in by now. . .
Re: CISCO Thread: CISCO Professionals Identify Yourselves by visitor30(m): 10:43am On Mar 02, 2009
Hello people, i must commend nateevs 4 the effort and time in setting up a thread like this one on CICO. I'm a cisco certfied CCNA nd wrk as a system/netwrk admin in a small firm here.
This is a very nice thread on this forum, in preparing 4 ma CCNA 2years ago, i joined a forum called sadikhov dot com, a very nice forum and you meet people who re ready and willing to share their knowledge, experience and materials with you at no cost.

i remember wen i was about to write ma CCNA, i need to practice wit the latest dumps after my study, on dat same forum a guy who just bought the dump with his cash, uploaded d link to d same dump he bought just about a week.

What am i sayin here, wit people like nateevs and the rest of you guys making excellent contributions here, i want to sey dat we are ready to make a great change in our society nad especially here in naija.

But like some1 said here, we re most times limited to access to study materials and the few people who have them will want to give it out to you 4 a fee. am not sayin that is bad, but i've come to realize, from our Asian brothers that d more u share your materials and experinces the more you get to learn same too. Thanks to all you guys.

But as for the DYNAMPIS i've heard about it even downloaded it but yet to start makin use of it. wer i wrk, we have just a single cisco router 4 our internet access and dats it. so talkin about Hands-on(both at home & at wrk) like Nicesoul mentioned is problem in itself.
We all do knw also, dat all these stuff too cost money and which most of us dont have free access to.

But however, wit a thread like this one(I pray it stays this way and achieve its success) we are about to break that barrier and move to the next level.
@nateevs, the Rapidshare link is not working, please do somthing about it.

@Nateevs

What i mean by hands-on is having access to routers/switches to configure. Its not enough to read them on text books but to play around with this mentioned devices. I don't know the cost out of 9ja but its absolutely expensive here. Yes, i would love to have my own Lab but my brother e no easy at all.

wer u able to check the website i mentioned sadikhov try dis = http://www.sadikhov.com/forum/index.php?showforum=81
you can get a lead way on how to get d dynamips gns3 emulation application here.
What am planning on doin is to get a high end system to use for this project. to be frank wit you man, we sure need this Hands-on becos its wat will seperate us from the ordinary professional. i remember an interview i went for sometime ago, i was ask how many routers do i have on my current netwrk and how often do i work on d routers,

Thanks for visiting this site. . . . Hope you give up your visiting status and become a full and committed member of this thread. You must have been doing a lot of searches if you've come across Sadikhov. I am on it right now as I do everyday. Resourceful to the least. I have a number of very useful websites that can help us all.

However when would start having our own threads and sites basically dedicated to Cisco? That's why I want us all to converge here. Discuss our problems and fine solutions.

The rapidshare link is fine. I just tried it.

@NiceSoul.
Ok. You just said you want your own lab as well. Labs are very expensive for any individual no matter where you live. . but somehow we all have to find a way round it. . . . as for me I buy only what I cannot find in software form. I really love to have live equipment and I do, but I won't go on a spending spree when there are solutions to our problems.

Like I said to you earlier you saying you have a problem in Naija is very vague. Why don't you start by saying . . I have reached a stage in my CCSP studies where I need to use TACACS+ or PIX for example. I do not have to money to buy Cisco Pix or TACACS+ software what can I do?

With that, we have a starting point. . and we take it from there. Have seen the video I posted. .?

@nateevs,

well dat happens to b d user name i choose, am no longer a visitor to this forum, only seun wont allow me change ma user name and still retain all ma previous post.

talking about sadikhov, i actuall 1st came in contact wit that site way back in 2006, but i was wrkin wit a bank den and was lookin 4 a way to improve ma ict skills and change jobs. well d rest is history now.

Like i said b4 now, this thread is a dream come through and an answer to d prayers of most of us here. its reali gonna afford us the opportunity to learn and share from the knowledge & experience of others.

In my own case, i reali dont get to do much on the cisco router we have in d office. its just 4 our internet connection. d switches we have are not cisco switches and as such ma cisco trainin & cert is not bein put to productive use. no much of Hands-on working experience.

But with the dynamips, i believe by the time i set up a system for it, i can sure play around nd get lots of stuff done.

let me try the rapidshare link again. pls how were u able to hide d url to ur rapidshare site & replace it with ''here'' would like to learn dat, so i dont go about displayin full addresses of url links. Thanks

You seem to me like somone who is here to stay. . . . Great stuff. Pls check the raid share link. . . It's valid for 90days. I tried it and it still works.

The way to replace a word with a URL in to use the "insert hyperlink. It will give you something like this . All you need to do is to here [, ] . . . . . end it typing url in the brackets. I did not want to put the final "url" as it won't show what I am trying to explain.

Hope you get that. .

Get your system. . . . start Dynamips and let's get fired up.

@natvees,
Hey man wats up and were have you been.
succeeded in downlaoding the files and installled the dynamips on my system. i was able to downlaod an ISO file. going through the setup video my ISO file came out as a .bin file system and d example in the video uses an IMAGE file system.
On the Dynagen Sample Labs, that which came with installation on Sample1 uses a .net file system and after editing with either notepad/wordpad, it refuse to save tellin you that you dont have access to save the file.
In d video tutorial d file format der is diff.

(Titled: VIDEO No.2. . . (DYNAMIPS: INSTALLATION AND BASIC APPLICATION PT 2).
I did the video in a rush. If you noticed after I entered the autostart command the CPU usage still topped 100%. I ignored it in the video. Apparently I was supposed to put the command above the line [localhost:7200].

and the format should look like this.

autostart = false
[localhost:7200]

That wat Dynamips will only load the routers but not start them. You will then have to type the command "start R1" to start the routers one after another.

Another good practice is to copy out the idlepc value you got when you issued out the command "idlepc get R1" and paste it in your .net file to make it look like this.

[[3640]]
    image = \Program Files\Dynamips\images\c3640-jk9o3s-mz.123-14.T7.bin
    #npe = npe-400
    ram = 160
    idlepc = 0x

This way the Idlepc Value becomes a global value. i.e it works with any number of router instances you have in the .net file and also you won't have to issue the idelpc command everytime you start Dynamips.

Nice to hear from you. I hope others can follow and slowly we begin to make this place big. Remember to post the problems you have here. So that we can solve them together.

@NiceSoul.

Have seen the video I posted. .?

@ Nateevs,

Thank you for your active post and contribution to this forum, we shall all live to benefit from it. Yes talking about having my own lab is a wish which everyone will love to have. It is not easy though but you dream it first, plan and set your mind towards it. As for the software you mentioned, once can do that if he/she is exposed to them. I heard about dynamips when my boss resumed in our office last year from CBN. If not that, maybe this forum would be the first place i will hear it. Even with that, i have it downloaded on my laptop but dont know how to use it. Your video has helped to some extent and i think am getting along now. We learners need more of this stuffs to be confortable since we dont have access to live routers & switches.

All assistance and effort to support will be appreciated and i will spread the same around too. Knowledge and information is power. We could hook up on yahoo messenger. msn or skype if you dont mind. Sorry, my reply came late. I was actually re-locating from Abuja to Lagos.

Regards
