SCHOOL: THE POLYTECHNIC, IBADAN.
NAME: Sammyscholar
TOPIC: Legalization of Abortion in Nigeria: a Freedom of Choice
STANCE: supporting

In every nook of Nigeria today, it is common to see countless children wondering about with no one to point at has their parent or where to point at as their place of abode. Many of them are product of unwanted pregnancy whose parent had dumped on the street few days after they were born. Cases abound of babies dumped on refuse sites, walk-ways, etc. Many of them were never planned for in the first place. Such children are those that grow to become menace to the society.

More pressing are the cases of pregnant women who had severe complications [that sometimes result in mortality] as result of their bad state of health. So also are the unfortunate rape victims who had to contend with unwanted pregnancies that they had never wished nor bargained for. They [in most cases] had to live with the ugly stigma for the rest of their lives. All these could have been contained [and could only be contained] if there is an instrumental law legalizing safe abortion so women can have proper control of their lives.

Dishearteningly, whilst many have been advocating safe abortions as the way to go, some have vehemently disagreed, calling it barbaric, inhumane, murder and all sorts of names. As a pro-choice and a progressive, I make bold to say: LEGALIZATION OF ABORTION IN NIGERIA IS A FREEDOM OF CHOICE.

We cannot continue to deny women the right to make choice about issues affecting their lives and expect a peaceful and serene society. Every woman must have the right to choose whether or not to have an early termination of pregnancy according to her own will. Abortion is not a murder to a pregnant woman whose life is in danger and could only survive by getting ride of her pregnancy. Abortion is never inhumane for a rape victim whose aspirations have been traumatized and could only be revived by aborting her unsolicited pregnancy. What do we say of parent that has had the optimum children they can cater for but, mistakenly, had a pregnancy that could destabilize their family forever? Of course, having an abortion is the way to go! Or can we contest the fact that no one is above mistake?

Many anti-abortion advocates may say abortion denies the fetus the right to life. But it does not! Getting ride of pregnancy when it poses a threat to the life of a woman is not a murder. It becomes a murder only when there are no solid reasons to justify the action. Many may even go further to say abortion is dangerous for the lives of women. It is not! It only becomes dangerous when it is handled by illegal and unprofessional health workers; which are more reasons why abortion should be legalized so women can have access to legal and quality abortion procedures under the care of professional health practitioners.

Many countries that have made it illegal to have abortion are now nursing their wounds. One of such countries, Romania, under its dictator, Nicolai Ceausescu, made declaration that the country's policy of legal and safe abortion be reversed. Instead of reducing abortion, it led to the mushroom of underground abortion networks. Countless maternal deaths were recorded as a result of unsuccessful abortions handled by illegal and unprofessional health workers. Countless babies died for lack of medical care, food, and maternal beds. According to Joyce Arthur's article published on ‘pro CHOICE action network’ site in 1999; "the country [Romania] was so embarrassed at its soaring maternal and infant mortality rate that it abandoned international standards for recording them. Over 20 years, an estimated 10,000 women died needlessly from illegal abortion alone. Ceausescu's action led to his down fall [he was executed in 1989], and it resulted in thousands of abandoned and neglected children whose plight moved the world"

In conclusion, abortion is not a murder; it is not a denial of life if it is done at the right time and under the right conditions. Having access to safe abortion is the only way to protect our society against proliferation of: maternal and infant mortality, crippling emotional handicaps, troubled home and family, abuse and neglect of children by parents, early/unplanned parent hood, juvenile delinquency/criminality, and other ugly occurrences.

Lest I close, I once again, established solidly that: legalizing abortion in Nigeria does not mean everyone must have abortion; it is only a freedom of choice and no woman should be forced against her will. Thank you.

papindinho:
Legalisation of Abortion can be somewhat of a birth control measure. You know, several highly populated states are poverty ridden and teeming teenage pregnancy has contributed to the immense increase in births. No wonder USA, China and India among other states subscribe to this position.

Moreso, given the fact that every person is expected to enjoy some measures of independence over their life as enshrined in the ground-num, I think it's high time every person is allowed to decide whether to born the baby or tuck it away.

Researches have shown that teenage pregnancy has contributed to increase in crime rate. As most criminals are products of unwanted pregnancy. Most of these children of circumstances are deprived of adequate care, proper upbringing and other basic necessities that make a proper upbringing.

A brief walk into the path of history exposed that legalisation of abortion only came into the broadlight in 1973. Prior to that time, around 30states had prohibited abortion as against the stand of the other twenty.

Abortion in India is legalised for only twenty weeks old pregnancy.

If China and India, two of the most populated countries in the universe can adopt this posture, the question for Nigeria, Africa's most populated country is - why not?

The longer we delay legalising abortion in Nigeria the more damned we are as a country. Go to villages like Ugep in Cross River state and count the number of maternal mortality as a result of illegal abortions perpetrated by quack PPMVs and other medical practitioners.

Come to think of it, do you know the number of potential babies the Vaseline crew waste on daily bases, you might argue that it takes divine hand for fertilization to occur, good, but how sure are you that there wouldn't have been a fertilization if you didn't waste it.

I give it to the Poly students, not because of my stand oh, can count about 4 points raised by them, succinct and concise.
For the LASU flag bearers, just a point, with big big English.

Kudos to you all

ON THE PRESENTER FROM LASU

In the midst of the dwindling urge for intellectual food have we seen this robust and well researched work. I cannot but credit. However, you were so engrossed in making this work academic that you forgot that too much of it do not hold water here. Touches of oratory lines and analogy would have done. I have no doubt that most people have reservations on that ground.

Also, except on a careful perusal, you went all preaching morality. My question and point of response if I were your opponent is- the definition of morality is subjective. So dynamic that if 3 people are slapped, the reaction based on their moral inclination would differ. So, is it more moral to keep a child of rape than to abort it?

In addition, an average reader may not be too sure of your stand. However, you did a great job and displayed the required knowledge of the topic. I say well done. I met LASU students in a couple of debates back then- they were blazing fire with the microphone and this further reveals that they are good on every platform. Score would be made known at night.

A child of rape? This child has a right to life. This fetus might be the only child one bear. It's no woman's right to abort a child. If you know you can't take care of them, the the government should establish a place where 'children of rape' would grow up. sad

I've enjoyed reading this. I'm pro-choice and the presentation from LASU does nothing to change my stance. Here's why:
The main argument of the essay is that abortion is unacceptable because one life is not more important than another. So, according to the LASU presenter, it dosent matter if a pregnancy resulting from rape prevents a girl from pursuing her dream of university education or if a woman is told she'll die if she tries to deliver the child, she must go through with it because her life is not more important than the baby's. This thinking is flawed. Since the baby's life and the mother's are of equal value, the mother shouldnt have to risk her life to deliver the baby. So, to ask the mother to go through with the pregnancy at great risks to herself is to give more value to the baby's life.
More importantly, people dont just get abortions because they like it, no. It's a response to a problem; namely, an unwanted pregnancy or one(a pregnancy) that puts the mother at great risk. The essay condems abortion as a solution but does not give us alternatives. So, do we just ignore the problem and the consequences therein for the society?(Several of these consequences have been mentioned in the pro-choice essay).
Frankly, the presentation does not reflect the complexity surrounding the issue. This is demonstrated when the writer dismissed the ardous and financially tasking job of raising children as, a child simply 'needing food and time'. What about education, affection, shelter, security, etc Is food itself easy to come by?
So, basically, the presenter wants more children to be born but doesnt care what kind of life these children live economically, socially and emotionally. Also, it dosent seem like the presenter have given much thought to their position. Infact, one gets the impression that they are simply repeating what they've been told.
PS This is disorganised, once you start typing on this phone, it is hard to go back to edit. Also, I have focused more on what has not been said than what was.

First, I think this is a debate and whatever you believed in before now on this subject isn't likely to have changed.
Considering the difficulty of the topic, I think the LASU guys have a clearer understanding. His points aren't so much and he did justice by countering possible points from his opponents.
The IB poly side of the story, apparently, is the easier stand. And I think he was able to make points but some people lose interest in your points when your diction is poor.
