How To Learn Database Management by phetty(m): 9:00pm On May 16, 2015
Computer technology geeks in the house, hello.

I am a graduate of mechanical engineering with no/less programming background knowledge. I wish to study Database Management though. So I'd like you all to be my guide.

What are the resources I'd need to study to excel in the adventure I want to embark on? Thank you for your anticipated assistance.

You can enrol for a database management course with any recognised ICT institute around your area but if you'd like to teach yourself then you should go start with SQL. there are tons of materials available online through Google search or on w3school(dot)com

Bro, thanks for your prompt comment. I'd like to do self-tutorial before I perhaps enrol in an ICT institute.

What application(s) do I need to install on my system before I can start learning SQL?

You can install Oracle database client and continue from there. As I said earlier, run a quick Google search and you'd be on your way to becoming a great database manager

Hold on, lemme give u advise,
Jumping into oracle with out a background of any Db is like standing in front of a train, on high speed.
What do you know about select * from people... obviously nothing, and u wonna dive in to Oracle, you gonna have issues in the end.

Start with Ms access, then progress to mysql, then oracle, no offence if I sounded harsh.

Youtube is a good place to start your journey, smiley everything I know in programming I learnt from there.

Books explain the theory. I believe a sound knowledge of the theory is needed before delving in. He's a mechanical engineer and I will give a comparison with a roadside mechanic (a technician). The engineer knows why a catalytic converter is needed in a car whereas our mechanics r happy to yank them off your car

You Wonna kill a Nigerian, give him a book.
That's why the level of carryover in computer science is just awesome.

Ever since my lecturer back in the university started teaching his students vb.net with projectors and practical, the students knew what he was saying.

He can. That's what i did. It's not going to be easy but all one needs is constant practice. it takes 10,000 hours to master anything. Just two months into it and i can write queries easily. it's quite simple if you think about it. All you need is be able to think logically and the rest is easy. I'm self taught by the way. With the help of google and youtube.

I don't think the variant of SQL matters much, I personally learned the Oracle variant (I know 12c for instance). You just have to understand the principles behind relational databases.
