If you´re looking for the stereotypical trip to
Africa, then Cape Verde is not the destination
for you. But if you are looking for an exotic
island full of variety, great music and food,
welcoming people, and a culture that is both
simple and complex, then book a ticket to
Cape Verde.

Made up of 10 islands, 9 of them inhabited
each with its own flavor, it is a Portuguese-
speaking country about 300 miles off the West
Coast of Africa.

Cape Verde has a shared history with
African Americans in that the people too were
slaves brought into Cape Verde from other
African countries. Cape Verde has been
independent just 38 years.

We will do a series on the various islands of
Cape Verde. Let´s get started.

Island No. 1: Boa Vista

Many tourists flock to Boa Vista—and for
good reason. The country´s third largest
island, it is a great place to unwind by the
sea.

Besides relaxing at the beautiful beaches—
such as the soft, white sand Santa Monica
Beach– on this island, there are plenty of
other things to do. Make a stop at Deserto de
Viana and you´ll think you have landed ion
Mars. Its rocky red clay soil and isolation
makes it otherworldly.

The turtle is a big deal in Cape Verde—in fact
it is a symbol for the country. Why? Because
many spots in Cape Verde are hatching sites
for sea turtles. Turtles are a protected species
here. And in Boa Vista it is a must to take a
late-night excursion to see literally thousands
of turtles emerge from the ocean to lay eggs.

This takes place from late May to September.
Whale watching is also big in Boa Vista—no
pun intended. The period between March and
April is the peak of whale breeding season.

There´s more. If you are a sports enthusiasts,
Cape Verde is one of the most important
destinations in the world for windsurfing and
kite-surfing, especially on Boa Vista.

Don’t worry about having trouble finding a
place to stay on Boa Vista. The island offers a
wide range of choices—from mega, all-
inclusive international resorts to small quaint
pensions.

Considered one of the best resorts on this
resort-filled island is the 750-room Riu

verde/boa-vista ). It is part of a Spanish family
owned worldwide chain. Í was amazed when I
stayed here—it´s huge, unlike any hotel found
in Africa–or North America, for that matter
(except maybe Disney World). An all-inclusive,
you have tons of dining options drinks flowing
all day and night, and a bucket load of
activities—from traditional Cape Verde
“funana” dance lessons to beach volleyball to
great spa services (I had an absolutely
fabulous deep-tissue massage) to a late-night
disco and live entertainment. You might be
tempted to spend your whole trip here. Don´t!
Get out and see this enchanting island. The
hotel can even help you arrange various off-
property excursion.
