Jonathan made corruption attractive, says Niyi Osundare

MAY 18, 2015 : TOLUWANI ENIOLA

Renowned poet, Prof. Niyi Osundare, on Sunday berated the President Goodluck Jonathan administration, saying the President gave “corruption a well furnished chair in his dining room.”

He spoke during the annual Distinguished Alumni Lecture of the Christ’s School, Ado-Ekiti, Alumni Association, in Lagos.

Osundare, who spoke on the topic, “No more business as usual: Nigeria’s new-found change and the lessons from the past,” described the Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government as a nightmare to the nation.

He said if the PDP had won the March 28 presidential election, the country would have headed for “the purgatory of desolation.”

The poet carpeted the outgoing administration for promoting impunity and weakening the economy.

He said it was unfortunate that a former Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, who was indicted for the N255m bulletproof car scandal could be elected as a senator.

According to him, the outgoing government made evil deeds attractive by not punishing government officials indicted for corruption.

He said, “We have a President who saw no difference between right or wrong. Here is a President who saw no difference between stealing and corruption. The PDP offered transformation without change, motion without movement. The President made evil deed attractive. People commit crimes and get away with it. As long as you belong to the President’s party or you know his wife, you are safe. A criminal runs to Aso Rock for being called a thief and the President shuts the gate and say, be not afraid.”

Osundare urged the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to deliver on his campaign promises.

He said the US President, Barack Obama, refused to visit Nigeria because the country was not leading by example.

The poet also urged Nigerians to hold the new government accountable, warning that if the APC failed to perform, Nigerians should vote the party out.

“Rather than be the giant of Africa, Nigeria has become a gigantic embarrassment,” he said.

Advising the Buhari government, he said, “We demand drastic reduction in the remuneration of public officials. Government should no longer be a ‘chop chop bonanza.’ This outrageous expenditure of the government is destroying the economy and depleting our moral capital.

“We must break the jinx of erratic electricity. Let us try a knowledge-driven economy. The new government should surround itself with people who are not afraid to ask questions. If leaders steal less and think more, there will be change.”

Dignitaries at the occasion include a former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Prof. Itse Sagay, and Femi Falana.

All these APC propagandists sha.

What's even the so-called corruption in the cars Oduah bought?
Where the cars not bought in reality?
Did Oduah just swindle the money without buying the cars?
Did she take the cars to her house?
Are the cars not still being used by Lagos and Abuja airports?

Don't tag everyone who points out wrongs in Jonathan's govt as APC. Google up Prof Niyi Osundare and you'll see the guy isn't just another talker.

Chinua Achebe wasn't tagged APGA or PPA when he castigated OBJ and his government

People hate to hear the truth. The good Professor is right on point. Jonathan was a failure in all levels of governance and Nigerians did the right thing in getting rid of him. Good riddance to Nigeria's worst nightmare. If GMB fails to deliver, the same pressure will be on him too. Enough of excuses for incompetence and mediocrity. Nigerians deserve better than all these worthless leaders.

Forget about all these people shouting corruption, corruption without proof.

Today, one riff-raff wakes up and allege about a certain billion or trillion missing. So, the only case the Prof could point to is the 225m Oduah case but he has forgotten Fashola's two bullet-proof range rovers actually cost more. He will not talk about those ones.

Nigeria's corruption ranking actually improved under Jonathan according to the last Transparency International ranking. I will rather beleive Transparency International who are experts in assesing corruption than all these APC apologists shouting corruption corruption about

In the release Reuben Abati gave, Jonathan was actually competing against himself. See the progression under Jonathan
2010-------------134
2011-------------143
2012-------------139
2013-------------144
2014-------------136

under Yaradua, see the results
2007-------------147
2008-------------121
2009-------------130

Yar'adua reduced it from what he met it at under OBJ govt and brought it down to 121 and GEJ government took it to 144 before dropping it at 136. I dare say the ranking for 2009 dropped because Yar'adua fell ill and had to leave govt to the hawks.

If fashola bought such, then he did worse than Oduah and he has no excuse. We expect the GMB govt to change the perception just like Yar'adua did. The fact that a corrupt election even brought him in didn't stop him from trying to chart a new course before the cold hands of death took him.

Any critic of bad governance and impunity must be a member of the opposition according to your warped TANoid logic ?.

There are millions of well meaning nigerians who think of collective good before party or regional affiliation.

If only the corruption could make him attractive as well. Jonathan legitimized corruption and shielded convicted thieves, to the detriment of his region that can now only boast of looters, bunkerers, militants and thugs as their political and economic leaders. So clueless was he that SS youths are now begging to have a project sited in Lagos by Lagosians relocated to Bayelsa, underlining the educational deprivation that ensured that they failed to acknowledge the logistical and operational unfeasiblity of such a move in their entire diatribe.

Frankly you can't disagree with the man, it is simply the truth.

When the president of a country (just imagine that) goes on air to:

-state that stealing is not corruption.

-grant state pardon and VIP status to people convicted of corruption.

-make people standing trial for corruption his spokes persons.

-state that corruption is exaggerated.

-state that a government official stole too little to be thrown in jail.

-tell the world he doesn't give a damn about criticisms over his non-declaration of assets.

-mock a very highly placed whistle blower saying he said X today, Y the next day, and Z the day after instead of swinging immediately into action to determine exactly what is missing.

-cut deal with crooks granting them perpetual immunity from prosecution.

-set up a member of a committee set up to unravel the theft of government resources running into trillions of naira in order to give junk status to whatever their findings turn out to be.

Etc, etc, etc.

Jonathan appeared to have literally been in a state of bear hug with the monster throughout his tenure. Gladly, Nigerians did the right thing this time.

He sure did. He also made foolishness in corruption attractive - Here is why:

Yesterday more was revealed about the illness that Mama Peace survived from. I have stated clearly that the first family were so foolish to spend N1 billion (total of N6 billion in 6 years on food alone) yearly on food without building any hospital that could take care of their medical needs. I also stated that if PEJ or GEJ have a complete coronary block (God forbid) that would require a bypass surgery, they would be dead before the air ambulance gets to Germany.

Perharps more shocking to corroborate my earlier asserstion of foolish people ruling us: PEJ said that they wanted to sacrifice her for GEJ to win. For her to have even said this in public, it means that GEJ also believes it, because as the person directly involved, both must have discussed about this sacrifice, and certainly GEJ was not hearing of it for the first time yesterday. Any right thinking Nigerian would know immediately after hearing that statement that they have been governed by very silly people.

APC was busy conducting surveys, studying voting trends and dissertation work from world renowned researchers on the last elections. They were conducting opinion polls, interviewing people to know exactly how to focus their campaign message and what was the most effective way to get to those that would actually vote. We had analytics from statisticians, political scientist and we directed our money to places that would give us the greatest return. On the other hand, PDP was hoping on "human sacrifice" black magic and looting the treasury to win elections. It is a shame that most Nigerians still believe sacrificing and murdering people will give you power! No - it won't. Only foolish people think that way. Only foolish people that have medical problems think that a vilage voodoo was sent to them.

Fellow Nigerians, let us begin to be innovative, let us think of solutions to our problems in scientific ways. Let us stop waiting for the white man to solve the problems we have long relegated as a "spiritual" one. Let us stop being foolish and start using our brains. We are very smart people. Don't be like Mama Peace and GEJ. We need smart Nigerians that think rationally to move Nigeria forward. Let us step up and make our country great again!

I don't think so...corruption has always been attractive...especially since the 1960's (Nzeogwu's ten per-centers.).

A big part of the problem is Nigeria's resource dependent economy. Because we do not really depend on IGR in Nigeria( except in Lagos)....but instead depend on money realized from sharing revenue realized from the sale of any available resource(yesterday agric, today oil).....the leadership does not have the same sense of responsibility to the people as it would have if it's main source of revenue was taxes. So...stealing happens. Who cares?

While he exaggerated, and he did not really identify the cause of corruption, he is right in his defining the problem...and it is sad that not much effort was made to curb it over the last six years.

Like cleaning up the NNPC for example.
