The embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its readiness to merge with other political parties that share its ideology.



Making this known in statement in Abuja on Sunday, May 17, Chief Olisa Metuh, the national publicity secretary of the party said the PDP was ready to welcome other parties who may want to join its fold.

Metuh, according to Punch, said the concept of merger should not be misconstrued that the party was contemplating on a change of identity.

“having been the guardian of Nigerian democracy for 16 years during which it nurtured and blossomed democratic governance as well as etched its name in the pantheon of good governance, the PDP will not in the circumstance of ephemeral loss of power change its identity or its time-honoured characteristic values.” Metuh said

Adding that the party’s recent loss at the federal level was a temporary setback the party was looking forward to overcoming.

Emphasising on the party’s unchanging features, the national publicity secretary noted that the flag of the PDP remains green, white and red and ‘power to the people’ still remained the party’s national slogan.

The PDP, which has ruled Nigeria since 1999, lost the March 28 presidential election to the opposition All Progressives Congress.

The party also lost its majority position in the two houses of the National Assembly, as well as governorship elections in many states especially in the north.

Chieftains of the party are currently in a bitter tussle with Adamu Muazu, the national chairman of the party following the disastrous outing of the party in the 2015 elections.
