I Lost My Baby To A System Failure by wasamtech: 9:17pm On May 30, 2015
Its heart breaking that my new baby boy was lost due to systemic failure of government health ministries. On 28th May 4pm thursday evening my baby develop convulsion, l quickly drove him down with my wife to the hospital we had him. We were told he had reacted to jaundice and could only be treated through photo-therapy (blood transfusion) at the general hospital LASUTH ikeja.

He was immediately treated for convulsion and given a reference letter to LASUTH. l immediately drove down to LASUTH IKeja and on arrival we were told there is no (light) to conduct blood transfusion and referred to LUTH idi-araba mushin with an assurance he will be treated.
Baby Salman struggled and raised our hope with normal respiration that he was indeed gonna make it. At LUTH same night, we were told there was no light, no bed, no blood. A bag of blood needed to save his light cost only N5,000.00 but no room for accomdation. He was neither checked nor given first aid.

Students Doctor at LUTH were the doctors on duty at the Children Emergency Ward and said there is nothing they could do. We were referred to Randle General Hospital in Surulere same night same thursday, On getting to Randle, we were waiting for the Doctor while the baby was vomitting seriously and only for the Doctor to announce that he could not be treated there.

We were referred to MASSE General Hospital at Lagos Island same night same day. At Masse hospital, we were told no space to admit him as they have alot of babies to be administered upon. And someone suggested we go to FMC (Federal Medical Center) at Apapa via IDDO Oyingbo. We drove there again same night and on getting there they said they don't do blood transfusion there.

Finally we gave up and decided to go back home around 1 am Friday morning, baby Salman was still battling with life, we decided to locate Gbagada General Hospital on our way back to our private hospital and we lost our way only to end towards Berger instead of Oshodi to locate Gbagada, alas we ended up in an accident.

I rammed under a container truck that was packed on the highway without any safety indication, no back light, no reflective red sticker showing the trailer was not moving, l was about avoiding a trailer that was blowing out heavy smoke, and gradually slammed on my brake immediately l saw the packed trailer and miraculously my car ran under the trailer behind got the car bonnet flattened almost damaging my windscreen and then l knew God was with us as l was push back my seat with something like an airbag and the car came to an halt.

The driver quickly kick start and move the trailer as fast as he could, l came down and was shivering and checked the car, found out the engine was intact and my wife and baby too was save behind me. I had no injury in the process because my seat belt too held me tight and my car airbag was intact as well.

We drove down and headed towards our private hospital. Baby Salman was still breathing. On getting to the hospital he was placed on the drip, injections and oxygen. He was responding and at about 4:30 am Friday morning we headed for Gbagada General Hospital was he was still breathing. We got relived on getting to the children's ward seeing they are capable on reviving the baby.

While waiting for the doctor to come, my wife whispered to me that he was dead. At this moment tears rolled down freely and was calmed by the doctor on arrival. My baby struggled for life, yearning for revival through those journeys he never gave up, baby Salman was a 7months baby delivered in a normal birth even with already discharged placenta in the womb. He came out strong and smiling at will, after 2 days after delivery we were discharged. My hospital was at fault here because we were not willing to go home due to his prematurity but the doctor said we could go home. He ought have been placed on intensive care.

Now l shared this experience with everyone that need to know and to learn from me. Either way l was wrong or right but l know the government owes everybody a duty of care and that can be sued and or be sued for.

Please share my story to everyone on your list maybe it will get to the table of one those killers in government, health ministries, general hospitals and the society at large.

I lost my baby boy to a system failure.

Samson

This is what happened when the people in the helm of affairs don't give a damn, it's really unfortunate.

This is so sad. Did this incident occur during the fuel crises? May your baby's soul rest in peace and may another bundle of joy come to lighten up your home again. Please accept my condolences

It was on thursday 28th May and the fuel crisis was gradually reducing by them, there was fuel but a bit expensive, though l had a full tank that l bought at 105 per litre.

On reading about Jaundice on the internet, l found out that a photo-therapy treatment requires a florescent tube light that is sold between 300 to 500 naira which LASUTH IKEJA said they don't have but there is bed space but no light (500 naira bulb). There was light every where in the LASUTH premises, so l wonder why they couldn't save my baby's life because of just a florescent bulb that l can even buy ten (10) right there if they requested me to.

Please anyone with email address of where l can write a petition against the general hospitals involved or where l can direct letters to, do not hesitate to let me know. At least l want to use this medium to save other babies that might experience these wicked care from these government hospitals.

Thanks everyone for showing love. l appreciate. Remember, its my turn today, it may happen to anyone tomorrow lets all stand straight to kick out wicked caregivers out of our society.

In an advance country, my baby will still be alive now.

Thanks once again. Please let push this to the front page so people can learn

You know there was a near total blackout plus fuel scarcity just this week and I thought that was the case since the hospitals claimed not to have majorly fuel and light but by thursday everything had normalized a bit. I agree with you that it was a systematic failure

Sorry for your loss. May God comfort you and your family.

The main fault lies with the hospital where your son was born. How can a 7months baby (two months short) be sent home the next day? He should have been placed in an incubator/ICU. Was this a private hospital? I do not want to believe that a government hospital can send a pre term baby home.

If they had monitored your baby, maybe the jaundice would have been detected. The body defences of a pre term baby are low and the organs aren't fully developed at such stage.

Jaundice in newborns is fairly common and easily treatable as long as it is detected early. In your son's case, it appears the doctor didn't do all the required checks and all he wanted was to send your child home. It appears they gave him little chance of survival from birth, hence their lackadaisical attitude. Please, hold that hospital accountable.

So sad. It is well with your family and may God console you.
I believe there really was a systemic failure. The failure I was able to get from your story was that of the referral system. In ideal settings, any referral to another hospital ought to be confirmed by those referring you. You were sent to various hospitals and all didn't have the space or capacity to manage your sick child. You were sent on a never ending chase. So sorry. Your baby ought to have being transferred in an ambulance with a trained personnel to the hospital you were being referred to. Of course the ambulance should have confirmed the availability of space before setting off. All hospitals should have the phone numbers of all secondary and tertiary referral centers. All hospitals should also have several functioning ambulances and staff to man them.
Another major point I got from your story was that of no space. To be honest with you, we need more hospitals. For the population in Lagos, the hospitals are just not enough. There are only 2 tertiary centers in Lagos- LUTH & LASUTH, and a few specialist centers like Igbobi orthopadeics and Yaba psychiatry. That is grossly inadequate.
Health and education should be made a major priority in our country. How well off a country is can be determined by her health indices.
Once again, sorry for your pain. May God give you double blessings/twins for your trouble

My heart goes out to you and your wife and I pray God consoles you.

When a child is jaundiced, phototherapy is what is needed not blood transfusion. Blood transfusion also doesn't require electricity but phototherapy does.
I wonder why any hospital with maternity and paediatric unit will not have a functional phototherapy.

It's only in Nigeria that even the student doctors have this very condescending air around them and are not willing to go one single step above their daily routine even if it's to save a life. It's so pathetic.

The life we live in this country is by God's grace alone.

May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen

Sorry for your loss.
May God grant you the strength to bear it.

Truth is, our hospitals are sick. The system as a whole is crazy. I've seen situations similar to yours and one cannot but just look on as another helpless soul passes on to the great beyond.

We need a total over-hauling of the health system because this our 'let's manage' mentality cannot carry on any longer.

We as a people must demand it from the government at all levels, we must understand the importance of a working health system and support the different unions when they demand that government should act on our health sector. This is important because when some of these unions raise issues, government has a way of blackmailing them to look like they are only after money and at the end, we force these unions to keep working in these terrible conditions and the result of this is disastrous.

We must also demand optimal care from our healthcare providers and report erring officials to their respective regulatory agencies.

Once again, so sorry for your loss!

A preterm child with jaundice, convulsions will most likely need immediate exchange blood transfusion unless one wants the brain completely fried with jaundice. Most likely kernicterus has started setting in. In fact multiple EBTs might have been needed had the poor child survived.

What I don't ever seem to be able to grasp is the run around in desperate situations.
Too many stories of no bedspace or no something round 2-3 hospitals at the same time abound.
Truely a system failure. The Op made it to 5-6 hospitals and yet could not get help.
May God help your family through this trying time.

I still can't get my head around the fact that the Doctor sent home the very next day a pre term baby at 7months. sad

Even if they did not have the facilities to cater for pre term births, why wasn't the child referred to a government hospital or another hospital that's adequately equipped to handle such situations.

If they could refer the child when jaundice was discovered, why wasn't the baby referred immediately after birth.

I hope this is not a case of the parents insisting on "discharging their child" and taking him home "in faith" as it's a well known fact that a pre term child requires round the clock care and it is very expensive (both in private and government hospitals). Maybe they could not afford the cost of hospital care.

Whatever the reason maybe, government needs to do better in the heathcare sector.

May God comfort you and your family. Amen.

Thanks for the comment. We never insisted on discharging both mother and baby, we even asked them to take their time to care for them but they gave us a good bill of health that the baby is sound and okay to be discharged. We were only told not to bathe the baby nor cut his hair even at child naming as required by a muslim. We adhere to all tips given and we never expose the baby to cold nor too much heat.

We were not advise before referral whether we could afford expensive care or free public care as l detest general hospitals. I had given vengeance to God otherwise l would have either sue the hospital for negligence or even blacklist them by publishing their hospital address and phone numbers on the internet to prevent patronage.

We were completely ignorant of the health situation of the baby and thereby put our trust in the hospital as they so called professionals.

Thanks

Your story is so heart breaking. Really wish I could give you and your wife a big hug right now.

Sometimes we should always seek a second professional opinion. As you were aware your son was preterm, you should have just gone to another hospital.

That hospital must be VERY wicked to have discharged a baby delivered at 7months with no referral. Hospitals abroad in developed/developing countries will NEVER EVER do such. In fact it's totally unheard of.

God will certainly comfort you and give you triple for your loss. Amen.

This is just too sad undecided
Were you seeing a pediatrician?
At least, a pediatrician should have been able to pick something up during his 6 months check-up
I don't even know what to say
May God comfort you

Someone else' baby wil still die from their incompetence and the silence from you not blacklisting them.

Indeed, how could a preterm baby be sent home almost immediately? Is the hospital a juju shrine? How could they ask you not to bathe the baby and for how long?
