I Lost Mother Due To The Non-challant Attitudes Of Doctors by forlahkhe: 12:10am On Jun 04, 2015
My mother had intestinal obstruction bt we couldn't afford d bill(#150,000) by a private hosp in ijebu ode so we brought her to lagos hoping to get a better and cheaper service besides my sis is based in lagos. When we got to gbagada general hosp, she was placed in emmergency unit. She had endogastric tube to evacuate her intestinal content. She has not eaten for 4weeks since she bcame sick. She was placed on drip. Later d surgeons came and each person wl com and press her stomach(swollen & painful) and prescribe drip. They later booked her for surgery and demanded #40k(cheaper we tot), they said she shd b transferred to ward B where no relative would slp wt her, those in ward B ar expected to b taken care by d nurses. They wl b d 1 to giv dem food and care of them. Ward B is neater and silent bt wen we transferred mom there we saw dt d reverse was d promise they made. They leave d patients to wallow in pain unattended to. They just giv drugs and change drip and d nurses go bak to their common room to gossip. 3 days before surgery, we were asked to go do scan nd x-ray for mum, they rejected d results of those ones we av with us. What baffles me is dt despited plenty x-ray centres around gbagada hospital, we were instructed to go to mary- land, its either mary land or none. So, we left gbagada in the morning (11am) and on getting to maryland their x-ray machine is faulty. They didi only d scan for us, because of traffic we got back to gbagada @ 7pm; my mummy was in serious pain, she was just crying all through. D only source of strenght my mummy had was d drip which we have removed since morning and when we got back @ night, d nurses ddnt show any concern dt my mum was weak, it was wt pleading they put back her drip for her. Diff. Things happened dt I can't stat explaining now....to cut d story short, d D-day for d surgery came. We were all happy full of hope.( Meanwhile, since they ddnt allow us sleep wt our patients in ward B, I used to go and peep @ my mum in d mid night and I always c her crying in pain with nobody attending to her.) The MD, Dr Orhiafor came and checked on my mum, he asked us to get blood frm blood bank wch we did, we got everytin ready for d surgery. They av worn d green overall for mum for d surgery(10am) and Doc. Orhiafor told Dr sholanke( d surgeon managing mum b4)to step out of d case and he asked Doc. Tunji(TJ) to com in then he went through our file, he sed he won't do d surgery w.out d x-ray result and we told him wot happent; there he took is phone to call the owner of d diagnostics centre and he sed their machine has been repaired. So dr orhiafor asked us to take mummy back to maryland for d x-ray. Immediately mum heard dt, she started crying(orhiafor shouldn't av sed it in her presence) and she bcame cold. We begged and begged that they shd allow us do it @ a near by, they sed NO. Orhiafor said he would come bak for d surgery in 2days time cos d following day is a public holiday and wen my mummy heard dt too, she was crying dt she can't hold d pain for 2more days again. Mum bcame cold and started shivering seriously, I quickly ran to d theatre(there's an office there) to call on d Drs bt sholanke sent me away and TJ was busy playing with a woman. I ran to Orhiafor and he sed" go n call d younger doctors or is it me dt wl now follow u, common get out" I left in tears and disappointment. Wen I got bak, my mum was already gasping(4pm) I ran again to emmergency and pleaded to 1 Doc to follow me and giv her some hope, wen d Doc got there, he just sed"pele o" and he went to nurses common room and was asking y they don't have cold cocacola in their fridge.....when d nurses saw dt my trouble is too much, they gave me an endless list of drip and injection to go and buy @ the pharmacy. I rushed down to buy( I ddnt even collect change) and on getting back they have placed mum on oxygen bt I noticed that they ddnt put on the oxygen & when I told them they shouted @ me and said" when u know all ds y bring ur mother to d hospital". My mother struggled till she later gave up. When she died (8pm)we wanted to take her corpse bt d nurses sed they must take her to mortuary and we wl pay 10k to get her, we had to beg again to get our corpse oo. We ddnt even get death certificate cos d person to stamp has closed. I later learnt dt docs would refer patients to diagnostics centre where they get their own percentage on every money they patient pays. D nurses too said they know dt what the Drs ar doing is nt proper bt they(nurses) can't attend to surgery patients because the Doc wl hold them responsible incase their flup so they are sorry that they watched my mum died

My deepest condolence on the loss of your mother. May God continue to give you guys the fortitude to bear the loss, I will not dignify the hospital or the doctors involved in her treatment by blaming them.

Mothers are special, mothers are golden, mothers are our back bone, all mothers deserve to live until they get to a very old age before they die, mothers are our strength, mothers are a special breed. This might sound very mean, but as a man I would prefer the fathers to go first before all mothers.

Your mother is special and she is in a special place.

The touching part of your story was when you said, you moved her to Lagos over 150 Thousand Naira. Nairaland is not about YABS and INFO only, I am assuming it is a forum where we can come together to help each other when help is absolutely needed. There is no shame when it comes to seeking financial help, to help a loved one in a tough medical condition.

You could have at least tried to put it out here, some would have called you a scam, some would have called you names, some would have verified your stories and some like us would have been able in our little ways to help.

Please Nairalanders let us come together to help those who lack the finances, when it involves them or their family in dire need as regards medical reasons, and not just pour out condolences when they are dead

Your mother could have been my mother, a couple of years ago when we use to patronize quack doctors knowing we could not afford anything good. No matter what I say, your mom will not come back.

I don't know why your message hit me like this, but no mother or anybody at that needs to die from lack of good medical care.

But please accept my heartfelt condolence.

God will make your family smile again.

I have never done this before, but please can the MODS move this to the front-page please, if we were unable to help her with the finances. Then let there be an outpouring of Condolences by the Nairaland Family. MODS do the Needful, thank you.

Thank u and God'l bless u. We actually brought mum to gbagada cos we thought we wld get better medical service, more professional hands. We have taken her to abt 3different private hospitals before we brought her to lagos. Her first symptoms was diarrhea and the Doctor we met earlier assumed its typhod and ulcer and he gave her loads of flagyl(I don't know ao tru cos I was far frm home then) then she stopped stooling and won't deficate for weeks. It was d 3rd doctor(gyneacologist) we took her to dt diagnosed d real truth but we felt it wasn't his area of specialisation, so we decided to seek professional hands.

Teaching hospital wl b far more expensive o, besides, we thought its what general hospital can handle.......plenty experience I had while staying with my mom @ the hospital. I always avoid going to hospitals cos it brings back sad memories....

Sorry for ur loss bro, but why r u "changing mouth"? Did u take her away because of the money, or because u felt a gynaecologist that was able to diagnose intestinal obstruction wouldn't be able to treat her? [hint: there is no correct answer to the question]. Also I don't know how far Gbagada is from Maryland, but I know that doctors can be very untrusting people when it comes to diagnostic centres. There are so many quack labs and diagnostic centres these days that usually doctors just stick to the one they've tested and trust. And even though some centres appreciate doctors that refer patients to them (a few hundred to a thousand bucks per referral; how much be Xray sef, wey dem wan give the doc huge percentage?), the doctor would definitely never put 1k above the life of his patient.
Word of advice: until Buhari decides to privatise the health sector, don't patronise general hospitals for life-threatening emergencies. And I speak for myself and a lot of NLERS when I say that N150000 is NEVER going to be the reason why I take my dying mother, whom I can NEVER replace, away from a place where they are willing and able to treat her. I'm pretty sure that you WILL end up spending more than that amount on other things that could have been avoided. If professional help was why u went to the General Hospital (laughable, cuz it's a "GENERAL" hospital, u see, with mostly general practitioners), you could at least have met the main doc in charge of ur mum and asked him about his private hospital where he can expedite the treatment (he has one, don't worry). Either way, money gets things done, or done right.
Once again I'm sorry for ur loss. Take heart.

Waoh.....I can c that u read my post thoroughly.....anyways, thank u for ur comments. In my first post I wrote BETTER nd CHEAPER service(u c dt I know wot I'm saying)... We had more reasons to move mum to lag; we felt dt mum shd b in d care of ma sis dts based in lag since we(other children) are a bit far frm home, moreover, only dad can't handle d situation ........(Wanna antagonise that too??). Every Doctor performs better in his area of specialisation.for example, We all know dt mid-wives wl take delivery perfectly bt INCASE theirs complication dts y d gyneacologist is on stand-by(does dt ans ur que??) I ddnt put up ds post to gain sympathy nor for condolence msgs bt to reach out to Nigerians who would learn 1 or 2 tins. Mind u, d fact that a Doc. Can interprete a scan/ an x-ray result(basis of d diagnosis) doesn't mean he can work well on d ailment....Moreover, y shd d ans to Doc. attitude to work b privatisation? If a Doc would divert patients to his hosp, then y is d salary he's getting frm d govt? Is dt justified? Are u saying d essence of creating general hosp is nt worth it U may say #100 no b money, bt wen multiplied in folds(bt wait o...ao u tey know say na #100 sef?). If Doc wana patronise their frens based on trust(as u claim), they could av adviced them to com open branch @ nearby abi if their so-called fren fold up now they(Doc) won't patronise other diagnostics centre since they do not trust them lipsrsealed.

......anyway, I just read through ur profile and saw dt u'r a dokita(MO).....NO WONDER! Av gone tru some of ur posts and saw dt u'r eager to leave Naija, u better go listen to d song titled I LOVE NAIJA by korede Bello mayb dt wl change ur mind....eje ka sowo po gbe naija laruge ooo

I'm flattered you viewed my profile. But like I said, the doctors in a general hospital are not usually specialists, they're just "MO's", like Yours Truly. A gynaecologist is, first and foremost, a surgeon, and indeed laparotomies(the surgery that they'd most likely have performed on ur dearly departed mum) are being performed by them all the time. Also, for a little extra fee, he could always invite a specialist surgeon (specialists have some sort of clique/network thing going on, you see)
And I'm afraid i still stand by my advocacy for privatisation/commercialisation of the health sector, because money is the only thing that truly gets things done. If an entrepreneur finds out that one of his doctors is working elsewhere when he should be attending to HIS own patients, or doing anything that would jeopardise his ability to maximise profit, that doctor's gonna get axed. Government workers(most of them, anyway) always end up developing the same attitude towards work, irrespective of their profession.
And yes, I may end up leaving the country, especially if my babe dumps me, but...(in Arnold Schwarzenegger voice) "I'LL BE BACK!" cool
