Anything is possible,

where there is a will there is a way.

I once read of a man's story in the Nigerian Guardian(sometime early this year) on how he walked to Germany from Ondo state, that was in the 70s. 30years later, he came back by plane,

grin grin

Yayyyyyyy, I am up for it. As long as I am not the only female. Can't stand too much testerone. And guys not wanting to ask for direction, that would make it worse sef.

But an experience of a life time, sure, I am game. But problem numbero uno, I am in the States. Oh well, let me know what you guys have planned.

Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by layifioren(m): 10:49pm On Sep 17, 2006
some rich guy did from Nigeria did it before. He actually did it twice between 1996-2000 i believe. The guy is one of the top guys in COSTAIN Company I think. He used a new Isuzu Trooper the second time because I remember him showing it on NTA with some pictures he took. If you have enough people there's not much to it i'll think. It's all about adventure and fun so ride on!

Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by komekn(m): 12:37pm On Sep 18, 2006
Hi Folks,

Replying to a few concernns, Gleyo-- i drove from Koblenz, Germany to Manchester in 9 hours including 2 hour ferry ride and got stuck in traffic on the M25 and it was not a Ferrari.

Getting Visa,s EU pasports get you through Europe and into Morocco and from Mali onwards its Ecowas so Niaja kpale can suffice. (nigerian passport is tenable)

Moroocon roads are mainly tarmac, a few questions about Mauritania some tarmac some sand, i understand a half descent network of roads all through West Africa all dependant on route. And yes we could take the coastal route or close to the River Niger by the railway line, we are still deliberating on routes.

As for fear we fear God first and then use wisdom and caution, and we are not softies either having come from Waafe.

This journey is not about cost of air fare alone but adventure to boldly go where many others have already gone but just in the comfort of an SUV as Niaja people.

If you have not got a ride bring something to the table, skills, suggestions, money, publicity, etc, etc.

If you are in the states or elsewhere we can all meet up in London and move from there. We are waiting for more suggestions.

Kome

Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by doe: 3:51pm On Sep 18, 2006
Ok folks, who is the organiser? We may need someone with an HGV licence. Cos its not going to be a 4x4, but a truck. I have seen it done before. And it is still being done today.

Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by LoverBwoy(m): 12:43am On Sep 19, 2006
Interesting, this shouldnt be an alternative to air transport but an adventure/tourism thing. Just imagine u get to nigeria then u get robbed on the highway oops. I also agree those airlines are ripping us off big time! Knowing nigeria like overloading they reduce the luggage allowance to 20kg!
Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by vickybabe(f): 12:54am On Sep 19, 2006

Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by poske(m): 1:46am On Sep 19, 2006
Guys I am up for it  wink

Suggestions   Lets Make It Big

a) Can i be incharge of sponsorship/Navigation

b) Lets do it 1/11/07 targeting arriving on the 15/12/07

c) Lets make it not more than 100 cars (suvs of course and above) trucks accepted,
American folks you got enough time to ship your vehicles in to U.K

d)We can make it into relay (stage 1 and stage 2) when we arrive 15/12/07 we hand over the touch and the Nigerian contestants can join or take over for stage 2 which will be from 15/01/08 to 1/03/08 for Abuja to Johanesburg (South Africa)

e) Or we can do first to reach Abuja from London - Abuja(please don't try Lagos the crowd will be uncontrollable) and Johanesburg - Abuja something like that.

d) I can arrange helicopter x 3 + navigation software

Dangers

There are three major dangers

Snipers - there may be people who may try to take a lucky shot at drivers my suggestion is come with bullet prof car if you have. Although we will arrange for armed escort both on air and land.

Sickness - We try to reduce this by having a full medical exam certification before allowed to join

Accident/wrong route/trapping - We can avoid this by not racing just a very fast convoy, anyone trapped more than 1 day will be left to roast in the desert "joking"
also each car wil contain at least 3 able bodied folks to push the vehicle when need be.

FACTS

the distance from London to abuja is approx 6000miles
the distance from lagos to abuja is approx 300miles
so with this data we can say that our trip is equivalent to a danfo driver going to abuja 20times, is this not what they do in 2 weeks.

Okay what do you think cool

Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by zebudaya(m): 3:00am On Sep 19, 2006
It can be done, it's been done before, and it's being done now from bostwana to austria (by white people) http://www.zambezi.demon.nl/route.htm

i don't think any snipers would try to take anyone out, but robbers and scoundrels might try to steal but guns would scare them off. I would definitely want to do it someday.

poske if you're down with sponsoring, I'm in wink I'll get the mechanic to check the car up and ship it to England ASAP but it has to be christmas time or summer time.

grin grin grin grin
it aint a bad idea - but u shouldn't do it as a boycott to the air tariffs, rather with a view to having a completely different xperience + registering your name in history's book!

i read of a naija man wu did sumtin similar - with a custom built G-class 'box-benz' jeep - sometin of that nature could do 4 you too!

also, make sure u're not coming 2 naija for a 2 weeks break o - because it aint going to be worth the while!

you shld keep N200 naira notes of up to 100 pieces because of checkpoints when u get into naija  grin grin grin

when there are to many people on the trip - you tend to be discouraged along the line as some people wont b able to go further at sum point like that - 4 people will be ok!

all the best o - n be ready to ssign autographs on your return to the UK!
Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by manakins: 10:33am On Sep 19, 2006
Kome nice idea.
I can only help out by giving u the name of the naija guy that has done i think nija to spain.
His name is NEWTON JIBUNOH,he's very much around and i suppose he would be ready to give his full assistance.
Problem here is to get to him but i suggest GuardianNewspaper can give his contact or is there any Nairalander that can be of help.
Well i keep you posted if i reach him b/4 u.

Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by faajilawa(m): 11:30am On Sep 19, 2006
Yeah go for it .Im 100% behind you even though im not joining.booked my business class ticket to naija for xmas eh eh sorry. But on a serious note i dont see why not.I once drove a car from Madrid to Santander in Spain. This is like driving from Lagos to Kano.Loved every minute of it.I have also driven from Bordeaux in France to Bruges and Antwerp both in Belgium.I`ve done London to Cardiff in Wales a couple of times.
It doesnt seem so hard or outlandish as it seems.Just make sure you visit the websites of the countries you would be passing through to get a total picture so you would be well prepared.
Good luck
Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by tinard(m): 3:31pm On Sep 19, 2006
Well if you are up for the adventure but aren't too kenn just because you are in Nigeria, why can't you do it the other way round i.e. Lagos to London.

Abi una get mouth but can't chop. Try it and let's see what you can do and stop saying it's because i no de 4 london. Personally i've been planning for a while now but still haven't found ppl who can do it. You also need to carry extra fuel and food with you. Also change a few pounds or nairas to each country you'll be passing through's currency. You don't want any surprises. A doctor will be a bad idea just be a first aider.

Is it for this year or next year? I see, Poske planning for 07.

Ok, here is some of the problems I will be having. I don't think my boss will give me three months off from work, when I just started working two months ago. That's if we go this year.

07 tho, I can work something out.

I don't have a SUV, so I most definitely will ride with someone that has one.

I am an Engineer, but no mind me, na only Book Engineer I be. On a serious note, I have sense of direction and I like challenges.

So, let's go for it!
Re: Join The Ride From London To Lagos By Road by OldGlory1(m): 11:17pm On Sep 19, 2006
Economy Class to the UK will be more expensive than this trip. Plus you cannot put a monetary value on the thrill factor and just like the Mastercard commercial goes:

Boots for the Outdoors:$35
Soap,Cologne and Toiletries:$45
Road Trip from London to Lagos: Priceless grin grin grin grin
