The number of condoms used in Nigeria yesterday, the Valentine
Day, was conservatively put at 2.5m, while global consumption of the
product was put at approximately 1.2 billion. A Society for Family
Health (SFH) source said, looking at the number of condoms distributed
each year, and how much were consumed on monthly, weekly and daily
basis, “nothing less than 3m condoms would be consumed today as 2.5m
condoms had been consumed before 4 p.m. yesterday in Nigeria alone,”
he said.

Using last December’s sales, when 22 million condoms were sold
during the festive period, he said “narrowing it down to today
(Saturday) alone, and working on our 733,333 pieces of condoms, 1.2m
pieces of Gold Circle brand had been consumed, probably because it is
subsidised, adding that other brands of condoms could make it up to
2.5m.“Because the Valentine falls on a Saturday, by inference, the
global consumption of all brands of condoms, if we multiply by the
numbers of countries in the world, will be about 1.2 billion”, he said.

Meanwhile, it was also a giddy Valentine for newly weds as good
number of marriages held in Ibadan metropolis. A couple who spoke with
Sunday Tribune, but sought anonymity, when asked how they felt to be
married on the day, retorted that it was a dream come true as the wait
took seven years. Owners of fast food outlets, hotels and other
related ventures, had cause to smile as they recorded tremendous sales
from Friday.

When Sunday Tribune visited Tantalizer in Ring Road and Bodija,
Same goes for Chicken Republic, Ring Road, Big Treat, Bodija,
Tantaliser, and Mr. Biggs outlets throughout the state capital. The
crowd at Big Treat was overwhelming, as the main street leading to the
Bodija market witnessed a heavy traffic. Gifts’ shop had to contend
with customers looking for exquisite gifts for their friends and loved
ones.

At Cotton’s Club, Bodija, the merriment began a day before with
a Bachelor’s eve at the fun spot, which lasted till the wee hours of
the morning. At Options 24/7 and Koko Dome, Dugbe, the club night
recorded a large turn out of people. Hotels in Ibadan also recorded a
high inflow of guests from within and outside the state. Hotels like
Marble Suites, De Executive Suites, both in Bodija, Hotel Influential,
and Premier Hotel, were all fully booked as at the time of filing this
report.

The Zoo, at the University of Ibadan, also recorded a high turn
out of people who began to troop in as early as 9am. Same was the
scenario at the Amuse-ment Park, Agbowo, where families and lovers
were seen trooping into at the early hour of the day. Beyond these
hospitality spots, it was business as usual as market women where seen
at the markets, evening rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of the
fun seekers as they quickly found refuge from the rains, and soon
enough they were back to the business of the day. m,m m m .
