Rioting rocks eastern Nigerian city

At least three people have been killed in the eastern Nigerian city of Bauchi, close to the scene of clashes between religious gangs last year.

Several churches and mosques were set on fire in the violence on Saturday and at least 28 people were injured, but it was not immediately clear what triggered the unrest.

"A number of churches and mosques have been burned and at least three people killed," the Reuters news agency quoted a Nigerian Red Cross official as saying.

But local residents said normalcy was returning to the city.

"The military has been drafted in now and everything is coming back to normal," Abdullahi Kwarbai, a resident, said.

Isa Yuguda, the Bauchi state governor, said: "The security agencies have been directed to deal decisively with the perpetrators of this mayhem."

Past violence

Hundreds of people died in Jos, the capital of neighbouring Plateau state, last year, in violence between Muslim and Christian gangs sparked by a disputed election.

Jos lies at the crossroads of Nigeria's Muslim north and Christian south.

The fighting was considered the worst unrest in Africa's most populous nation for several years.

Security forces in Plateau state were on high alert as a result of the deaths in Bauchi.

"We have placed security here in Jos on red alert. We want to forestall any eventuality here," Dan Manjan, a spokesman for the governor of Plateau state, said by telephone.

Nigeria is roughly equally split between Christians and Muslims, although traditional animist beliefs underpin many people's faith.

More than 200 distinct ethnic groups generally live peacefully side by side in the West African country, although civil war left one million people dead between 1967 and 1970 and there have been bouts of religious unrest since then.

Seven dead in Nigeria team crash
Map

Seven people died and several others were injured after a head-on crash involving the team bus of Nigerian Premier League side Zamfara United.

Team official Ado Umar died at the scene of Friday's accident and a player, Abdullahi Sabiu, died in hospital early on Saturday.

The crash also claimed the lives of five passengers in the other car.

Several players and officials are being treated at the Federal Medical Centre in the northern city of Gombe.

Nigerian Premier League (NPL) official Tunji Babalola said the team were on their way to a league game against Wikki Tourist in Gombe.

The tragic accident comes just one month after lower league club Jimeta United lost 17 players and officials when their bus crashed in the north central town of Jos on their way to a league match in Abuja.

Why are nigerians fighting over imaginary gods?

Because most Nigerians are illiterate, unemployed or underemployed, and are generally frustrated with the way things are going.

This is also African tradition, Tribal Warfare. Until we start throwing instigators or these riots in prison for treason as they should be, Nigerians will riot. Perhaps we may want to deal with the underlying causes of the country's problems.

St. Funmi, be advised that mopping-up operations are still under way in Abuja, as members of the Armed Forces track down and capture renegade bands of prostitutes who are desperately trying to flee the battle front, and this means Abuja airport cannot be declared safe for any incoming flights at this time.

You will therefore have to be air-dropped into the Bauchi theater of war, along with paratroop reinforcements scheduled to arrive there in the next 24 hours.

St.Funmi:

@St.Funmi
Why are you bothered about their names? hundreds of thousands have been slaughtered in the Arab Emirate of the Northern Nigeria for the past 50 years and not a single person has ever been arrested. Thanks to the supervision of the Sultans. Infact, no killing has ever been carried out in the Sultanate of Sokoto because killing orders emanate from that place. Just like a sicilian mafia would not tolerate drug pushing in sicily but will rather encourage it outside sicily.

Why are you guys calling this another round of crisis, this is nothing but another round of blood-letting by the believers of the cult of Allah. This is normal as long as you believe you belong to one indivisible(hausa cliche), amalgamated nigeria. where is the oness when an unknown white man draws a cartoon is Denmark and thousand of non-muslims were slaughtered to the Arab deity of Allah in northern Nigeria.

The sultan of sokoto, all the emirs and the imams throughout the country including the millitary imams will not show their faces in condemning this regular islamic blood letting simply because it promotes the advancement of the cult of islam.

By the way, why can't a reciprocal blood-letting be carried out on muslim from the arab emirate residing in non-islamic area of Nigeria? Is it because of the spiritually doctored food they send to us from the Arab emirates of Nigeria?

This round of islamic blood-letting is so organised that a whole Al-Jazeera positioned bauchi state in eastern Nigeria. what a cheek!!!

Solutions is:

Make it tough for residence in your area, start a policy of rejecting their food items and fight back by not giving alm to their diseased, t.b. infested beggars, stop buying their suya meat, cattle, sugar, sweets, clothes, caps, tesubiu, koboko, brocade, farm produce etc. Instead invest on the local materials like traditional cattle from Badagry, Ilaje and Ijaw areas and Benin republic.

How many people are aware that cattles from islamic area of the north as always fed with arabic talisman and islamic juju so that consumer of such meat would not only have their spiritual fortification neutralised and they will look on timidly while their brothers and sisters are slaughtered regularly while they rationalise this kind of killing as mere riot and crisis, when the right word is organised killing.

Holy Chit ! Talismans eh ? Now I know why that hump-backed Zebu cow tasted so funny. Next time I had better make damned sure the beast is certified dead before I attempt to eat its flesh.
