So its no more news when there is little skirmish in muslim populated communities some irate youths go out burning churches and attacking places of worship of other religions.

But what does Islam says about this? does their actions represent the teachings of Islam?

No compulsion in religion

"Let there be no compulsion in religion : The truth stands clear from error ..." (Baqara 2:256)

Here we see unequivocally the quran denounces compulsion as it is incompatible with religion. Religion depends upon faith and will, and these would be meaningless if induced by force. In other words if there is no compulsion in religion there exist freedom of worship as establish by the quran itself.

Allah wills it

"If it had been your Lords will, they would all have believed, all who are on earth. Will you then compel mankind against their will, to believe?" (Yunus, 10:99)

Thus free will is Allah's gift to mankind, faith is therefore a moral achievement and to resist faith becomes a sin. (but like all sins Allah is the ultimate judge and not man)

Fight to defend churches

"Permission is given to those against whom war is made (to fight) because they are wronged...
...Had Allah not fended off one set of people by means of others, there would surely have been destruction of monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated
..." (Hajj, 22:39-40)

This is the final point and the most interesting, a little background to the above. According to Islamic historians this is the first verse that granted the muslims right to fight (in self defence) against those whom expelled them from their city (mecca) and stole the wealth they left behind. In previous occasions the muslims had hinted on their willingness to defend themselves while being persecuted in mecca for 15 years, but permission was not granted, rather they were told by Allah to "...hold back their hands (from fight) but establish regular prayers..." (Nisa, 4:77). The muslims were being taught self restrain and purging them from the wrong motives of fighting - pugnacity, the love of plunder, hatred against their enemies, gaining of personal ends. Fighting from such motives is wrong at all times.

As significant as the verse was (being the first permission) the major prayer sites of other religions (monasteries, churches, synagogues) are mentioned side by side with the mosque, and Allah (Most Exalted) acknowledges the commemoration of His Name in such sites. It is therefore unbecoming of a muslim to destroy sites were Allah's name is celebrated, - nay, it falls upon all to defend such sites.
