The Regent of Akungba Akoko, in Akoko Southwest Local Government Area
(LGA) of Ondo State, Princess Oluwatoyin Omosowon, has cried out to
Kingmakers in the town to expedite action by installing a substantive Monarch
for the community.
Princess Omosowon, who addressed newsmen in Akure, the Ondo State capital,
on Tuesday said she was already "tired" of her continuous requirement to
occupy the throne.
Armed with a tiring face, the Regent pleaded with Kingmakers and Traditional
Rulers in the sleepy town of Akungba to urgently intervene in the State
government and fast-track all actions for the selection of a new Monarch.
Princess Omosowon who lamented over what she termed "personal challenges"
confronting her on the throne, disclosed that her family who mainly resides in
Lagos State had once implored her to run away and leave the throne.
"Several times and occasions I have told those close to me in the community
mostly the leaders that I am tired of the throne.”
"I told them I want to leave for Lagos State to see my family and continue with
my business, but they would say it's tradition and I should remember it is my
father's throne,” she disclosed.
SaharaReporters gathered that the traditional stool of the town "Alale of
Akungba Akoko" became vacant 10 years ago and has since led to several
communal clashes and crises in the town.
One of these crises involved the kidnapping of the Regent according to
information from a source close to the stool.
The Akungba Akoko Regent was safely rescued from captivity through the
combined efforts of security agencies in the State. However she said that she
was prepared to leave the throne for Lagos after a reign of three years.
Earlier, the Monarch had debunked insinuations roving the community that her
continuous presence on the throne was delaying the installation of a substantial
King for the ancient town.
"I can't stop the Akungba community from having a new King. People have
confronted me on several occasion of being a barrier to this throne.”
"They told me I was the person stopping the installation of a substantive King.
For me, I told them, I understood the implication of the current situation we
have found ourselves,” she said to a correspondent of Saharareporters in a local
language.
Appreciating her supporters, Princess Omosowon said she had been enjoying
the full cooperation of both indigenes and non-indigenes in the community.
She claimed that her reign brought unprecedented development to the ancient
Akungba town and begged the people to give peace a chance so that a new
Monarch could successfully emerge.
Meanwhile, a source told SaharaReporters that the Regent was under "intense
pressure" to vacate the throne or face more grave challenges to her personal
life.
The source disclosed that such pressure could have made the Monarch address
some journalists today.
"The Regent has been under pressure to leave the throne or risk her life. Even, it
was as a result of that stay on site that instigated her kidnap.”
"She is being threatened by some bad leaders eyeing the stool. Although, during
our personal interrogation with her, she told us that her kidnappers wanted to
kill her because they have already paid for her soul. We just thank God she was
released" the source revealed.
